Are FP's really worth it? I've never been able to justify spending 40 quid on some insoles - just seems over the top
[close]

I prefer the flatter models. I've also never seen a study that proves arch support is actually necessary/helpful. I've only read studies that show the opposite; that our arches in the foot are made to cushion impact, and taking that away seems like it would only transfer more impact to more vital parts of the body (knees/hips/back). That's just my 14 years talking. As for the insoles, I'd say they're worth the money.

As someone who has had lots of pain due to the combination of having flat feet and skating, I can tell you that arch support helps a lot. I just wrote a paper and did a presentation for my physiology class on this topic. When you have flat feet, they don't act nearly as well as shock absorbers. This can lead to a lot of things, like plantar fasciitis and other painful inflamed tissues in the feet. It can also lead to permanent damage in the knees, hips, and spine. The first things that doctors recommend are supportive footwear (which skate shoes honestly are not) and rigid orthotic insoles.

If you take an old insole, cut to about 1/2 inch width and length equal to your arch.  You can gorilla glue it inside your shoe, where your arch would lay.  Put the insoles over that and voila, insta arch in any shoe for really no cost.  I had plantar fasciitis for a long time and ran plastic arch supports under my insoles.  Those broke, and I just started jerry rigging make shift supports.  Seems to work, no problems in my feet.

Any of you dudes give State a try yet? I was thinking about picking up the Elgin model, was curious on your experience with them.

I'd like to, but apparently they're only selling in the US right now.

State chaps: We would like to try them out in Europe too!  :-*

I have the State Mercer hightop and I can say its a very nice shoe. Good quality, soft and grippy. Haven't skated them yet (still killing my Lucas Pros) but they're next on the list.

Just had a look on note shop's website for a browse and they have some State shoes on there, was pretty surprised to see em this quick. Pretty sure note ship to EU, too. I wonder what other UK shops now have State..

Nice. Hopefully they'll be widely available in the future. Will likely try to order a pair next time I order some skate stuff.

Picked up a pair of State Hudsons and here is my feed back:
I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of the shoes.
The pic below is after about 3 hours of skating.
I got the canvas ones, put a little super glue on the laces and the stitching in front of the toe.
I did a bunch of flip tricks and the canvas on the toe showed no signs of tearing and hardly any damage.

The grip is great. They have tougher tread on the heel and toe areas where you would commonly drag.
The herringbone is nice and deep and grips really good, I had a pretty old board with jessup and felt no slipping. Id imaging they would be really grippy with a new board.

The insole is pretty thick and squishy, Really comfortable. It is also topped with a nice kinda furry like fabric, it feels really nice and keeps your sock from sliding around.
The Canvas has a rubber coating under it but is still pretty breathable.

They skated great right out of the box and took me about 10 mins to get used to.
I haven't had a shoe i liked this much in a while.
I highly recommend them, and will be getting a pair of the Salems next.

Yeah those look great. I almost bought a pair of the Salems in that color, which I think are just a hi-top version of the Hudson. I still might get a pair for my next shoe. Is the insole as comfortable as Lunarlon is? As much as I hate Nike, the Lunarlon insole in Converse is the most comfortable I've ever had.

Yeah for sure. I did that for awhile with some I pulled out of some Converse until they smelled like a mass grave. The only ones I have now are hyperfeel and they don't fit in anything else, but that's a different thing altogether. I more just meant that the only way to get something like lunarlon is to get lunarlon.

I wouldn't say they get floppy. First you have to get half size smaller size than your usual size, I'm 9 on everything and 8.5 is just fine.

The toe part gets more flexible/floppier, but the insole helps to keep it sturdy.
The heel is keeping it's shape. keep in mind the collar is way higher than other vulcs like janoskis, and the insole is like a spine that helps with sturdyness and cushion. I've rode already two pair, and will get more on sale ASAP. It was a bit hard to adapt the flick to the shell toe, but once done, it was perfect.
