Ramp dogs making slap accounts just to disparage the pale king
And not addressing any of the points he made
Exactly this and Im still waiting to be enlightened on why tom schaar is the second coming of bob.
“Please explain the subtle intricacies of a sport I know nothing about, have never cared about, and will promptly forget the moment it stops being trendy.”
Just adding to the list of non answers. I used to love vert and definitely cared about it.
are there specific points by gh you want addressed? tbh watching his schaar stuff it is kinda hard to separate the normal talking shit from the actual criticisms, the uploads are pretty long and he says a looot of shit. he has moments that also shut your ears off (e.g., not knowing the soccer goal was a bob thing)
if its the relative skill level of schaar compared to bob, I don't really think there IS a retort. bob is the best mega skater of all time and also has the best comp vert run of all time. those are things that are very unlikely to be topped by schaar ever, he doesn't live on a mega ramp and his comp days seem to be behind him. all he can do is make cool videos, which isnt really anything to shit all over imo.
but if it's more about schaar's style or aesthetic, there are pretty obvious differences that make schaar more attractive to watchers. schaar really locks things in, which lets be honest bob and dway and the others always looked like they were barely eeking out the makes. the criticism i've been seeing of schaar's style is that he makes it look TOO easy, but not sure if that's something youd be putting up. beyond that, schaar's parts are a lot shorter and have a lot more spot diversity than is typical for videos with wood ramps, and frankly the edits are just better and more flowy from a filmmaking standpoint. but in terms of technical makes, outside of maybe a dozen of the more techy clips, schaar isn't even trying to chase a ledger of uber nerd nbds. i think people are more just stoked on schaar because he's showing stuff you don't really see anymore in a pretty "catchy" format, which is faithful and well studied to what made the best moments in vert history what they were.
i genuinely dont think its much deeper than that though. and i DO think that merits nom for SOTY, since there really isnt anyone else touching these disciplines this way. but i am NOT someone who would say schaar should have been first or even second, as much as i would've loved a win for the vert community (which is mostly just 80s era cityborn dads and their kids, at least in my experience at vert ramps in the midwest and cali).
the kickback id push is that i dont see gh stans really beating the charges that GH is showing some real ignorance to the vert scene, which is problematic since he's been really aggressively shading the whole thing. in street, its cool because he is a genuine street nerd and a good skater and actually likes street, but i dont think he's ever even dropped in on a vert ramp and he seems to just want to bully it. i would say these criticisms of GH are totally valid and DO undermine his ethos.
which ISNT to say GH's criticisms of accessibility and vert being "rich kid shit" aren't valid, but also i see people acting like skating a vert ramp requires a $2000 season lift ticket. i've never paid a penny to skate a vert ramp, but it does take a lot of gumshoe work to find one, and that's if you're lucky enough to have one within a day drive, which implicitly means youre either in a very lucky rural spot or a city, which does require a degree of geographic privilege (but not that much IMO)
does that suffice or nah? again im not really sure which gh points you're looking for here
