now that netflix has purchased WB, posts in this thread are going to be fewer and far between.
Not necessarily true. Netflix has been itching to expand from out of the streaming game for awhile. They never wanted to get into sports, but then changed their minds pretty abruptly They never wanted to allow theatrical releases beyond Oscar qualifying runs, but they bent over for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia and others. A big part of the aquisition is for franchise IP (particularly with video games) which Netflix has struggled to develop on its own. Netflix wants this because they want to be able to expand like Disney has into parks, vacations, etc, but they realize streaming has its limits. (The would also love to get into the YouTube creator economy and start poaching those talents or developing their own)
Netflix has signaled it’s not going to stop WB releasing theatrical movies. In the short term that’s just honoring contracts. As we saw during Covid, movie directors and actors do not take kindly to having their work shoved onto streaming. That will be likely 2-3 years worth of commitments, but I don’t see why they’d stop there. The people they want to attract value the theatrical space and I couldn’t think of any business reason they’d want to antagonize them.
