She was America’s Sweetheart at that time. Pre-Bobby Whitney was the cutest. Just watch, I Wanna Dance With Somebody’. Adorable.

I love Whitney too. Her voice was amazing. Same with ah the girl who bit her style who name escapes me.

The one who sings crazy high. I hear it and I get so emotional everytime I think of her.

Who was that famous Freestyle Grrl who was down with Stevie B? She was amazing.

I was going through IG stories and there was one from FA that said that she’s been on since 2013. All of the Beatles’ studio albums were made in the amount of time she’s been on FA.

I like to think our resident Frenchie slappers score as much ass as Serge Gainsbourg has, while living on a diet of wine, cigarettes and baguettes.

pretty accurate....well except for the "scoring" part    :P

->No Wave Comply: I'm impressed, monsieur est connaisseur!  I also love the comedies Gabin did. "Un Singe en hiver" and "La traversée de Paris" are absolute classics.

oh and just to add to Serge Gainsbourg's dirty old man reputation: he also made France Gall sing this song that is about entirely about giving head....Legend has it she did not understand the innuendo at the time!

sorry couldn't resist.

Back on topic. French chanson is the shit – although my most like frankophone is a Belgian one: Jacques Brel – not as seductive as Gainsbourgh though

I’m really struggling to get what the deal is with this  alcoholic french pedo. Is it avante-garde spoken word or what? I’m not getting any musicality out of this besides drums. Please advise

I first heard Serge Gainsbourg in the Stereo promo video. I know "Bonnie and Clyde" probably his most well known song, but nobody was making beats like that in 1968. After a million listens, I still don't know whether it's sexy as hell or laugh out loud hilarious. I guess it can be both.

Yep. "Cargo Culte" is for sure another jam off the Melody Nelson album.

I've never checked out Jean Gabin's comedies, so I'll have to look for those titles at my local Vidéothèque. (Seriously. We have a video store here called Vidéothèque. The owner is a major Francophile and their International/French section is vast.) My favorite French director is probably Jean-Pierre Melville or Claude Chabrol (both of whom never worked with Gabin, unfortunately).

Yep. I definitely know all about Gainsbourg writing "Les sucettes" for France Gall, getting her to sing about sucking on "lollipops."

I take it you don't speak French. As for the music, well if you don't hear it I guess you simply don't.

By the way, we'd be remiss to appreciate Melody Nelson without mentioning Jean-Claude Vannier. The musicality in that album is mostly his I believe. Same goes for other Gainsbourg albums. He worked with some of the best library musicians. Arthur Greenslade on the Bonnie and Clyde album for example. Also went to Jamaica to make reggae with Sly and Robbie.

Another Vannier Gainsbourg score worth a listen:

Massive Attack had to have heavily sampled Serge I imagine?

Or really Trip Hop in general.
