I've had a pair of KSL and am about to retire them so here is my personal review:

TL;DR They performed and looked better than expected and are a really solid middle of the road (padding, support, and bulk) cupsole. The toe box wasn't my favorite shape, I found that the sole foam didn't hold its initial firmness as well as I would like, and I wore through the flick stitching fairly quick. These are all nuances that are unique to me and I think they compete with anything from ASICS or NB and I would choose them over a Dunk, Busenitz, or Samba any day of the week.

Pros
  • Pretty good blend of board feel and padding
  • Lifespan of the sole was great, better than my last pair of NB 440
  • They look and feel slimmer on foot than the product pics
  • They are a great middle of the road option. If you like an ASICS Japan, NB 600, or even a Dunk these are right up your alley. Don't expect to love them if you need a super thin or super thick shoe, but that should be obvious.
  • The chunkiness of the rear of the shoe made them have an excellent heel flip flick
  • I like the minimal branding. At first I hated it in pics, but as soon as it was on foot I didn't think it was bad at all.
  • There's not much to dislike. That's sorta rare these days as shoes tend to be polarizing.

Cons
  • The grip started pretty good, but got worse over time. Coming from Japans these had a bit less grip, but it's not "bad". Probably on the lower end of the spectrum for my preferences.
  • The toe stitching and flick area wore faster than expected. I didn't glue the stitches and busted through them quickly.
  • This is entirely personal but I didn't love the toe shape or the flick. I really like the 440 and Vickka: pointy but not necessarily narrow or as extreme as a Busenitz. I don't find the Japan to be as pointy as I'd prefer but it somehow works.
  • I didn't love the midsole foam over time. It started out great but as of now feels much soggier. The upper didn't bag out as much as a Vans or Blazer even, but I feel that they held their shape less well than the ASICS or NB I have used recently.

Detailed Review

I bought these entirely on a whim and I haven't liked most of Emerica's cups from the last 15 years. I really didn't like the Reynolds 3, but I did like the Spanky High and Wino Cups. I saw the initial product pics and wasn't super stoked, but then I saw them in person and they looked as solid as the initial spy shots that got people excited.

Fit is TTS. I have pointier, but not narrow feet. I was coming off the Japan S, which always seemed a bit too short and narrow, but mostly worked. I was worried that the midsole would feel a bit too soft like a lot of the current IPath I have tried but it was a really good middle ground. Not a board like the 480, not too soft like Wafflecup. Break in time was really minimal and they were intuitive in that I didn't feel I had to adjust or get used to the shoe.

They lasted longer and performed better than I expected. I've drank the large brand koolaid a bit too much probably to justify to myself that wearing shoes and logos that I don't find aesthetically pleasing is "worth the superior performance". They definitely lasted longer than my 440V2 and recent Adidas, but not as long as my Japans or 600. I hated the 480 and don't really need a 993 or 1010 so I can't compare to those. The midsole did get a bit soft for my liking over the life of the shoe and I wore through the flick stitching faster than I would have liked. At the same time the Ollie/Nollie area is perfectly placed for me and I had far less wear there than any NB I have skated.

Overall I think they punch above their weight. G6 or not they perform the same as the larger brands and are a great option in a super saturated market. I dislike the big Etnies push from Sole Tech,  but respect that the brand is trying to move forward past the last iteration. I'd recommend them over a lot of the more popular shoes out there and I would skate them again, but right now like a few other options slightly more. My decision would be based more on the color way and price than anything else.

Thought those were some suede toe Heritics at a glance. Sole on the bottom didn't look like the OG-1/Heretic sole, so appreciate the confirmation it's a new Leo shoe!

not sure who is doing their distro in Japan at the moment, but only getting limited colorways from each release and if you want those colorways you have to go through 3rd party for double the RRP

I have the Mute and the KSL3 - both white leather colorways. Mute feels significantly more plush and forgiving in the toe box than the KSL. Mute feels like a better built shoe, and I'm not sure if that's because I'm biased to more padding & paneling than less or not. Both are size 12

The KSL 3, while a good low-profile NB440-esque shoe, is lacking in "oomph" all throughout the shoe for me. A little tight across the toes, even though it looks spacious in photos. A bit thin and low on the collar. Seems like it's made for a more "dainty" foot than mine? I'm curious if suede colorways feel better. Anyone have both and are interested in sharing details of the fit & feel difference, please?

That said,  I'm gonna play around with insole swaps and walk around in my KSL3 to break them in, regardless

Got the mutes a few weeks ago and really wanted to like them and gave them a solid college try but ended up hating them. Didnt like the fit or feel shoe looks great though.

Damn I was loading these up as my next shoe. Currently switching between eS Swift 1.5s and Emerica Pillars. Mainly the Pillars but will run the Swifts this week. My only grip about the Pillars is they feel 1/2 size too big, both them and the Swifts are size 8 and they feel wildly different in size from each other.

Is this size issue a one off or an Emerica thing?

I feel like most vulc shoes from Nidecker seem to run a big larger as cupsole models. Some people have the same size across all models but other people go half size down on vulcs. But it also comes down to specific foot shapes. I would love to chill in some slip-ons but I am unable to get my feet into the shoes.

FWIW I really liked my Mutes and found them to fit my relatively wide/bunioned feet well in my regular size. I’m on the KSL III now just because I like the slightly less padded look of them, but I believe they’re using the same cupsole which I find to be an excellent balance of boardfeel and support.

Awesome to hear!

Once I burn through the 2 pair I have now, I will defiantly have the Mutes on my short list

These Pillars tho...FIRE, I can only imagine how much better they would be 1/2 size smaller

My not Swifts are cups, and they are killing my feet and back.  My vulc Pillars, even at a 1/2 size to big are SO much better.  At this point not sure if I want to try another cupsole. But I really like the KSL G6 and the Mute, I am glad the Mute has both bottoms

I had the KSL before trying some Japan Pro again and the two are quite similar for me. The Japan ended up being a bit more durable and slightly grippier so if I had to pick between the 2 I'd go Japan, but if people are curious how they compare to larger brands they're kinda in the Japan/600/suede Dunk overall feel more or less. I don't think I will buy a Soletech product again until they drop this influencer enablement shit that always finds a way to clog my feeds. I don't need to know what a fried SoCal trustfunder thinks of a reboot that should have never happened.

Oh god dammit

I had so many pairs of those they were my fuckin favorite for a while

I remember having the ones that were black in the back with a light pink toe, and my most favorite, the camels, they were like all wheat timberland color... And I also really really miss my leather white & green pair goddamn

EE 1's were ahead of their time

Man the ones I had, I would bust through the toe, and there was a layer of rubber, and then when I got through that there was another layer of leather. Shit was so sick. I remembered I got some firsts for me in that shoe. I learned frontside flips in them and got my first flip tricks down big stuff
