More skaters should snowboard

Snowboarding is just skateboarding for people who’s dads own the dealership.

Nah, shitty take. Not everyone lives in Vail or whatever.
My friends and I didn't grow up rich. We did what we could to make ends meet so we could afford to go up to the hill and ride every winter together.

Vans should kill the sk8 hi and only do the mids.
[close]
IMUO all skate shoes should be high tops and I was a fool that could've prevented a bunch of rolled ankles for not wearing them in the past.
[close]

If you’re into science and studies there’s no proof that high tops prevent ankle sprains or rolls. There’s even some studies that suggest a low top is better since you have better range of motion and the shoes usually weigh less. One benefit I can see with high tops is if the board were to hit you in the ankle area then it offers some added protection.
[close]
Well I found one paper that studied 20 basketball players (10 in lo's, 10 in hi's) for an undisclosed amount of time and even though there were 18 more injuries with low tops they conclude that it's not significant enough of a difference to come to any conclusion. Of course it isn't, the sample size was too small to come to any conclusion from the start. This is the kind of "science" publicly available on the subject... lol.

All I know is I still can't flick without the support of hi tops without pain because of rolling my ankle in lo tops..
[close]

We could definitely recruit shoes and gear users and get a much better sample size.  Anecdotally I feel less ankle pain when flicking if I wear a high top, and both of my sprains have been in low tops
[close]

I feel more stable with a supportive mid but don’t really like skating in high tops personally. I think there’s definitely some other contributing factors to ankle rolls like size, weight, bone/ligament strength, trick selection, spot or obstacle etc. Anyone in medical field or physical therapy care to share some knowledge?

Glad to hear first hand experience and that it’s improved for you personally, @bob george what shoes have you been skating in?
[close]
Blazer Mids. Highest "mid" I've ever seen. They used to make blazer chukkas, they were great and a legitimate mid - not sure why they stopped that. I won't skate another shoe unless the blazers don't exist - i've never had any other shoe last as long as these do too! Like, the shoe doesn't fall apart at all. Usually I stop skating them because the sole has gone a bit smooth, but the rest of the shoe is generally fine (worn, but not fucked).
[close]

Crazy to hear this after the only pair of blazer mids I’ve skated I burned through in two days.

That said i had the lounge mountain blazer chukkas and I really liked that shoe
[close]

yeah I used to rock blazers pretty much exclusively because they used to just never blow out, but I've noticed since a few years ago, probably due to the economic forces that render consumer products shitty everywhere, that they get thrashed pretty quickly. So that high price tag that comes with blazers ain't worth it for me anymore

In Australia you can buy blazers cheaper than most shoes pretty regularly. I've bought plenty of pairs for like $70-$90. Full price is $120 and that's less than most other options.

Sorry to hear of your blow out experiences. I have experienced nothing like that (aside from skating them into the ground over like months and months - but you expect them to be pretty fucked when you do that).

So if you aren't rich, you have to grind during the year if you want to spend the winter snowboarding. Credit to you for doing that but it just kind of solidifies the idea that you kinda need a lot of money if you want to snowboard regularly.

It's definitely not cheap, but somehow I think it might be cheaper than baseball. I was going to an Angels game last year and I decided to get a glove so maybe I could snag a foul ball and found out baseball gloves are anywhere from $100 on the cheap side to $400. Kept looking and found a non-temu baseball bat is $300-$400. Cleats are expensive. Everything is expensive and I don't remember it being like that when I was a kid.

Gotta wait for the powder to snowboard, gotta wait for the waves to surf. I just need some decent-ish flat ground that isn’t wet and I can have at least 30 minutes of fun on the wheelie board

snowskating is cooler than snowboarding. The snowskate will make snowboarding obsolete in a decade or so.

There are only tricks, dividing them arbitrarily into ‘legit’ or ‘circus’ or whatever is mainly based on how much you care what other people think of your skating.

I like a well executed dolphin/forward flip.
There, I said it.

I talked shit on them for years, probably just because you're supposed to hate them, then I saw a local kid do a massive one down a pretty big 3 block in town and it looked sick as fuck in person. Kinda changed my perspective.
I think lazer flips can look cool too depending on how/where it's done.

The only tricks I've ever seriously hated was that shit where kids would land tricks cross legged, and I also think body varials look like shit about 90% of the time. I can't think of a single example of a body varial I liked, but I'll still give it a 10% buffer for the sake of diplomacy.

Snow skating is mad corny, you don’t need a resort to snowboard hike parks and diys are the best part. Also a 8 hour lift ticket is equivalent to the price of 2 hours of bowling. thrift gear and go play in the snow it keeps your skate legs from getting stiff.

Well executed or cool looking dolphin flip is pretty rare. 9 times out of 10 they look gross. Darrell Stanton had some good ones. Brad Cromer did a nice Ollie body varial over a bump to bar.

The Slap board temporarily going down was a blessing in disguise. A part of me deep down hoped that it was done for.
This forum is clearly toxic and just a cheap hit of dopamine fostered in self-righteous anonymity.
I am aware that it's just a tabloid echo chamber for like-minded rejects but I can't help myself and it somehow helps with constipation.

The only reasons people think snowboarding is prohibitive is because they're in a resort mindset and have insecurity about their fits. That's fine, but so is the hill by your house and the clothes you have. This is about re-framing the act.

A year skateboarding for someone that's okay is as costly, if not more than snowboarding.

Used snowboard, bindings, boots: $600 | New snowboard, bindings, boots:  $800-2000.
Used outerwear: Hey, nice jeans with sweatpants underneath.

Six new decks a year with grip: $400-420. | Four pairs of shoes a year (new): ~200 (low end)

$620/yr. $2480/4yrs for skateboarding vs. $500-2000 over four years for snowboarding. I made those numbers up, but if any of you math capital heads want to roll on me with some fucking #s, feel free to waste your time and mine.

Growing up, I did exactly this. There was a hill by us I’d spend the weekends climbing to get practice. Plus, a season pass lift ticket was under $100, used gear wasn’t too bad and lasted years. I was blowing way more money on decks/shoes/gear/VHS growing up.

Snowboarding is rad.

The older I get the more I like it compared to skateboarding.

Easier on the body.

With some planning, you can make it more affordable. But the season, and being 3 hours away from a lift definitely makes it less convenient than skateboarding.

I hate people filming at the park and then go home to watch videos filmed by some chump at a park. Talk about being part of the problem.
