Omar Salazar’s Mindfield part does all the things you want from an opening part more than any other opening part ever. It sets the tone, has bangers, brings the energy, and (the underrated part) somehow manages to not be the best or second best part in a video. Even more impressive because it was assumed Mike Mo’s Fully Flared part would hold that title for much longer than it did. It was a really good Inspectah Deck 1st verse of video parts.
[close]

That Mike Mo part hasn't stood the test of time IMO, it doesn't measure up openers to Appleyard in Sorry, EE in Baker 3, Arto in Menikmati, Heath in TIS, AVE in multiple classics, etc etc
[close]

I think the criteria is reasonably unknown opening a major video..... a lot of those guys were pretty well established.  With Mike Mo, he was not known, an am, and he arguably had the best part in the vid....

throwing in Westgate in Stay Gold to the conversation

The song kicks right in, dude is hauling ass at every spot, ton of lines, pretty unknown at the time

Really sets a pace and I feel some of the midsection can't keep up. probably wouldnt claim his part is *the best* in the video, but he separated the wheat from the chaff for sure

That's unpopular? Andy Anderson is pretty lame
[close]

The unpopular part would be trying to like him in the first place.

Not sure how this is going to be received in this day and age, but I still don't care for any street grabs whatsoever with the single exception of Wes Kremer's 180 Benihanas.

Street grabs might be fun as a B-roll goof. If you make your career off that type of skating then you're a kook.

I’ve been a loyal Canada Dry drinker for years but dare I say it, seagrams may have them beat. It actually tastes like ginger

I like the Canada dry bold it has that ginger taste but it's hard to find where I'm at, I'll have to switch to seagrams.  I just had my first Reeds NA ginger beer and it is my new favorite beverage

Ginger beers are my shit. Reeds usually being the go to. So nice on a hot summer day with a joint in hand. It gives me a natural jolt and wakes things up between the ears.

Surf rock is cooler than any skate-related music subgenre

This is true

Most bands that include skateboarders are not good. Bad shit is a very fitting name for that band. Warish and Harsh Toke are ok and not too offensive.

I recently had the displeasure of seeing Allen Losi's band One Less Zero because a mutual friend had some free tickets and my wife and I had nothing better to do. Would not recommend. It was cool talking to / hanging out with Losi though. He's a really nice guy.

I do like Grand Scheme though. I'm sure there are other decent bands with skateboarders that I just can't think of at the moment.

FIDLAR is fucking rad and I would loosely consider the Spits a skate punk band so there’s some stuff out there. I think the problem is that skate punk is just punk where surf rock is really its own sort of thing.

I liked Andy at first because he seemed to be such a nerd and I’ve a soft spot for freestyle skating. I want to be open minded with these things.
Now I’m just so done with his dumb face popping on my youtube feed daily and also fuck his stupid Spaceballs-helmet. His style on board is so ’anti-style’ that every time I see his skating I have to watch Nate Jones part right after.

Tyler Surrey is Mark Suciu for people that aren't smug about having liberal arts degrees. I don't think this is unpopular as much as it's just unspoken

I'm pretty sure literally no one thinks this and that this is just another attempt at judging Mark for being an upper middle class kid that went to college.

Yeah I think there’s some weird resentment towards him for not needing the skate industry/not needing to look cool but succeeding anyway because he’s such a diligent skate rat nerd.

Transworld sucked and anyone claiming to be disappointed by its demise is a liar. It brought nothing to the table.

Thrasher: Raw, gnarly skateboarding
Skateboarder: Focus on writing and presentation
SLAP: Covered art and skateboarding
Big Brother: Silly and provocative
The Skateboard Mag: Focus on photography

How did Transworld differentiate itself in this sea of options? Annual product issues? Being squeaky clean? It offered no reason for its existence besides its legacy.

(Yes I know all of these magazines didn’t exist at the same time, and my descriptions above are pretty generalized, but at the risk of making this post too long my point still stands).

Sight Unseen is one of my favorite videos. The vids they released were decent, but I really hated the talking before the actual footage. I don’t know how people managed to listen to the ramblings of semi-literate pros, but are so annoyed by Mark Sucui.

obviously everything they did in the 90s and the videos (up to a period) were great, but i started skating in 2003 and within a few years i already felt i was too "old" for transworld, by that point the skaters they featured and their regular columns/design choices felt mostly aimed towards kids, not to mention the awful ads (deodorant? oscar meyer? the fucking military?) were offputting and constant turnover between staff and owners was apparent. none of these magazines were perfect (maybe the skateboard mag for a few years) but to claim "we failed transworld" when they couldn't keep up with the competition of the time feels silly

Tony Hawks "Beyond" feature was always good.  TWS also had better interviews than Thrasher in an era when pros were a lot weirder/more interesting (Gonz, Blender).
