I would guess shot on a tripod, and then pick up the whole tripod for the light trails.

Actually that's it. Double shot in a long exposure and then pick up the camera while on the tripod at the end. That makes total sense now.

Wow...SIMCITY. Those are rad photos. Shooting at night is just so cool to me and more so cause I never do it. I think the best is at blue hour like one of your photos. And got a cover! Good stuff.

Thank you! The cover is just a self published passion project. Nice to put out your own work so you get full control.

2nd day using my new flash setup. Cool spot at an abandoned golf course:

There's also this guy I see at the park all the time doing these wild inverts. I reached out and asked if it was cool if I shot some photos and he was down. I had visions of shooting it on a specific isolated quarterpipe where I could use my flash for a better shot, but he felt most comfortable on this one and I wasn't going to set up flashes in a busy skatepark:

The flat bar shots turned out cool!
And yeah, kinda hectic to set up flashes at ponderosa.
At least you get a lot of sun in bend so it works for those photos. You can always do the hold a flash in your hand thing.

My first time trying my flash in daylight that wasn't a shadowed area. Wasn't really sure what I was doing. The fisheye shot I was just holding my flash above the camera and the long lens was on a tripod. The bump is very subtle, so it was a little challenging to shoot. The first photo you can't even tell there's a bump. But I'm stoked to keep meeting more people in town to skate with and keep learning how to use a flash. This guy in the photo rips and looking forward to shooting more with him soon.

Great job my guy! Both look hella good.

Honestly using a flash is not as hard as one might make it seem. I feel it's more intimidating than how hard it actually is. Obviously getting really complex is not that easy but the basics are really simple and once you lose the fear of failure you can start discovering the magic of shooting with a flash.

It's not super obvious that you're using flash so if you're happy with the exposure and light, I think that that's a big win

Thanks for the feedback Owen and gsosa! I was happy with the lighting on the fisheye shot, but where I had the flash on the long lens angle didn't seem like it was doing so much. It's just all trial and error at the moment for me with distance of the flash from the skater and then adjusting flash power. It's been fun, though, learning a new skill.

I shot a trick yesterday where the clouds and light were constantly changing and each shot was looking a bit different, but I'll post those later for some critique when I finish editing them.

Here's some shots from yesterday. Kind of an interesting spot to shoot at and, again, just sort of winging it with how to light it.

really enjoying those fisheye shots RCB3! the lighting and flash looks great.

i always find it a little challenging shooting fisheye + flash during the day but was able to get this of one the locals around my area. it wasnt shot in full sun, but my flash still was not powerful enough to overpower the sun and fully freeze the action.

A couple shots from the last week or two. Nothing I'm overly happy with, but I like the horizontal crooks shot. The fs board and 50-50 were some warm up shots and just standard fisheye stuff. I shot a trick I was really happy with last week, but he didn't end up landing it and doesn't want to post a bail. Bummer.

Shot this last weekend.

Thought I had sensor dust above his head, but when I zoomed in it was a bird way up in the sky. I had one flash behind the rock pointed up at him. And one at the top right of the image to fill in all the shadows from the sun. Used High speed sync so I could shoot a faster speed in the sunlight. 1/1250 and f10 on a nikon d780 with 16mm fisheye.

Looks sick! Is the rock bondoed so it's a smooth pop off or fully rock material? Cool spot.

It’s fully rock material and mostly flat. It’s set into the ground and easy to ride up it.

nice pic, my one critique is I think the flash should have come from a different angle considering it is coming in at the same angle as the sun which is kind of redundant. had the flash been in front of him, he would've been lit up more and would have a nice rim light from the sun.

Agreed on the flash placement. When there’s strong sunlight, especially that nice golden hour here, I treat the sun like my main flash and use my actual flashes to fill in and highlight.

It’s a very sick trick!

Shot some stuff at the park last night. Messed around with a slow shutter/flash combo for the first time on the 5-0. I definitely want to experiment with those types of shots more since I didn't really know what I was doing.

Those central Oregon sunsets make for a fantastic backdrop.

This is from a couple weekends ago in Astoria, OR. Looks like the whole DIY got smashed out a few days after we were there. This is a great skate feature. Cool little shop out there too called Cypress.

Back lip from the flat to fakie in the transition.

f/6.3, 1/1000 iso 320 on my 70-200mm. Had 2 flashes on the right side on HSS to fill in the shadows and make him pop from the background.

That thing looks super fun! And yea, we get some nice sunsets in Central Oregon. Looking forward to shooting more stuff at sunset time this summer. I'd love to get more practice in lower lighting.
