I can tell which way my board is facing just by reading my pink grip tape.  If it says "SHAKE JUNT" then I am skating the tail.

For me, if the giant ass on my hubba griptape is right side up, then I'm skating the tail

I try not to torque my hardware down too tight, I don't like stress cracks.
I tighten just enough for the bolt heads to sit flush and stop.
On occasion I'll have to re-tighten my hardware after a few weeks of skating a new deck, not always, but sometimes.
Gripping over the bolts is not an option for me.
Plus I just like seeing my bolts. Looking down at a gripped deck with no bolts would be like looking at a hand with no fingernails, it doesn't look clean it looks weird haha

I also only screw my axel bolts on until they're flush with the axel.
I hate it when the ends of the axel mushroom out from landing primo and keeping the bolt flush prevents that.
My wheels have a lot of play, I can shake my board back and forth and it's so rattly it sounds like a maraca, but I've never noticed any effect on my skating.

I keep getting fed old skater crap on Facebook, etc. and I’m pretty sure the nostalgia/old man getting back into skating market is bigger than new young skaters. I’m sure that’s keeping Powell afloat single-handedly.

I think about this a lot, the whole strengthen vs protection argument in relation to footwear. I wear high tops and will use aftermarket insoles if needed.

Technically, you are right. It would be more ideal to train and rehab my feet/ankles.

But realistically, I'm 32 with a wife, kid, and full time job. I already work out for almost 30 minutes a day, with some foot/leg/ankle stuff on a couple days.

I do not have the time to fix my shit and get my other things done. Something's gotta give somewhere, and I've just reconciled that I need to wear high tops and use insoles if necessary.

This "just strengthen your feet" argument also doesn't account for blunt impact protection. You just can't train your feet to absorb a primo landing. You can however wear a shoe that does that. So the ideal way to protect your feet is to strengthen them and wear supportive shoes.

As a very overweight individual, weak feet is not the only problem I am dealing with.

Also I am sure you don’t want to see fat guy in skinny jeans and slip-on Vans at the park. I will stick to big pants and big shoes.
