dude dont you know, you gotta have a dslr to take good pictures.

here are a few from tonight, i?m pretty unsure if they are too dark, especially the panorama. its fine on the external monitor, but kinda too dark on my macbook. what do you guys say?

I had to use my dslr the other day and it's been so long that I had to relearn where all the controls are.

I think your pano looks nicer brightened, but the exposure is good on the main building (cathedral?), so I would mask that out, along with the top left of the frame and bring the curve up a bit.

thanks a lot for the tips, gonna play around a bit. this "picture looks different on different screens"-thing has been bothering me a lot in the last time. goddamnit.

I've been toying with the idea of owning one of those Ricoh joints or maybe a Sony NEX5. I don't know shit about photography and these are expensive gadgets and I certainly can't afford them now, but still, I like the idea.

Basically just looking for a high end point-and-shoot rig that can take pretty pictures with interchangeable lenses and a compact body.

Yeah, you photography dudes are probably rolling your eyes huh?

I said that I shoot with a Canon S90, that's smaller than either of those cameras.  I would love to own a Ricoh.  The files look like film.
The thing about that camera is that the sensor is part of the lens unit, meaning each lens has its own sensor, which brings up the cost on lenses.  I'd say it's worth it though.

Where is that bunny shrine deal Fongstarr? Looks really sick, be a nice little reason to go to Haight.

Tried a night shot from the window in my new place. Really starting to enjoy taking pictures now that I know a few basic things.

You know, now that I've looked into things a bit more, I think the Canon S90/95 is just what I'm looking for in a camera. Seems a lot more versatile (and less expensive).

I'm noticing that there's quite a market for these more upscale compacts.

^^^Hell yeah, do it!  I have over a dozen friends that I have let check out my camera for about two minutes who have then gone out and bought their own.  Many of them no longer use their dslr's for anything but professional work now.  The technology has finally accommodated the market for photographers looking for fully manual pocket sized digital cameras who don't want to drop $7,000 on an m9.  (Actually, I know a photographer who was looking for something to replace his aging m9 that decided to get the s95.)  I've made injet prints straight from the camera that are sharp at 9"x12", and sharp lightjet prints at 20"x30".

This just came out as well, but it's going for about twelve hundred right now...
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/fujifilmx100/

Still, the s95 is more than sufficient for most applications and costs a third of that.
