Yeah wack. Nike just trying to help someone else get the blame for their toxic waste. How does this help the environment in any way? What happens to all that rubber scrap that gets left all over the ground after wearing off or when it gets thrown in the trash. Nike should just go back to their jock roots and stop trying to turn skateboarding into basketball.

Ian Deacon, owner of Flip, is the TM for Jessup?
The '80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Yeah, I saw that. Co-owner with Jeremy Fox in actuality. And it's stated on the Death Box (basically Flip when they were in the UK) Facebook page (rumours, probably not true) that Jeremy Fox is moving back to the UK.

The real play is Nike reusing their industrial byproducts to churn out even more shoes and tchotchkes - every last bit eventually destined for the landfill - more efficiently, allowing them to spend less on buying new resources and even selling their literal nike-branded garbage for other companies to use, and then marketing this cost saving measure as having any sort of tangible environmental benefit. It's not like skateboarding makes up a negligible amount of Nike and Jessup's revenues and they have no intent of implementing any of these technologies in their lineups outside of greenwashed demo products, right?

Going off of the Getty Images grip graphics I think the target market for this is yuppies who read press releases.

You guys are anti innovation!!!

Remember in the early 2000s when some vert skaters started skating decks made from all carbon instead of wood – and everyone laughed about it? Who's laughing now?!  ;D

It just seems like they mix the rubber waste to the base rubber layer of the griptape (the one with the adhesive). That means you don’t need as much virgin material to produce a sheet of griptape. How is that bad?! I also don’t think it will affect grip in any sense because that comes from the sand which is applied on top...

It beats the rubber being dumped in some landfill.

The best case scenario here is that the rubber is deferred from the landfill for a few months or years. Worst case is that it's scraped off during skateboarding and washed into waterways.

It’s not only delaying waste, dafuq.
The best case scenario (and only case scenario) is that the waste rubber is not going straight to a landfill now, it’s repurposed for something else, like griptape. So you don’t need to produce as much new virgin material to make new griptape = less waste.
It’s like patchwork clothing or something like that. If you can make new clothes with old clothes you don’t need to make new textile = less waste. Is it that hard to understand?

Nike has been doing the 'turning leftover shoes into a rubbery material' thing for a little while. In Portland there are a bunch of public basketball courts that are made from the stuff donated by Nike. And you can drop your old shoes off at Niketown stores. Not sure how it is in other places. Obviously Nike has a HUGE presence here in Portland

Good for Nike for trying to recycle old sneakers. Especially when it likely isn't a profitable process (not factoring in the good PR). Not that it will make a dent in all the waste are burying the planet in, but still.

Not sure if this grip will preform any different.
Either way, I don't blame Jessup for trying something. Other than graphic grip (which everyone is doing, including most board brands now), what other innovations are there to be had with grip?
Warm Up Zone. Let's watch some skateboarding videos.

Strange that they used only one skate shoe bottom for this graphic print. Come on, at least get a Dunk bottom mixed in there amongst the mostly running shoes...
