I don’t grip my board at the shop only because I feel bad wasting peoples time. But if I’m ordering a board online I’ll check that box. I ride plain grip 95% of the time so somebody gripping it no biggie.

gripping boards is a chore. Putting boards together and general board maintenance fucking sucks. I’d rather not do. In a perfe

I grip my own board, but the box cutter I use hasn't had the blade replaced in over 30 years, so it's a battle to cut with.

Rest easy knowing that I will continue to blight this community with my disgusting grip jobs.

Being genuine though, I do like the look of badly applied grip. I find it more interesting to look at than the perfect black top and it helps me remember the feeling of setting up a board for the first time.

Yep, something very therapeutic and satisfying about it. I have always the next deck hanging on the wall and I grip it ready at some point when I need a little relaxing break from everyday life.

I think I prefer Jessup grip, but I always get air bubbles when I grip it, therefor I use Mob. Either way if you're having the shop do it your missing out on a satisfying process.

I personally enjoy the act of setting a fresh board up and the grip is a big part of it. You can’t tell me that it isn’t fun cutting all the way around and having it be perfect

I don't use a razor.

I use a screw driver or file. Sometimes I use a truck if I'm outside.

I crush all pain into the object and i feel heeled afterwards.

Yep, a nice clean cut pretty darn satisfying.

Must be the same feeling Michelangelo had after he stepped back and looked at the completed statue of David for the first time.

I have to apply the grip. This is the process in which I assure the board that I am now it's owner.

Gripping a board is no problem when I can find a sharp razor blade. I never can find a sharp razorblade. Actually my past two boards have been gripped with a pocket knife. Oh and I just got a  9 inch board  and the shop didnt cut my grip long enough it was literally nose to tail but I fuckin did it perfect anyway. Also life tip dont try to grip boards in heavy wind.

Always grip my own, almost always just plain black Jessup (with silverado bolts) for the last ten years or so, but sometimes use offcuts to do something a bit different if I like the top colour of a deck (with plain black bolts).

Over the years, I had seen a few cool grip jobs I have copied from time to time, around 2005 I mainly just cut the grip into a few measured pieces to leave a half finger width gap a couple of times down the board when there was yellow or orange tops on DLX wood which worked well for a long time.

I used to use a file / screw driver to give that outline of the board, until someone showed me that it’s basically a waste of time .

As long as you have a sharp razor blade , you lay the grip flat , make sure there is no air bubbles and cut into the top from the nose or tail and then use the wood of the board to guide your razor blade around the board , flip over , do other side,  rub down edges with excess grip done.

Thankfully not too many people nowdays want the top graphic cut out, but that was once a big time waster when you had to cut grip out to fit around the top logo.

Remember NEVER cut grip already on your deck either, as it will almost always cut into the wood and through layers of ply.

People usually learn this once and never do it again.
