i sometimes think about how abstract skateboarding is as a sport/hobby/lifestyle. most other sports can be tied into three things - displays of human strength/power/athleticism, games imitating a battle or sports that show how we can conquer/manipulate the natural world. where does skateboarding fit into this? its roots are obviously in surfing, which is a sport focused on manipulating or conquering the ocean. but skateboarding is a sport where we manipulate human architecture by riding this wooden plank with wheels that sort of looks like a surfboard, but at this point it's obviously very far beyond surfing.
idk, sometimes i just trip out on how abstract skateboarding is. imagine trying to tell your ancestor from 500 years ago that your favorite thing to do is 'grinding' concrete with your wooden toy which has these specially made metal axles purpose build for the sport.
