Skaters who skate vintage trucks
« on: July 24, 2022, 09:46:15 PM »
So I know Geoff Rowley skates the Stage VIIs and Gilbert Crockett skated the Stage VIIIs when he was Indy. Besides them, are there any skaters who are known to skate vintage trucks? Especially non Indy riders. I recently set up a brand new pair of Stage VIIIs I found for cheap on ebay and I'm loving them. The grind clearance is kinda ass but they grind beautifully otherwise

In most of the Quasi videos and his more recent IG footage when he had Indys Gilbert was obviously on Stage XI

On that note has anyone ever ridden one of these?  Looks surprisingly sick.  16.25 wheelbase sounds so good

Im currently on a 15.75 WB board from Heated Wheel and it feels amazing.  Lotta shapes to love out there.

Even if this one’s being sold by Dorfman who seems like a total douche

Really makes me appreciate how and why Gonz is so good on big boards, never realized what a beast this thing is

Me, but I like Ace's better. If anyone wants to buy 145mm or 155mm stage 7's I have some with the kingpins knocked out, still tons of life on the hangers. Also have 9" stage 8's mint condition, also kingpins knocked out.

I read the jenkem 'cult of indy' article and Rowley? Is the one who said it. It's funny because I've been trying to find clips of Crockett skating the VIIIs and haven't found a clip where it was obvious

I have some Orions from the early 2000s, I swapped the old, fucked bushings with some Bones hard bushings and they turn great, reminiscent of Indys. I also have some Webb trucks from my childhood that I've been meaning to set a board up with

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

If I had to assume, it would be that he was riding them during his AWS era.

I remember when the stage 11 came out, alot of pros switched over to thunders. Most famously Koston because they raised the height of the truck.

Was that the reason everyone left?

I thought it was something a bit more dark, as even Grosso didn’t mention why he jumped ship (and I don’t think he’d have trouble mentioning it’s because of such a small design change).

I think Grosso's switch to Ace was less of an issue with the actual trucks and more of a concern about NHS and the direction it was going in.

NHS was sold and came under new management. That came around the same time as the trucks moving to china, and NHS going collab crazy. That on top of riders no longer being anything other than royalties

Andy Roy said he left because of Dark Vader Trucks

I was talking about like 2014-2015.

This was like 2013-2014 before the most recent exodus.

If yall remember back in the day, the forged hollow was Koston exclusive signature truck. His stage 10 were 51.5mm tall and when the stage 11 came out they made it 53.5mm. But he started skating Thunders on the down low as soon as the stage 11 were released despite having a signature truck.

Idk

Koston does some weird shit with his trucks tho. I may have screenshotted his story from awhile back, but there looking to be some funny business with where the mounting holes in the venture baseplate were drilled. I think he was on forged as well, which would be lower than 53.5, no?

It always surprised me a bit that some people would ride very specific trucks, given they don't make them anymore or haven't made a lot of the older versions for a long time, so it could be very limiting for them, depending on how often they need to change them out, or what they can get their hands on.

I guess there are still a fairly widely available range if you have enough money or know where to look, but the funny thing is now I think most brands actually have things covered well enough that people could get used to the current versions of whatever truck is out if they had to.

From the assortment of older Indy trucks I have, from Stage five, six, seven, eight, nine and ten, as well as the current versions, sure they all work a little differently, but at least the Stage eleven work really well on normal boards for me, with older ones only on cruisers.

Some older Thunder and Venture trucks are also best on a shelf, rather than on boards, but again that is just me.

I sometimes think that those guys on the older trucks are actually missing out on the best current trucks around, whatever the brand preference or interest.

Just a thought anyway.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

Yeah, the story I got was that NHS saw the success they’ve had with the Santa Cruz logo, and Thrasher’s success with theirs, and they were making big moves to get the Independent brand into a space outside of skateboarding. This upset a lot of the old heads at the same time that their friend of many decades was getting his Indy competitor off the ground. They eventually didn’t move this direction and of course abandoned the cross entirely, but this was part of the cause for the shake-up.

There's truth in this. I have some stage 2 131s and some stage 8 146s and to be honest its more a nostalgia thing. I could see riding older stages when Indy fucked up with Stage 9 but Stage 11 are pretty damn good. The turn is almost as good again, they are lighter, no axle slip and KP clearance is better than it ever was.. However, I still don't understand why the grind feels so good on older stages.

Anyway, I'll l still likely try the Stage 4 reissues if and when they happen just bc they look so damn cool. until then I'm mostly on Ace with the occasional foray into Thunder b/c they both suit my tastes more than stage 11.

I have stage 6 and 8 146. Kingpin clearance is dog shit.  I was able to put vintage Grind King kingpins in the 8s, but those have a little wiggle. The grind is better, but I seem to ride my boards with stage 11 hollows or titanium way more often. The old stages have a wheelbase closer to Ace and don’t have the same pop.
