REST IN PEACE DAVE SMITH
« on: March 11, 2024, 12:52:16 AM »

from Matt Price’s instagram

Man... either you gotta say everything or say nothing at all. I'm gonna try everything. It's impossible to really explain someone like Dave Smith.
From the first time I met him 20 years ago Dave has been one of the most genuine and pure people l've had the pleasure to know. He loved skateboarding more than most of us will love anything and he gave everything he had to everyone around him and took very little for himself. If you knew Dave, chances are that he filmed you for hours at a ledge spot when it was 100 degrees after he had already worked an 8 hour shift. Or maybe he picked you up across town and brought you to a skate session and introduced you to all your favorite skaters you never had the balls to say hi to. Or maybe you just shared a slice of pizza or a beer with him and got to talk endlessly about skate videos or noseslides. Dave inspired me regularly to go skate and try new things and keep pushing myself even as my knees hurt more and my tricks started to slip away. He was out there doing it every day the same way he had been for over three decades. I'm just so sad thinking about what everyone lost today. I'm really gonna miss you bud.

Real sad to hear about this. i hope all of his close friends and family are getting by. he was a real inspiration to a lot of people and one of the biggest supporters of skating in Arizona. Rest in peace Dave Smith.

Just to mirror what has already been said, Ghetto D was an AZ legend on and off the board. Will never forget the hype he gave me when wrapping up my last homie video back when I was living in AZ. Gonna have to get some nose slides in for Dave this week. Rest in Peace.

There is a Gofundme set up to help with memorial costs.

I never really post on here anymore, but Matt Price's Instagram caption is so spot on it hurts.

I met Dave through mutual friends during my first trip to AZ in 2005. He did in fact film me for hours on end at a manual pad after he worked an 8 hour shift.

After that initial trip, he came to stay with us in Philly for a week in 2007 (getting to skate a bunch of spots he loved from videos) and I made tons of trips back to AZ. On some of these subsequent trips he did in fact introduce me to pros I was too shy to speak to (Rob Welsh, Ronnie Creager, etc).

Dave had 8 or 9 years on me, and seeing him still push himself skating in 2023/2024 has been an incredible beacon of light. He really loved the shit out of skating for all the right reasons... he never rested on his laurels or "the glory days" and I thank him forever for being one of the key people to instill that in me.

Dude really is the absolute best, and the world is worse off without him.
