death metal is better than black metal by a lot
why do you feel this way? Do most people feel this way?
Can't speak for Wayne but for me, I like DM better because it's a form that's all about endless variation. Variations on themes, technique, subject matter, regional styles - pretty much every aspect of the music has been iterated on. That's why there are so many sub genres for a genre that's a little over 30 years old. At a glance it's a box but when you look inside you can see it goes on forever. Of course, you could say this about literally any genre, including BM, a lot of which I love and think is indispensable. There is also endless crossover between the two genres, musicians as well as fans.
The reason I'm not as big on Black Metal is because it was a reaction and a posture against where culture as a whole and Death Metal in particular was going, at least for the second wave Norwegian bands. So there you get things like on purpose poorly recorded music, an aesthetic escalation so severe that dudes in bands are frequently serious crime adjacent, along with an embracing of antisocial behavior that inevitably lets all kinds of supremacy horseshit seep in, all in the name of keeping things close to the one original unifying aesthetic. The choose the box that's mostly just a box and they do it on purpose.
Bottom line, Black Metal would be a whole lot color if the key progenitors of the genre weren't secret Nazis, aesthetically and otherwise. I know for some this is a feature and not a bug.
