Criterion Collection version of David Cronenberg's Videodrome. Stoked!
How much is this if you don't mind me asking? I got it through torrents, and it's a great ass movie...Debbie Harry presence and all just makes for a better picture. Did Scanners turn you onto him, aside his other blockbuster type stuff? If you've yet to peep Scanners do so. Watched it as a kid and made me an instant fan (thanks to my sci-fi dork dad)
I payed $29 for it at Barnes and Nobles. The Criterion Collection DVDs usually run you around anywhere from $39(for most blu-rays) to a $69 box set. It was on sale though so I got it a little cheaper. It's totally worth the money in my opinion; It comes with tons of super cool features on it which is a plus if your a cinema nerd. It's the unrated version, features two audio commentaries one with Cronenberg, and the other with James Woods and Debbie Harry. It features a short film from 2000 that Cronenberg did called
Camera, There is a half-hour documentary called
Forging the New Flesh which is all about the videodrome special effects/make up stuff. It has 7 minutes of 'Videodrome' programming (I haven't watched that yet but I'm guessing it is stuff you find on the videodrome channel if it existed.) Also probably the coolest thing is a roundtable discussion with David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, John Landis, and Mick Garris on horror films and the role of fear in cinema.
In regards to if I found him through
Scanners I just remember when I was around 12 years old I watched
The Fly and
Naked Lunch. I thought they were pretty cool even though I didn't know what was going on totally, I just thought they were rad because they were really bloody. As I got older and got more and more into cinema I started watching all of his films.
Scanners is a fun film though and probably features one of the most iconic scenes in horror/sci-fi film history when that dudes head blows up. My favorites from Cronenberg are probably
Crash(1996 film. not the overrated 2004 Sandra Bullock film),
Videodrome, and
Eastern Promises. It's pretty sick to see him evolve over the years from body horror genre director to full blown auteur. I'm really stoked for his new film coming out next year called
A Dangerous Method, It's about the rivalry between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud. It's got Viggo Mortensen, MIchael Fassbender, and Vincent Cassel should be good!
