This should be in "Shoes & Gear".

That being said, pretty interesting stuff. The post about getting a bunch of DSM wood tested and it coming up as birch and soft maple was wild.

Wow, that is super shady. Creature, Santa Cruz, Blind price points are really just plywood, huh?

And the cheap Powell completes as well - although they are straight up about them being birch.  They specifically call them "Birch Completes"  https://www.skateone.com/complete-skateboards

We all knew that the blind are SC price points were sus though right???

That wasn’t an R7 deck, although I am super curious what the results would be.

I mean we did, but now we have a means of visualizing it.

For Dwindle wood we have:

Resin Birch Construction - $34.95 - $39.95, Walmart tier decks
Resin Hybrid Maple Construction - $49.95, above Walmart but below shop / PP decks (?), will have the letters HYB
Resin-7 Canadian Maple Construction - $59.96, the Dwindle equivalent of BBS / Clutch decks

A good way is to check the cardboard insert, if it's R7 it will be indicated on the insert and lasered onto the front truck mounting holes.

Edit:
https://bbsm.wpengine.com/2021/05/16/buyer-beware/

Looks like even some Creature / Santa Cruz decks are all birch despite stating Rock Hard Maple

That's really interesting info thanks for sharing that. Where would the "hyb" mark be, on a serial number?

I don't really skate dwindle decks too often so I'm not super familiar with how their usually marked but I have an Evisen deck in the stack, not an R7. Only identifying make is a small green DSM sticker on the shrink. Probably a hybrid? I kind of liked it though but that's probably just the shape.

HYB is how a lot of the websites list them:
https://garageskateshop.com/products/color-logo-hyb-deck?_pos=1&_sid=aa2f83fe1&_ss=r
https://thankyousupply.com/collections/decks/products/almost-spin-blur-logo-blue-8-0-skateboard-deck

Re the Evisen, I would assume it's DSM but not R7. Dwindle / DSM has been working with smaller local brands in Asia and Europe and they are listed as R7 on the cardboard insert. I've been Habitat and Alien Workshop decks with the little green DSM sticker and REGROWTH laser etching which is proprietary.

Someone pointed it out a while ago but even the pre-build Baker completes sold on Skate Warehouse have the sticker.

https://bbsm.wpengine.com/2021/05/16/buyer-beware/
Gave this a 2nd look and I'm not entirely sure what to make of it, considering the source is BBS. Santa Cruz / Creature proudly stating ROCK HARD MAPLE and having their decks be 7 plys of birch seems strange, and I know guys who swear by their durability.

thread title should be "NHS-DSM scam"

using other types of wood for price point boards / completes is one thing

Straight up lying to your customers is a way bigger one

I guess Evisen would not be down for lowgrade construction
Their boards don't "feel" wrong from my experience

but when you are lying to the skaters / end-customers... why not lying to brands making boards at your factory

https://www.nhsfunfactory.com/825in-x-3204in-slab-diy-creature-skateboard-deck
Their "PP" under $60 decks are listed as birch hardwood.

https://www.nhsfunfactory.com/825in-x-318in-screaming-hand-santa-cruz-skateboard-deck
The team decks at $60 are listed as North American Maple.

At I assumed it was for the pre-built completes but the 2 decks listed (Creature Catacomb 7.75 / Santa Cruz Gleam Dot 7.75) are sold as solo decks. Pre-built completes use birch (https://www.nhsfunfactory.com/800in-x-3125in-iridescent-dot-full-santa-cruz-skateboard-complete).

Again, I would take the info listed on the BBS page with a pinch of salt, that post is a direct comparison against their competition NHS / DSM.

Birch / Maple Hybrid / R7 matters to consumers who care about these things. I would gander the average skate consumer chooses a brand or graphic they like and just go with it. Plus it doesn't do the brands any favors by over-educating their customers; give them enough information to make the purchasing decision, not too much to paralyze their decision making.

i hear you
but i feel like in a better world everything should be public knowledge
As a shop owner, i want to precisely know what i am selling and i want to spread knowledge to my customers.

I was already avoiding NHS solo boards as much as possible because it felt shady and / or way too expensive for chinese wood. But i was fine with Santa Cruz completes because that's what the kids want unfortunately

but right now my distributor is lying to me when i buy santa cruz completes (specs mention Canadian maple)
while NHS website clearly states Birch

i don't care about doing brands any favor.

On the B2B and FunFactory sites NHS does 2 price points in their decks = Northern Birch Hardwood or North American Maple, ( and then VX and Everslick etc)

Completes are Birch.

If you're local distro is telling you different then that's on them, not NHS.

What about when the packaging says "Hard Rock Maple" but the wood in question is all birch?

Check out this one:

https://bbsmfg.com/2021/05/16/buyer-beware/

Not to be too keen on anyone putting someone else down (person or woodshop) but when those boards from Blind, Creature and Santa Cruz all clearly have those words "Hard Rock Maple" on the sticker, then show up as something else, it raises eyebrows.

Not a worry really as I will still skate what I want to skate (not Dwindle wood) anyway, but sometimes it is NOT the local disto that is telling a story...

Did you miss the part I posted earlier saying:

They used to call it Hard Rock Maple, as did 90% of the other price point decks from numerous brands/factories.

$35 Mini Logo price points are still called Rock Hard Maple. https://minilogoskateboards.com/mini-logo-leopard-fur-18-skateboard-deck-244-k20-8-5-x-32-08

$50 Powell's are too: https://www.skateone.com/powell-peralta-biss-ruby-tailed-wasp-skateboard-deck-shape-244-k20-8-5-x-32-08

Even &&'s $85 Flight deck is Hard Rock Maple and Fiberglass https://www.skateone.com/powell-peralta-pro-andy-anderson-heron-flightr-skateboard-deck-8-45-x-31-8

is there a legal definition or industry standard for the use of the term Hardrock maple when selling wood products?   I imagine it's not right? So they can just put Hardrock on the label as marketing since it's an umbrella term that includes multiple maples from various regions.

Ok

I had one NHS board (Santa Cruz screaming hand) in 22 years of skating and it may have the worst board I've ever had (although my PS Stix GX1000 is giving it a run for its money). It just felt CHEAP.

That shit chipped the first day, has pressure and stress cracks the whole length of the board, was soft, and skated like ass. I left it at a skatepark after barely a week, took two days for it to disappear, even the locals didn't want it.

Santa Cruz boards have always sucked and now we know why.. birch is for cabinets not skateboards. Take away Indy and all you have is a toy company.

Yes, so they did have "Hard Rock Maple" on packaging that was Birch wood, but have recently changed it, yet those boards shown are not price points though are they?

Not trying to argue, just asking?

The three blind pricepoints I’ve had (this was all in 2015) all cracked in less than a week of skating. All I skate is low impact too. It all makes sense now.

A few years ago I found a blind logo PP on clearance after riding a r7 Samaria deck that I loved. It delamed after 2 weeks. Learned my lesson.

Same, wondered how bad could a $30 Darkstar deck be, aside for the graphics. Gave that shit up after 1 session.

oh man i remember those decks, these kinda graphics

they popped up here around 2013/2014, lot of people had em cus they were £30 and seemed a good option until everyone realized they were dogshit. don't think i've ever seen as many decks snap as i have in that time period. i could be wrong but im sure near the end of cliches lifespan they were on the pricepoint wood too - they did 2 collabs with my local shop and the first deck was decent (2012/2013 maybe) and the second (2015 or 2016) were awful and snapping left right and center.

come to think of it i dont think i've ever had a good experience with a dsm board.
