Not only is skateboarding a sport by almost any definition, but the constant conversation and speculation here about professional skaters moves, the discussion of the various skate "teams", the SOTY race, Street League and X-Games etc. are all functionally identical to the way fans of football, baseball, etc. all discuss their preferred sports.

I almost never hear IRL conversations like “can you believe Leticia is off Monarch!?!”. No one cares. Aesthetics is more important.

To me this is mostly online nerd shit. The majority of conversations I hear about skateboarding (even here) is about who did what and where, who’s got good style, which videos are good. I almost never hear IRL conversations like “can you believe Leticia is off Monarch!?!”. No one cares. Aesthetics is more important.

Online, skaters seem close to being like the fighting game community. Seemingly the same type of people in both.

Out skating, skaters are more similar to hoop heads talking shop and playing pick up games.

Here’s an unpopular opinion. Skating in the winter>skating in the summer. I live in Massachusetts and I’d rather skate in 30 degree weather than 85. Once you warm up you’re good when it’s cold but hot weather makes a two hour session feel like an 8 hour session. Plus by boards get soggy after like two and half weeks in this humidity

I absolutely agree. It will rain here for the next 7 days at least. That doesn't really happen that often in the winter for some reason. And you feel a bit more protected against the hard concrete when you wear 3+ layers of clothing. And also less people outside then.

Winter's not that rad to skate in the northwest, once November hits its all rain, then hail, then snow for at least 4 months. my town is missing an indoor park, and the city removed the park under the freeway 7 years ago....

This is weird to hear, you must be around a lot of jock types. Everyone I’ve skated with wanted to learn a trick cause they saw someone else do it really sick and they wanted to emulate that. I learned hardflips because Herman and nollie fs 3 flips from watching CK1

I just want to see cool shit. If a friend learns a trick I’m genuinely stoked, both for them and for me cause I get to see it.

Unpopular opinion- I don’t like new griptape because it’s harder to tell which is the nose. I’m happy when it gets some grime on it

As someone who’s also living in mass, this summer in general has just kinda sucked this year. So I been focusing more on cruising and slappies to stay skating without getting the fatigue from the sun. Plus waking up early to skate is good
