Shields off and reds roll the longest all rusty. I got 3 winters out of my last set.
Also I suggest the ultra corse grip tape that the old vert guys use.
Album link. I saw another pals account   Photos too big. Apologies. I know some of yall hate me for it

Tl;dr, I live in Alaska and probably did too much acid

The super coarse grip rules, I had this longboard grip called vicious at first, then I tried this stuff from Powell called hardcore and it's way chunkier

Some thoughts for my rain board/cruiser lately

What if I get a super high-bond adhesive, super thin UHMWPE sheet, like the same stuff cutting boards and snowboard bases are made out of, and put that on the bottom of a Powell flight deck, like a slick? Then I could put freestyle skid plates and deck rails on over that, fucker should be pretty indestructible and actually be able to noseslide and boardslide crusty ass spots and shit, and just change out the tail skid if it gets super worn down

Not sure how an 82a longboard wheel is going to want to slide as far as ledges are concerned tho. Still curious about the 64mm 88a and 93a dragons but the 93s are probably too hard and the 88's should probably have a core to be as fast as something like the snakes 82's or 75's even, esp on dirt trails and shit

Thinking about Race Reds packed with Phil wood grease for bearings, might even try and swap the balls with my ceramic reds... Cause the race Reds can be tightened down and water isn't really getting into the inside of the wheel as easy

Here's what I'm thinking so far

Powell flight 9" popsicle
Powell Hardcore grip
Freestyle tail skids
Button head longboard bolts
1/4" risers
Hollow Indy 159s
Race Reds packed w/grease
82a 66mm powell snakes

That must be Madrid Flypaper.

I put a pressure cracked FA board on some old Indys with some 54~ mm, 80-85~ duro OJs and Bones Reds to push to the grocery store and cruise around when it's wet outside. It's a pretty haggard set-up but still provides a smooth ride. It's a fun way to repurpose some old shit, better than just letting it rot in storage.

I found the Powell hardcore grip to be more coarse and pizza-like than the Madrid thumbcutter grip, Jessup roam, and vicious. It's the chunkiest I've found

Just a cruiser board old aws deck indys bones swiss & kyrptonic wheels off of some vintage chicago roller skates i thrifted, just put them back on had some wheels i got off my lady’s little sisters penny board that had lights in em haha people really liked em n they made me feel safer at night
Heavy as shit though think i prefer the krypts alot lighter not as cute though
Seriously if you have trouble talking to women or breaking the ice try out some of the light up penny board wheels, never had gotten so much attention skating before, really puts smiles on peoples faces for some reason

Was thinking about my rain/dirt cruiser concept earlier

The only thing I've bought for it so far is Vicious 24 grit grip tape...

I was eyeing the 9.25" x 14" wb shaped VX creature board

Today I thought why not buy four sets of lil jawns or rib bones, cut 1/2" inch off one end on all of them, and butt them together in the middle of the board about 5 inches apart, and run them the whole length of the board except the last two or three inches at the kicks, where my replaceable homemade polyethylene skid plates will live

At some point I got into looking at acrylic double sided tape and UHMWPE sheets, films, tapes to protect the edges of the board

I was gonna use a heat gun to make them softer and conform to the edge of the deck and stuff.

Somehow I got into looking at a board that was less angled at dirt and craziness, and closer to what I would usually skate so I stay consistent

Powell has a 14" wb 8.3" wide flight deck. I remembered flight decks are like 3mm thinner. So even with a 1/8" riser I'm still just as high off the ground as usual

So I could technically glue and screw a 1/8" sheet of uhmw polyethylene to the bottom of the board, except for the last 2 or 3 inches on the kicks, and cut wheel wells out...

I'm gonna make an indestructible board hahah. When I wasn't trying to put this much effort in, the VX sounded good. But then I imagined it all chipped up and shit. So if I put rails on the edge that could save it, but hard to do since it's a shaped deck.

Since I'm thinking about going HAM on the longest-lasting board again and putting extra effort in, that flight deck is way more appealing since they're better quality anyways.

I wonder how the pop and shit would feel so I'm thinking about maybe not doing the whole sheet, and just a protective rim around the edge of the board

Might still do the creature VX as well with the bigger wheels next, so I already have some experience with the materials and shit and it'll be easier working with a shaped board

Idk

Another consideration for a rain setup, do you size up, down or go weird? I just recently set up an 8 with some Ace 8.38 trucks and tiny (~45mm) wheels just to ride something that’s a little weird. I have a few 7.75s lying around too that I might experiment with on these 8.38 trucks down the road

I was thinking about sizing up but honestly the exact specs I want are hard to find. So if my rain board was the same specs as my normal setup, I won't be so intent on making it indestructible. So, current rain board concept is this:

•8.3" x 14" wb doelling flight deck, these stay crispy and I can't find a stronger board

•Vicious longboard grip, it's like 24 grit and I've skated it in the rain with mud on my shoes and shit and it still worked

•Seismic tail skids to prevent razor tail and lower pop angle from risers+big wheels

•1/8" risers (on the flight deck, which is already ~3mm thinner, I should still be about the same height off the ground as I would be on my regular setup)

•Truss head/button head bolts so they don't sink into the deck over time

•Indy 144 standards with flanged axle nuts to cover more of the bearing, grease on the axles, no axle washers

•Seismic ceramic 6-ball built-in bearings with grease, tightened down

•Powell G-Slides 56mm

My previous setup:

•Flight 8.25 x 14.25 wb
•Vicious grip
•no tail skids, so after a year of riding it the razor tail was pretty bad
•regular hardware, no risers
•ace AF1 hollow 55s
•bones ceramic reds, shields on, extra speed cream
•spitfire conical full 80HD (they do NOT slide hahah)

So I'm excited to try the new bolts and tail skids, that'll make the board last waaay longer

And excited to try the 56mm G-Slides. I got some for my girlfriend and they feel niiice.

And those built-in bearings with the grease and flanged axle nut should be basically no maintenance like a sealed bearing on a bicycle hub

Originally I was trying to build some crazy monster truck but really I just want to be able to cruise and do tricks even when it's shitty out and there's still gravel all over the road in the spring

Staged my girlfriend's Indy 144s and 56mm Powell G-Slides on a broken board to see how it would look. This is the tail end of a blue eagle so it's like 8.3" wide. 1/8" risers. The wheels are so wide as to be pretty much exactly flush with the end of the axles

I think with the flight deck, tail skids and super coarse grip, this will be the new rain board for sure

Butttt I wonder if I can re-shape and re-drill the 9" flight popsicle, and run it with 159s and 59mm G-Slides... Those wheels stick out 1/8" more than the 56mm ones on each side so they should be flush with 159s on a 9"... Lotta work for just a bit more wheel though.

Plus, I feel like if my cruiser is as close as possible to my regular board I can stay pretty consistent while still having a cruiser to fuck around on and not worry about muddy grip or whatever... So the 8.3 twin still seems like a solid option

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Did some more thinking on it and have fully decided what to get for the rain board

As far as grip, I've tried vicious, Powell hardcore, and Jessup roam. The Jessup wasn't chunky enough, the Powell was super chunky but not as durable and I ended up with some smooth spots, so I bought vicious again. I think it's the best option for rain/dirt board grip without going full Alaska and putting GripAll snowskate tread on it

I've tried VX and Flight decks and vastly prefer the Flights. Going to put seismic tail skids on this time though. Razor tail was an issue before. I have some for my girlfriend's board in hand and I think they're going to work out great. That 8.3" twin is the winner.

Definitely going with truss head hardware this time. Won't sink into the board over time when re-tightening hardware

Gonna do Indy standard 144s, 1/8" risers, and 56mm g-slides. The flight decks are ~3mm thinner, so the 1/8" riser wouldn't make me any higher off the ground than my regular board. The 56mm wheels + risers will make my pop angle steeper but the skid plates will bring it back down.

Finally, still going with those seismic 6-ball ceramics, greased and tightened down with flanged axle nuts(grind king rims style hahah)

So the process of trying to build an indestructible monster truck in the specs I want was too ridiculous, and I'm just going to build a shit weather board that skates as closely to my regular setup as possible.

So, rain board madness is done with.... Now dirt board madness? 72mm wheels, tundra grip, 3/4" risers... Hahhaa
