I mean taking gold in the first ever skateboarding olympics, in your home country, that's pretty hard to top, especially when these events are every 4 years, it's not like anyone should bank on winning multiple gold medals in a row. Yuto could do it though 100%. Personally would like to see him have some fun, take some time for himself and then go full street in 2025 and beat us over the head with the most undeniable SOTY campaign ever.

yeah, no thanks. That era of shitbag drunk guys marketing the LA party lifestyle to teenagers had its run. All the PD guys are either sober or completely washed. Hope Yuto doesn’t throw his career away because drunk is fun. That fun don’t last.

You know what else had its run? Doofy Boy and gigantic pants and puffy shoes, but here we are again.

The PD train comes back to service, then it’s just another era reliving itself.

puffy shoes are back? Haven’t seen that irl but that’s awful if true. That was the no board feel era and I hated it. One Lakai weighed like 9ilb back then. Ed Templeton’s shoe had a Nike air max bubble in the sole, for what? Just a bad time for style imo. Anyway the possdrunx era needs to stay dead because that shit had real world consequences for many people I knew and some never recovered. This new gen seems to not be as into alcohol which I think is awesome.

it's really hard to skate at that level. one bad run and you're done. nyjah got seventh in paris. alexis got beat by a 12 year old kid who had been skating for like a year after years of gymnastics.

He loves the 90s so he’s cosplaying a 90s pro and aging out prematurely to make way for the Ginbot etc

Damn let the boy live. He seems like he’d be fun to drink with. Who cares if he doesn’t want to do the Olympics or any contests anymore. He’s very good at skateboarding.

You think that was an era and localized to LA? That all the SF dudes in the early 90's weren't experimenting and the GX crew isn't permafried? That all the Euro skaters aren't spending their checks on blow? That lifestyle is pretty consistent in young people without much responsibility and has persisted in skating through the decades. Just because Mason Silva doesn't seem like a Pissdrunx doesn't mean a lot of current pros aren't low key piling.

there's a difference between normal partying as a youth and making it an entire sub-brand (actual brand?) and ruining people's lives for the culture, though

He has the same problem as Jamie Griffin. When your passion for skateboarding is so shallow to be defined by winning competitions, that passion is easy lost. He won the big one and realized it means nothing in the grand scheme of skateboarding history. As skateboarders we will never have respect for contest tryhards. Our respect will go to the hammers in the streets, preferably down a gap of significant length and height (no flat gaps) and no protective equipment

Do the Olympics pay money for placing or just give out medals/ clout for winning?

Each country pays an incentive:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incentives_for_Olympic_medalists_by_country

$45k for Yuto at the last Olympics.

Track and Field will start paying medallists too:

to be clear I would love for him to walk away from it on his own terms, but somehow I get the impression that's not what's happening. And the little I know of Japanese culture doesn't make it seem like he'll find a great deal of support back home for turning his back on competition (or not doing well in them). I hope Shane takes him to the side and offers him support and the right way forward (a filmer and travel budget for a year to come back with two parts to end skateboarding).

is this not all complete speculation? The mf just annihilated Tampa Pro. maybe he’s injured and couldn’t skate the recent world skate contests.

He skated in Shanghai and didn't make it into semi-finals, five other Japanese skaters did, three of whom went on to finals. Shanghai is the highest scored qualifier event, making it very hard for Yuto to get up into the top three of Japanese skaters with only one qualifier left. He'd basically have to win it and the other Japanese guys would have to have the worst day ever for him to overtake them. Commentators wouldn't shut up about it.

Why is everyone overreacting about someone having an off day at a skate contest?

My man, spending hours if not days for many years alone in a 2x2 leaky wooden shed alchemizing all sorts of flatground wizardry/buffoonery does not indicate a shallow passion for skateboarding. It's the opposite of that.
