In 2023 the whackest thing in skateboarding aren't non core brands (Asics put out a great video)
It's non core skatepros (Beatrice has never put out a great video)
We also had Nico hiraga aka nicotheduffer with a ABD thrasher cover. Skateboard Companies are really doing cool things right now
It's all about profit baby. I think her sucking and being not so good is a big part of the marketing strategy, along with vans and corporations just wanting to push marginalized, untapped groups so it encourages them to buy product.
Great example of this: Sean Pablo and Sage. I read a jenkem article back after cherry dropped and those kids were blowing the fuck up. It was about how cherry and them wearing chuck taylors made a huge spike in sales for chuck taylors at skateshops, etc. Sean and Sage are not even close to being the best skateboarders. They have great style but they do the same like 6 tricks constantly.
The point is that by pushing people that aren't technically good you're encouraging far more people to go out buy a skateboard and some skate shoes and skate. Skating a 20 stair rail or doing an insane technical trick on a ledge is fucking hard and intimidating, and a lot of people probably look at it like fuck all that. But by showing people you can just do some ollies, some ride on grinds, a shuv it, is way way more marketable and encourages way more people to buy skate shit and for the businesses to profit.
