wondering if i could use the tax id from an unrelated business or if they want to see that you're an actual skate related business

Most likely depends on the Mfg company and their terms. They vary, but most just are looking for assurance that you are not exclusively an online business.

Others have said on the previous page that they are moving to a business to business sales platform now, so no direct sales to the general public from now on.

The site is still there and it now has the B2B login showing, so it will only be accessible if you register and have a business of some sort.

I guess this is the normal way that they will operate, given they provide boards under Generator to a significant number of shops and brands, directly from their warehouse, all supplied by BBS, so there are huge numbers at play.  Even Generator has a minimum of 50 boards per graphic, as well as all the other info on their own site, which is worth having a read.

I think the easiest way to get boards you want is find skate shops who use that specific shape you like and hopefully do not have a crazy / bad graphic on their own boards.  Maybe even some shops get the blanks in anyway, as some I have seen do have them, which will not be as expensive as buying a branded board.

I know it is not the same, but hopefully helping said skate shop by giving them some business, or even asking your local if they could order some in for you - bulk deals often work out cheaper for you and them.

i like to paint my own decks. i always feel weirdly bad sanding off an existing graphic like i'm saying F U to them plus it's just annoying. i wonder if you could get a local skate shop to basically place the order for you and then they just mark it up a bit to sell to you. could be a good deal for everyone

Walking into a skate shop and buying a brand new full price deck is awesome. It's also not always financially possible. Both of my kids skate and between the three of us, that would get pretty pricey. We'll definitely do it but I also buy a lot of BBS made shop decks or wait for sales or big markdowns on last seasons decks. The closest shop to me has ugly ass BBS shop decks for $45 and I'm on one now. Sale season is pretty much over but plenty of places still have markdown decks. 303 currently has some DLX boards for under $50. ATM Click has some BBS wood on sale for $30 and non-sale decks for $50 with free shipping over $60.

They responded, like a man, quickly to my email:

“ We got a bunch of push back from brands and retailers about people coming to our site and buying blanks and not supporting their local skateshop, so we felt we needed to do a bit more vetting on who was ordering. So to get the secret password to log in and order you need to be one of the following.

-brand
-brand in development
-educator- art school, PE, after school program
-non profit- church, skate program, etc
-print shop
-retailer online/ physical location
-distributor

If you fall into any of these categories let me know, and we can get you set up as a wholesale account.

There is a chance your local retailer can order you one up too.”

Is this why there are so many tiny, different board brands? They’re not trying to make money, but just to save money on good decks?

Any advice on becoming a brand in development, screen printing, decks, apparel?

lol

Ha yeah, that's cool to see they replied and as expected too.

Now as to how to start your own brand, or at the very least, I would say think of a brand name, make a logo, start an instagram or other social media account, then provide this information in the application for access and see how you go.

And yes the number of people who do start brands just to have their own boards and supply to their homies is always going to be the most common thing for a lot of skater owned board brands, over someone who doesn't skate but thinks skateboarding is going to make them money and more often than not does all the wrong things and ends up with a lot of dead stock no one wants at all.

* Anyone imagine doing some "Slap sticker" board graphics, where a bunch of you guys in USA get them done up and then get your individual board boxes sent to your own addresses from the Generator dist site?  Just a few simple Slap logos arranged like you would have put Slap stickers on your boards and you can then put other graphics on as you like too.  Probably more trouble than it is worth, but funny to think about it all the same.

Who was it that got their board graphics done with their sponsors logos on it too?

I’ve pretty much been doing custom boards for myself the past few years. My brand has been done.

A slap pals board would be sick, but someone with a shop would have to do. They probably get a better shipping rates and already ordering board boxes anyway so they could add more to their existing order at a lower cost.

Printed sponsor logos on boards. I know prod, joslin and malto did it.

Thanks for the reply.

I know sometimes I look back at what I have posted and thought that was a bit silly, but I know so many people on here love blanks (maybe more for the price) and Slap stickers, so it was a humourous conclusion any which way.

Your brand always stood out as a good one, when I saw those boards.

I can't even think how many people asked why I hadn't started my own brand over the years, but the main thing I think was that I had no desire to do so, along with so many other awesome brands out there, but any which way, I tend to find the right shape, the right wood, even nice stains more appealing or interesting than any one specific brand - goodness knows how many boards I have taken the graphic off over the years - but it helps that I know where I can get them, in the exact size, shape, concave and woodshop that I enjoy riding, more often than not BBS made DLX boards, in my case anyway.  Guessing that is the main reason people were so keen on skatesamples.com because it was good wood at a great price.

Living in AU, it is also somewhat limiting for quite so many woodshop options, or at least distribution of blanks is a little more minimal than in USA, from what I can see.

I can only imagine some other places where there are even less options for boards that people want to ride, especially if they are as fussy as I am with their deck choices.

my go-to for blanks over the years has always been socal skate shop. they used to use clutch and get tons of shapes, sizes, and colors in like weekly. then it died down to only being prime and ps stix, lately it seems like they only get ps stix and that's it. but they do get blanks in fairly regularly you just gotta check back and see.

My last SkateSamples batch was pretty f'd. One of the decks got extremely deep cracks that ran the length of the nose and tail that started from the bolt holes. The deck never got out of the 60-80F range the cracks randomly appeared and it sounded super dead.

Another one delammed on the tail after literally 1 sesh. I still skated it at the slappy spot for 2 sessions but you could eventually feel the kicks flexing and it creaked pretty bad.

This happened to me too. Tails flexed and creaked bad immediately and the tail sounded dead.
For someone w.no signature ur awfully hostile, & that is why I do this

Picture is missing the G825s & G85s shapes. Which were a little shorter than the regular 8.25 & 8.5, and had a 14” wheelbase I believe?

i think there's a different 9" wide shape too. my last order was supposed to be a g90 which is 9x33 15wb but i got a 9" that was 32.something and the wb was like 14.5. They did send a replacement but I wasn't even aware they had a different 9" popsicle

I'm new to the slap boards, but I seen skate samples website went back up. Is it possible to have my local order the blanks through them, then I buy a blank from my local? I'm trying to think about how I could buy from them because it says you have to be a brand, upcoming brand etc. to order.

Would they check the info first before sending the order to a "private citizen" compared to a business, shop, or someone from their list of people they are going to sell to now?

Could be worth a try anyway, cause all existing account holders / previous purchases might already have a foot in the door there, but I have no idea as I have never even purchased from them.  Note the special instructions in caps on the welcome page though.

Hi Visitor, thanks for you interest in our samples. We got a bunch of push back from retailers about people coming to our site and buying blanks and not supporting their local skateshop, so we felt we needed to do a bit more vetting on who was ordering. So to order you will need to be a..

-brand
-brand in development
-educator- art school, PE, after school program
-non profit such as church, skate program, etc
-print shop
-retailer online/ physical location
-distributor

If you fall into any of these categories let me know, and we can get you set up as a wholesale account.

Please put relevant category into ORDER SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS in the shopping cart.

Honestly I ordered from Skate Samples because my local shop doesn't keep consistent stock of the many brands that use basic Generator shapes. For months they'll have like 10 Birdhouse decks, a handful of Sk8mafia, a few old DLX shapes that are obscure, and that's it. I'm sure people who live in much smaller communities also have similar situations and in my case I'm at the mercy or whatever a few 20 something's think is cool that day and want to order vs what people want to buy. I've literally gone in and bought 3 of a shape I've asked them to order so it's clear that the demand is there. Oh wait they decided to add Edgelrd as an account vs buy more Sci-Fi, guess I'll just go pay Tactics $80+ including shipping for the same deck I can get 5 of for $100. The incentive isn't there for most consumers.

My local is basically a clothing store with surf and skate goods in the basement. It's actually a good store and an asset to the community but currently there is no manager of the surf and skate section so the owner is doing the ordering. She's rad but hasn't really been much involved in the skate scene in probably 20+ years. She's well stocked on 7.75" and 8" decks and the trucks to go with them but the last time I went to get a deck the biggest thing they had was a Krooked 8.5 and there was only one of them. I found an 8.38 BBS shop deck but there was only one of them too. I wanted to cop a pair on Indy 159 hollows a couple weeks ago and not only did they not have them. They had no Indy's, Thunders or Ventures bigger than 8.25"! Probably 30 pairs of trucks in the case and nothing I could skate! I mentioned to her the next time I saw her that she might want to get some new decks and she said "nobody is buying decks right now" so I told her that nobody is buying those decks right now and she totally understood and was wondering why so many companies had like 9" decks right now.

Late to this, but went to Skate Samples today and saw that message. It's lame that they were bullied into only selling to businesses.

I refuse to believe that blanks caused a major hit to shops and brands. Instead of pushing $80 decks, major companies should make some with minimal graphics for $50-$60. Like The Heated Wheel.
