I saw this movie at Sundance. gonna champion this movie.

if you were born between 1990-'97, this film might resonate with you quite a bit. very millennial pilled and nice hint of skating nostalgia in 2008.

when the opening credits song was the belle and sebastian crail couch song i knew it was gonna be good

I feel like mid90s was for millennials born in the early to mid 80s. I'm a year older than Jonah Hill, so I feel like Mid90s really resonated with me when I saw it in theaters.  It caputured the pre-internet days of skating. DiDi looks really good, but can definitely see that it's for the later generation born in the 90s

DiDi feels like the Fresh Off the Boat source material not the sitcom

That’s the first thing I thought when I saw this! I wonder where they got it. Curious about where the story is based too.

yooo being a first generation Pakistani American - i can totally relate with my parents not being down with skateboarding compared to other Pakistani- American kids in my area. Probably wont be at gnarly as kids but also a little better than Mid90s.

I love that the trailer used the song from the Cory Kennedy edit.

Thanks for the heads up! Looks nice. On the whole reviews of this film seem to be very positive, which is a good sign. In terms of relatability, what I gather from articles so far is that the specific period (2000's) and 'place' (Taiwanese-American, in what I gather is Californian suburbia), will make some things more recognizable for some than for others, but the coming of age theme itself is pretty universally relatable.

There's not an awful lot of mention of/comparison to Mid 90's. I also suspect the skateboarding aspect in the film is limited. It does get compared several times to Eight Grade (2018); which I never heard of, but am definitely going to give a watch this week.

Ah, shit, I didn't read that there was someone who had already seen it, before I went down a little Rotten Tomatoes rabbit hole there.

That’s the first thing I thought when I saw this! I wonder where they got it. Curious about where the story is based too.

Story is based in Fremont, CA (Bay Area), just like Caliskatz was. Caliskatz owner is tapped into the local skate scene and the director got the Caliskatz hoodie from the former owner.

The movie is really really good. The director is still a great skater (and used to be a Berrics filmer) and sprinkles in so many goodies that only skaters would understand.

I also suspect the skateboarding aspect in the film is limited.

The film is about what a skaterat's life is like when they're roughly 13-16. There's skating, but there's family, friends, girls, parties, insecurity, and everything else that comes with our lives too.

Saw a screener for this. It's good (and an easy watch at 94 minutes).

To those coming in expecting a huge skate film, the skating is used as a plot device and the big trick is a back 50. That said, there are too many small details to see it anything less than fully genuine.

It is KIDS (1995) for Gen Z which is quite sad and depressing given they don't look like they are having the time of their lives and living life to the utmost, but, a monotone reaction to their inner monologue, fear of the other, and their helicopter Mom's voice or even grandmother's presence.

It’s no hard to produce something better than mid90s. That was mid AF.

I'm looking forward to this one. Idk how prominent skateboarding is to the overall plot, but as an Asian American, I can already relate to stuff in the trailer like having your self worth determined by grades, navigating between traditional Asian values and fitting into American society, finding your identity, etc. Seems like a solid coming of age story.
