Do you have to be neurotic to be a star
« on: July 19, 2020, 05:03:20 AM »
Mullen strict dad etc, Daewon strict mom etc, Hawk, Andy Irons, Kelly Slater

It just seems everyone at the top of their game is kinda neurotic from mostly strict upbringings. The examples above are just because there is like a doco about them, all the others near/at the top are probably just as stressed by their families. The #1 scientist Isaac Newtons mom was an absolute horror for fucking him up emotionally.

Maybe all the parents getting their kids into skating or sports need to go a bit mental?
Like a drill sergeant or psycho bitch.
Chinese seem to excel due to stress.
Brotherly competition has produced many top professional surfer brothers.
Hobgoods, Irons, Lopez, The three Malloy Brothers, Chris, Keith and Dan, Gudauskas, Florence
the list is endless for surfers.

Is being a strict taskmaster underrated?
What can discipline do for you?

Also Doug "Pineapple" Saladino
His parents, Bruce “Guava” Saladino & Geraldine “Papaya“ Saladino were absolute tyrants with the strict training regime.

AO’s dad is well known for being a strict, straight-laced disciplinarian.
When nothing in society deserves respect, we should fashion for ourselves in solitude new silent loyalties.

I believe dead prez said that discipline makes life easier.
And to be sure, most people who are singularly great at something gotta be be neurotic. You have to bail on most of life to be great at something, I think.
Yes, you have to be neurotic to be pro.
Whoa. Danger.

It looks like having kind supportive easygoing parents can turn you into Jaws if you're not careful. So maybe you're onto something.

Then again Trea will prob never be as good as Shane so maybe not.

Vomit inducing thread, sorry mate. You're 150% a parent of someone who skates or someone who plays skateboarding on a TV instead of under your feet, again sorry mate. I know this because of the pro skateboarders and surfers you mentioned.

Single mindedness, that sounds like assburgers, oh wait

Its kind of a western thing too
Non western community members are more laid back and may not achieve fame and fortune,
but as a whole kinda healthier in their natural state compared to with western dogmas.

I think anyone fully into something who may not have the ability or the right stars to be great, can be neurotic.
Being a pro is like with ability and maybe with extra stress than most others.
Sometimes the stress comes from within, with no apparent rhyme or reason
Like a past life or something, or the right stars

Actually it was soccer as a kid and my [apparently strict] dad was the coach.
4 of my best friends went on to play for the country while I dropped out at 15 and started surfing.

I can tell by the way you post you were raised by your mom and her 3 sisters and 4 cats and they would hug you close to their breasts cupping your cheek with their hands and when you cried at night they gave you kittens and therapy puppies to help you sleep

Huh? You ever seen a Korean mom? My wife has one and she’s becoming one. They’re absolutely batshit crazy about making their kids go hard on whatever stupid thing they think is important. It’s a cultural thing I don’t get at all because my parents never gave a fuck about anything I wanted to do.

Exactly. This dude has probably never even talked to someone from Asia, much less visited.

Believe me, being ‘laid back’ is much more of a ‘western’ thing than an ‘east asian’ one

Dude,, I lived in Indo for 3 years all over and 1 year Malaysia and Thailand

Korea and Japan aint fucking asian countries anymore and have not been for a good while
Both countries had plans put on them from the west, esp christian asian neurosis in South Korea
Mention catholics anywhere, and the first thing most people think of is the guilt trip.

When I hung with Balinese in villages in was so mentally relaxing
Old ladies go topless everywhere and everyone wants to hold your forearm
esp if you looked stressed

One day I came in from the surf at Uluwatu and about a dozen surfers
and the old women who work in the warungs were all joined physically
by the women who sprawled themselves across the resting surfers
touching 2 or more surfers at once.

It reminded me of a group tug at slap parties
Do you want a hug Cucky?

No doubt south east Asia (especially island) culture is relaxed.

That’s why I specifically used ‘east Asia’ (usually meant to denote China, Korea, Japan). Those countries are notorious for strictness, and personally, as I’ve lived in Japan for 13 years, I deal with it daily.

Saying something as big and diverse as Asia is this or that is bound to be mistaken. I shouldn’t have played that game. But I was just pointing out how the ridiculousness is saying ‘Asia is like this’.

But for the countries I’ve listed where the majority of the population of Asia resides) although there are pockets of laid-back culture within them, the prevailing attitude is decidedly not.

And saying they are not Asian countries is stupid. Because  this strictness is somehow foreign-imposed and not intrinsic to ancient  military cultures? You apparently know fuck-all about the history. Japan has been a repressively strict military-based culture way before foreigners came. If anything, it’s mellowed out from the cultural exchange.

Make your kid work hard and understand the value of the dollar. Institute the idea of working with your hands, and that manual labor is valid experience to have.
