Cartoons for adults
« on: November 24, 2025, 08:56:01 PM »
didnt see much about this when i searched. what do you all think about adult cartoons? im not talking about animated porn, but if thats your thing, no judgement.

Something like Creature Commandos had better character development than most contemporary TV shows or movies even. It it was very good. I really enjoyed it.

So what are some of yalls favorites?
new and old.
Boondocks is one that ranks pretty high.
I did see a lot of praise for Common Side Effects, which was great too.

About 15 years ago, I put a dvd pack with the full og "Robotech" series that was $15 back on the rack at Walmart and I regret that.

I work in the animation industry and we need more adult animated series.Unfortunately even on platforms(who now handle the animation series production) the greenlighted projects are mostly boring anticipation sci fi or non less boring stuff with sexual content and trash talk. It's a shame to reduce adult animation to that. There is however some good stuff like F for Family, South Park which is an institution.I remember that Korgoth Of Barbaria that was awesome and never made it beyond the pilot...I personally miss the John K era.He got MeTooewed and he ain't coming back from this. It's always been a struggle to pitch and sell adult oriented projects since cartoon remains for kids in people's mind.Japan is the leader for adult targeted productions. There're so many to discover.

I second more adult animation. Ive been wanting to give F is for Family a try.
South Park is a staple for sure.
Love the old Beavis and butthead, I tried the first couple episodes of the new stuff but meh. I'll give it another shot tho.
Rick and Morty is pretty good but I haven't seen the last couple seasons.
King of the Hill is top notch. The new season is solid as well.
Occasionally, If I'm feeling nostalgic, I'll throw on one of those 90's nickelodeon videos they have on YouTube.

Bojack, South Park, and midnight gospel are great

Loved Midnight Gospel so much but it just doesn't hit the same since Duncan Trussell went all in with the Rogansphere.
And I mean he went ALL in, like outspokenly defending Peter Theil all in.

Smiling Friends has taken up the reigns for me as far as adult animation goes. It gives me the same feeling that OG ATHF gave me and I’m happy to see it’s overtaking the popularity of Rick & Morty.

Seconded about Mightnight Gospel. The episode with his mom helped me work through my issues with my mom when I watched it.

Common side effects and scavengers reign are both great. Hope they both get second seasons, not sure if scavengers reign will tho.

Bojack is one of the most emotional shows I’ve ever watched and also has some incredible comedy bits in it.

Haven’t seen Invincible mentioned but I like it a lot, never read the comic but be aware there’s prob spoilers for it on the internet.

Also not sure if it counts, but Undone is a rotoscoped show and it’s damn good. Definitely utilizes being animated but has bob odenkirk in it. Super unique premise that deals with time travel and mental illness.

Common Side Effects is another I really enjoyed earlier this year. Season two is supposed to be in the works. The story's too good to not finish. Plus, having Mike Judge involved almost guarantees I'll be interested.

triplets of belleville, salad fingers, old gorillaz web shorts, tales from the tour bus, the spawn series, code monkeys, the clerks cartoon.
i remember reading about how much it cost to do that pan around the city for the final shot of the simpsons leaving NYC, and they weren't sure it was even going to work. i can see why computers took it out, but i do love some hand drawn animation.

I need to dig out my Tom Goes to the Mayor DVDs. They’re hardly animated but I enjoyed tf out that show.

Thanks to whoever mentioned The Life and Times of Tim on this messageboard ages ago. I still need to watch the second season of Ten Year Old Tom.

I've been on a Home Movies kick after discovering the entire series as one huge ass Youtube video (linked below):

The writing is fantastic, and it's cool to hear H. Jon Benjamin pre-Bob's Burgers. Forgot how funny some of the songs are too.

I think our country (USA) has an odd take on animation in general. It’s either treated as kids stuff or if it is meant for adults, it seems to purposely try to push shock limits. Animation is just another art form and medium that should be treated as such. It’s either can tell stories as well or better than live actors all depending on how it’s done. Obviously, Japan has realized and done this for quite some time. The US had done a great job of making kids cartoons with jokes that appeal to adults but that seems to be where they leave it. Anyways, some of my favorites:
Shows:
Scooby Doo
Loony Toons
Gatchaman
Macross
Silver Surfer
Movies:
Ghost in the Shell
Ninja Scroll
Spirited Away
Nausicaa
Blood
Metropolis

Nice call above on some of the same, especially The Maxx

Teenage Euthanasia is one that people probably missed. Fucking hilarious, borderline mean spirited, but characters usually do get their comeuppance ne it negative or positive. Check it out on the HBO app. Another one out of the Adult Swim camp is The Shivering Truth. Driven by non sequiturs from an unnamed narrator, the show is psychedelic in nature as you never know where the story will take you while you feel like you’re tripping on acid. One of my favorites.
Before you say the music sucked, have you considered shutting the fuck up?

Would cosign on alot of these
Venture Bros
Scavengers/Common Side Effects
Ten year old Tom
Smiling Friends
Etc

Would definitely throw Moral Orel in as one of my favorites, I didnt understand it when I was younger but as an adult its so good. Almost like a proto-bojack in terms of how theres some really heavy stuff thats made palatable by the animation style/humor.

I like most of Animals on HBO and it has a pretty good soundtrack as well.

Primal from Adult Swim
Disenchanted on Netflix isnt bad

Moral Orel was so fucking wild. I still can’t believe I watched that one at age 13. Remember the episode where Orel gets every woman pregnant?

Tarantula is one of my favorites.   It was from a brief period where TBS was dipping their toe in original content.   The creator Carson Mell (?) has a very Mike Judge-y sense of humor and I think he might have written on Silicon Valley at some point
