My main gripe with tariffs is how the hell is US supposed to transition to manufacturing economy with no industrial backbone and an obvious limit on how many and which natural goods the country can produce?

Also, there seems to be a history with nations becoming very industrious and subsequently becoming war-time economies….

it cant

My mom told me if I voted for Kamala that gas prices would go up, groceries would sky rocket, and we’d go into a recession — bascially life would get more expensive.

So today, I went to her and told her I know when to admit when I’m wrong. I told her I voted for Kamala and now groceries and goods are getting expensive because of tariffs, gas is almost $5/gallon here in SoCal, the Stock Market is crashing, and we’re headed towards a recession.

She wasn’t amused.

Guess some people just don’t know how to accept an apology.

I finally understand how politics can be so divisive and end friendships and cause rifts in a family. I have a corporate job with an import car company, I don’t make a ton of money and am by no means in the same stratosphere as a lot of my wealthy neighbors here in SoCal. These tariffs are really going to screw us because we import a lot of our cars. Mind you we’ve invested billions in US production in recent years and employ thousands of Americans. The implications of these tariffs on the bottom line for my family and my co workers families’ could have a noticeable impact on our quality of life. Knowing that one of my friends voted for this would be a deal breaker.

I'm amused. Hope things work out between you and your mum.

She hates it when I talk politics to her. To her, it's harassment to let her know what Trump is doing. In her head, she doesn't want to be bothered about it. She just wants to vote for the Republican, go back to her life, then assume they're doing everything fine.

She -- like my dad -- is retired Navy, so the military mentality of "Republican Good, Liberal Bad" is kind of ingrained in her. And my dad. Like they'll vote for Trump because they can't bring themselves to vote Democrat. But they also can't bring themselves to openly praise him.

But I know she sees the rising costs of life, the VA Dept firings, as well as threats to medicaid. But she just brushes me off and focuses on playing with my son and the other grandkids.

Was talking with my accountant after doing our taxes and my wife and I asked what his outlook on the next four years of taxes. He basically said with Trump's tax plan ending this year, he doesn't have hope that it'll be any better. Basically, he's expecting more dialing back and caps on what the middle/lower class can write off in order to offset what can save millionaires even more money in the long run.

So, yea...this is winning, right?

Yes it is winning. You’re just not pulling your bootstraps hard enough(like those who were born into wealth)! Stop being so lazy and pay more taxes for the wealthy!

I feel like we are all being scammed here. I hope no one panic sold their 401K over the past few days.

I never knew it was possible for me to be smug about investing and losing money. Most the folks I know that voted Trump definitely have more money than me and are down more, plus have a bunch of kids. I'm over here like "That's what you fucking get, he said he was gonna do this you idiots!" Weird times. This shit is no doubt a long con. Meme economy is right.

My fishing homie is from Laos. He was brought here as a kid by the US government because his dad fought for the US during all of that secret SE Asian stuff. Anyway, he’s on Federal Probation, and has to check in next month. He’s so sure that he’s about to grabbed by ICE and be deported when he goes. He has no connection to Laos. Feel awful for the guy.

That’s horrible.

I was friends with a co worker who was born in Mexico that recently quit. Odd thing was he deleted his social media so I couldn’t hit him up. I found out his parents were here “illegally” and I remember him posting some “anti American” fuck ice shit so I hope nothing happened to his family but I think something has. Really nice kid I hope everything’s good.

quit beers. picked up a board. now I damage the outside of my body

Anyone else feeling a sort of externally-caused depression due to this mess we're in? I've noticed how much it's all weighing on me and that it's making it hard to enjoy normal every day things.

I'll be losing my job next month because of him, but weirdly that's the least of my concerns right now. Witnessing the gutting of an imperfect but functioning government by soulless weirdos that have no pride, morals, or any passion for the pillars of the USA just hurts.

I know people have always been greedy and human history is fucked up, but the lack of decorum and straight up lawlessness of the executive branch is freaking me out. It's just fucked all around and I don't see how we're going to dig ourselves out of this and find some sort of "normal" again.

@Gnarfunkell Sorry about the job. That fucking sucks.

Yea, the whole thing is out of control. The complete disregard for due process is scary. The willingness to make impulsively stupid decisions that will have short and long term effects is terrifying. And the insane propaganda and cult of personality is fucking terrifying.

I feel like our best hope is that the Dems sweep the House and Senate and impeach the shit out of these people. I don't think they'll do it, but it would be a way for this nightmare to end.

@Gnarfunkell I'm so sorry to hear about your job loss and difficulties. I, and any other reasonable American, struggle daily with what is happening and the feeling of powerlessness. Learning that our rights are not inalienable and checks-and-balances was not enforceable has been a tough transition, and even if things recover politically, the illusion of it all can never return. I, personally, have the most trouble with comprehending how other people can seem to be enjoying the cruelty and misfortune.

That being said, please please try to enjoy the little things in front of you. It is ok to take a break from the news and social media and just focus on some of the good things that can come with the human experience: foods you enjoy, skating, music, playing with your dog, your favorite movie... whatever it may be.

Sadly, having compassion and dignity is an act of rebellion for an American these days, so if you can express that just a little bit then you have done something to fight the horrible shift in values we are experiencing. We may not be able to end the hate, violence, emotional stupidity, bullying, and cruelty being inflicted upon us (and infecting so many), but we can make the world a little better for someone in a small way and that does make a difference.

Thank y'all for the kind words and for commiserating with me. Already texted a homie and we're going to meet up after work for a bike road through the forest. Thankfully I live somewhere with lots of nature to enjoy, which always lets me experience some child-like sense of awe.

El Salvadorian jail won't let the US Democratic Senator talk to the kidnapped man from Maryland.

That fact that they won't let him talk to the man leads me to believe he was already killed and they and Trump's admin didn't want him back in the US to talk about the experience.

This is so bad. I can’t believe we’re gonna get fucked by a Texan named Chip Roy. Does he even know about overseas military bases? … We need some new requirements for when legislation gets proposed.
Every shithead voting for this should be required to list every location of election offices in their districts and provide all of the documents they are expecting of others.

Anonymous posted an aerial photo from above the prison. The resolution of the photo isn’t great, but it shows what looks like a large flesh colored blob surrounded by red stained ground.  The area is about half the size of a soccer field and flanked by 2 buildings.  Other photos show an area on the perimeter of the prison that was previously covered in trees and grass, now showing an absence of trees and a large area of freshly disturbed ground.

I think this place is legitimately an extermination camp. And American citizens are next.  The eugenics talk is ramping up.  RFK Jr just made a statement talking about autistic people as if they are barely human.

Protesters/dissenters/political and ideological threats will be labeled “terrorists” and disappeared.  Then will be the disabled and sick, “for the survival of our nation”.  Just mirroring 1930s right down the line, except fueled by capitalism and religious self righteousness.  We’re on a collision course. Prepare yourselves. This isn’t going to get better until it gets a lot worse
