Stephen Miller and Bannon are probably very excited about this situation. It is a distraction from some of the big issues that Trump and the GOP just want to go away.
The Musk/Trump--temporary--fall out doesn't make them look good. After sitting in so many meetings, Musk probably has more to disclose than the obvious Trump-Epstein connection. No one in the admin wants Musk to air the Trump admin's dirty laundry. Not to mention the right doesn't want to cut Musk loose as they want his money.
The bill being moved through Congress is going to push people off medicaid, cut SNAP (food stamp) benefits, cut green energy funding, and increase the country's debt with some new tax cuts and by extending previous Trump cuts. It is going to harm the "working class" and benefit the very wealthy. Not a good look for the party who is pretending to be on the side of workers.
And, Trump's tariff nonsense has been whiplashing the economy around and isn't generating positive headlines.
None of these things make our TV obsessed president look good.
And none of these are single news-cycle issues.
Getting into a fight with Newsome about "lawlessness" in California due to "protecting illegal immigrants 'criminals'" is going to distract and excite his base. Immigration is his most popular issue. The last poll I saw noted that 37% of Americans don't give a fuck about due process for non-citizens and over 50% of Americans think Trump is prioritizing criminals not the law abiding people who dreamt of a better life. Waymos on fire, cop cars smashed with rocks, and people waving Mexican flags is a wet dream for the administration. A few incidents can be framed and sold as if it is the 1992 riots all over again. It is a story FOX dreams of to sell their fear based hatred.
I'd argue the best way to protect people and make sure they are treated properly is to teach everyone their rights when interacting with authorities, give them a script to follow when interacting with agents, and put an American flag on every single house in LA county.
The rabble will figure out ways to hate (think of the legal Haitian immigrant hate used to help Trump's campaign), but some narratives are easier than others to spin. Let's make the narrative as difficult as possible to spin.
