I don't think anyone mentioned SLAVE yet. But when you add it to this list of sketchy logos and names and references and the it sure doesn't help. I realize it might not have been "his" brand entirely (I think?) but he helped fund it and distribute and profited from it, etc.
isn't $lave co-owned or co-founded by some black dude named j-hon or something?
And isn't the name supposed to mean something like "slave for the money"
That's one "interpretation" however still not what people think of when the word "slave" is used.
The word "holocaust" has its own definition and isn't specific to THE Holocaust. However I wouldn't name a brand that and then have to explain "oh but i mean it differently bro!"
The same thing for WarSaw. Why name a brand something that has a sketchy connotation then you end up having to explain it all the time? Why repeatedly choose logos related to white supremacy? Weird.
Again, just a lot of questionable things that pile up with this dude. Its never ending.
Plenty of things had iffy racial connotations that people rethought after George Floyd/Ferguson. The Holocaust is only really used in one context, slave has many literal and symbolic uses and the Ke$ha-fication of the name makes it clear what the brand is referencing.
Jamie is just a guy who rips off rock n roll and metal bands and fonts and a lot of those bands (like Joy Division being previously known as Warsaw — as if Joy Division doesn’t have a likely worse association) used iffy imagery whether they really understand the impact. It just looks cool to them and thus to Jamie.
Im no fan of Jamie, but no one’s usual hen clucking as he gets in his righteous indignation lather is a bit much. Jamie’s a 50 y/o high school drop out from Alabama. We really think he has any historical grasp?
Fully agree with you. Not arguing or disagreeing with the points in this thread. I think we are all feeling similar and adding on observations and thoughts. Do I think Jamie is a NAZI? No. Do I think he purposely chooses imagery that has been appropriated by hate groups, No.
He is a moron who steals ideas, doesn't do research, doesn't learn from his mistakes and possibly in that sociaopath realm of thinking it is all ok and he is invincible or some shit. I can't possibly imagine being as uncreative as him when there are so many opportunities to be creative instead of stealing everything.
But what I really canot fathom is this. If i were to start a brand, let's take Mystery since it was so long ago. If I were to start a brand and people informed me that my logo can be linked to the SS and the Holocaust. I would be fucking mortified and it would be changed immediately. I think most normal people would be mortified and deeply apologetic. and especially more careful moving forward.
Maybe some people wouldn't be as mortified about getting called out on ripping off Smashing Pumpkins, Kiss, Detroit Rock City, etc. But many also would and perhaps change their trajectory for how they get "inspiration" for brands too after.
So you have this dude, who has more of these types of incidents or issues or coincidences with sketchy logos and names than anyone in skateboarding has ever had, yet he keeps going. He doesn't research what he is doing, he doesn't try and improve or steer clear. Warsaw is a pretty easy one to know might be a problem. Especially if you are basing it off music you love so much, you know it's ties to the Holocaust. A normal person would be so much more careful moving forward.
So the question really is why does he persist? Why doesn't he change his course? Apologize? Do more research? Ask around? Anything? Does he ever feel weird or bad? Does he ever feel foolish? I'm not into forced apologies or even cancelling but its perplexing how brazen or clueless or both that he is.
Im not sure about the no one thing? I never brought him up. maybe i missed something but i also think anyone here calling anyone "righteous" in an insulting way is pot calling the kettle black to the fullest extent.
