GH was until then still considered as a second range pro because of his web background but he's no joke and fully deserves the pro rank with such a memorable part.

this video has the perfect balance between artsy hipster things, self-mockery, and great skateboarding. It felt like a semi-homie / semi-branded video. Lots of tricks felt « spontaneous », like you don’t know what’s coming next. The post credit montage was cool too, kinda reminded me old skate videos. I’m a Jerry Hsu aficionado so maybe I’m biased…

loved Hsu obviously, but also Corey, Ryan and Arin. Maybe I’m saying that because I don’t watch his YouTube things on a regular basis, but GH is a great skateboarder. He knows he’s doing illegal shit, but who cares ? I’ve seen worst parts from respected pros…

Joa's part was basically bad. 4 or 5 good clips and the rest dry heave-level shit.

Zak's part was fucking awful. Practically unwatchable. I remember a decent trick or two, but the gear is unforgivable.

Max, half extremely good, half shit that should have been cut.

Akwasi fucking killed it. A+ shit. Wish he would stop doing the Mickey Mouse ears thing with the hair/hat.

Gabbe = vert button.

Jerry/Arin, fucking fantastic. Really phenomenal shit from both. One of Jerry's best parts ever, right up there with Bag and Gold. Bank to ledge/curb/bar god. Goat.

Ryan Lay, really good, but a touch long. Impressive, but a bit boring. If 25% had been cut it might be great.

Glick, very good. Casual. Ishod-esque. The toe-drag ender was a bummer.

All the filmmaking aspects, extremely good. A solid 1/5 of the runtime being a kind of fuckaround end section is a welcome '90s throwback.

Ultimately Jer' and Matt King are the MVPs.

I really enjoyed the vibe of this video. It makes me want to skate. Ryan Lay had my favorite part.

I've been thinking about this video a lot

A lot of ex-big pros, when they reach the third act of their career, start companies (usually board companies.) Often, they rely on their 'legend status' as something that will support the brand without them needing to add anything else, as if skateboarding owns them something simply because of their legacy.

This video really feels like Jerry trying to give *something* back to skating. For sure, this video is partly sci-fi trying to bump their sales (GH says they're not doing so well.) However, in that situation most companies today would just release a little 10 min promo edit. Jerry has voluntarily gone through the effort of assembling a cool team, scouted some really interesting filmmakers, and made a distinctive full length. People probably would of been fine with sci-fi remaining as a minimal soft goods brand, but it feels like he actually wanted to do something in skateboarding.

20 years ago making a full length like this would have been par for the course. But today, particularly when the industry is shrinking, a smaller company doing something like this really shows they're invested in putting back into skating (similar to limo's paymaster.)

This vid has its flaws, but overall it represents a change in attitude towards making a skateboard company compared to a lot of what's on offer today, where old-pros just independently reissue their old iconic graphics and expect people to buy it.

If I wanted to watch "high level" skating I'd watch the disorder video or some shit.
[close]

I think the idea is that creativity should make up for lack of talent. Something like crook-shuv-50 from a 2 stair to curb is neither skillful nor creative. It's just a dud of a trick, and there were a handful of these in the video.

I'm not gonna say there weren't tricks I didn't care for, just that it didn't really bother me. If it were entirely those tricks I would get it but there were also plenty of tricks I've never seen before that got me stoked (360 wallride, last trick).

I was even hyped on the mini ramp section with that Korn song, but hey we are all looking for different things out of a skate video.

I for one love this video. I’ve always been a sucker for the San Jose style since the tilt mode vids and this continues that tradition in a beautiful way. Super solid, stylish skating that doesn’t forget that skateboarding should be about having fun. Thanks Jerry!

I liked the video a great deal, but idk if I’d go so far as to say it’s video of the year. Maybe best full length? It’s better than the Hockey video, but not better than the Spitfire edit that just dropped.

Foot touch ender is blasphemous tbh. Felt like I was being trolled

Idk, his toe barely touched and it is such an awkward jarring trick that I think it gets a pass. It’s not even like the touch was the reason he rode away. It was more an incidental grazing.

Funny enough though, I could imagine Joa pause/slo-mo’ing it in one of his streams.. if not for being a teammate of course.  ;D

best artistic direction i've seen in a video in years, beautiful vibes

editing was so sharp and high effort

music was great, so many needle drops had me smiling

loved the self-referencing like lay's long 50 as a nod to his first sci-fi part or joa levelling up his blunt fakie manual flip, im sure im missing other

most importantly jerry saying "im almost done" and then hitting the most insane nollie bs flip and the going off at that spot with the helicopter b-roll... so so good

adored the credit and homie edit at the end thats the essence of a real and proper skate vid

This video has really put into perspective the divide between what people like about watching skating. I take back my comment about people being negatively biased. I think some of you just don’t give a shit about the artistry and expressive nature of skating and just want to watch people do really hard tricks on shit you’d never be able to skate. Nothing wrong with that, just two very distinct types of people with a few scattered in-between. That being said, if you didn’t enjoy this video we could never be friends and you probably have horrible taste in all other aspects of life.

There’s a zumiez nearby that I walk my dog by every morning/night (I live in a rich so-cal neighborhood). Last night they were playing this on the screen. I stopped to watch for a couple mins. Thousand gecs was playing in the store and the 18yo worker had a Daniel Johnston tote bag and markered, “fuck a male ego” on the side of his pants.

I bet you guys would have a lot to talk about together. Identical opinions between you and his high school friend group, even. Better taste than everyone else, no doubt.

If I were Ryan Lay, pushing myself for my part to the point where I pissed blood multiple times and felt that my boss was conveying "Look, this is your opportunity. You know… Don’t blow it." and then I saw my part in the context of this entire video, I'd start phoning it in a lot more and giving these parts to New Balance.
[close]
You would really rather his footage be edited like a new balance commercial than it was in this fun video? And you really think Jerry Hsu is telling him that if he doesn’t kill himself he’s blowing it, Chief style? He’s literally an endurance runner and pushes himself to the point of exhaustion for fun.

No, I liked the editing and definitely would prefer this over a NB edit. I'm saying that the effort he put into his part wasn't matched by most of the other parts in the video and if I were him, I'd shift my output accordingly. And I'm not making things up - that quote was from his Free Skate Mag interview from a few days ago where he talks about that being the general vibe of the filming missions. And Ryan follows it up with what you said - that he doesn't need Jerry to push him because he has strong internal motivation. But if Jerry was pushing that vibe for everyone and this is what resulted, then if I were Ryan, I'd rethink how I distribute my effort and footage among my sponsors.

Re watched this morning and I'm going to take an L on my previous comments. Because I'm an adult I'll admit I was wrong.

I think most of us expected the video to be exactly like something Jerry was in before except those weren't his companies. I'm pretty glad it wasn't like an Enjoi or Emerica video. I'm also glad it wasn't precisely like the old edits as that would get boring fast, but it was coherent enough that it's obvious Jerry has a brand/art vision. He also rightfully let his team pick their music even if some of it wasn't up to par for millenials then that's on us. Jerry/Arin's music was pretty good and I had no issues with Ryan or Corey's actually and the b roll was timed well to it.

I still didn't like every skater but let's not act like we like every skater in every video. I've definitely never re-watched or liked a Chris Robert's part and I didn't enjoy Castillo back in the day either. This is normal, not a fault of the video.

VOTY? Not for me, but I get why people would feel that way and can't argue with their logic anymore.

Only thing that would’ve made this better was b roll of Jerry smoking a popper 20 years ago.

Max and Gabee were my favourite parts.
I really liked arins clips in this too:)

I can’t really get behind zak anders part. 90% of his skating isn’t for me and it was the only song in the video I didn’t fuck with.

Joa’s Elliot Smith cover made me laugh so hard.

Very good video I love Sci-fi

I really liked Joe's part, didn't expect that. Hsu is an ode to ageing properly. I would have put Glick with Arin and Hsu for last part.
Call me nostalgic.
Great video in general.

Oh great, another round of pseudo-intellectual artsy hipster trash. Truly groundbreaking. Ryan on this team is like an NBA all-star forced to run drills with the Globetrotters.

I back this comment

The aesthetic is stale too, felt way too 2018 vibes
