Weekend at Marc’s, I bet he was a great host:

This one :(

Can’t even imagine how his family and friends feel.

Globes Opinion made me depressed for years.

My favourite MJ part. This is so upsetting.
[close]

this is one of my favorite parts of all time.  everything about it. from the music to the clothes, to the spots, to the tricks. rest in peace marc.

This part kicked of a white shoe obsession that lasted a couple of years, and I wore this fit for a whole summer.
Now, we used to say we put on our tights to put on the world. So I don't think it tarnishes the image at all.

My personal favourite part of his.

Rest easy now

This part is an absolute masterpiece and is probably my first ever favorite part. I know a lot of people associate Built to Spill with Cairo, but I’ll always think of MJ anytime I hear them.

I had so much of this guy’s products in the mid 2000s - boards, shoes, clothes. Those Matix colored sweaters were untouchable back then.

MJ is true San Jose legend and this one hurts real bad. RIP to one of the greatest of all time.

he needs to hand it over to Louie B. or Jerry Hsu. It's only right. I wonder how Hsu or Biebel is taking it.

I saw someone on twitter posts a series of MJ clips apropos of nothing, and I immediately felt a pit in my stomach. I’d worried about this guy for years, but always expected he’d have the comeback of the century. Rushed here to see this thread… been stunned on my couch, watching his parts on my phone the past two hours.

It is so strange how grief for pro skateboarders who I’ve never even met cuts so deeply. I remember when Shane Cross died, even though I wasn’t all that much a fan of his skating, I was affected in a way that I did not expect. Dylan’s passing was the only one of the avalanche of 2016 celeb deaths that caused me to shed tears. Come to think of it, the only non-skater “famous person”’s death that caused me to cry was David Berman.

Losing Marc is going to take years to digest. Difficult to imagine someone who dedicated himself more wholly to his craft, who put more of himself into realizing a vision, who had such preposterous levels of talent combined with such (literally) maniacal drive. He was so obviously troubled for so long. At his peak, it seemed clear that he achieved such outrageous levels of greatness at severe personal cost.

So much to unpack. It’s so crazy to revisit the Seven Steps to Heaven part and remember that he used to be a Puleo-esque “underground secret” kind of figure. I don’t think any other viewing of a video part left me as reeling and dumbfounded as seeing his Yeah Right part at a premiere at Active Temecula in 2003. How many other figures are in the same pantheon? 5? 10? He left an oeuvre that is utterly immortal.

Rest in Peace

MJ danced on a skateboard. His skating had so much personality— it was inspiring to see as a kid and continues to be so today. We’re lucky to have all the video parts he gave us. RIP

This is heartbreaking! He was such a big part of what fascinated me with skateboarding, and the way he could make extremely technical tricks look smooth, fast, and flowing was really unique. I always hoped he would come back, be healthy and just have a legend status, where all bad feelings could heal.

I’m really devastated—R.I.P. you beautiful star

I am so sad to hear this. My favorite MJ periode is the time he skated for Maple. This is my favorite of his parts.

I used to watch it on a vhs getting home from school. I had a bootleged copy of it I bought in Germany, where you could buy a tape with several bootlegged skate videos on it. It brings back memories and it is a sad day.

One of the greatest skaters has left us. Sad for his family and son.

"Welcome to flavor country" lives on repeat in my head. This sucks. On the topic if fully flared the fullcab flip he does midline on the lil stair sets is probably the best executed fullcab flip ever. Noseblunt technique impeccable yet almost impossible to imitate. Such a bizarre looking dude on a skateboard in the best way. You can do tricks mj does but they'll never look the same. The sweater game was always magnificent.

The thing people are speculating. I hope that isnt the case. That being said dude always had a jaded sorta aura too him. Idk if he was a Hemingway kinda guy, but he definitely came off like a Hemingway kinda guy if ya feel me. Dude seemed to exist in a weird space between passion and pain. And that was before he dissappeared.

This ones rough.

One of the best to ever do it. I had to re read louie’s statement, he did not deserve the away days incedent.

Mj Blessed us all with so much. Thank you for everything Marc ❤️

I always wanted Lakai MJ-1s, even till this day.

What is the away days incident?

"Don't ever let anyone tell you that you aren't good enough. Be proud of who you are."

"I know where to find me, but they don't know where to find me."

He had the guts to be himself, to show his creativity and humour and dreams. Most people protect themselves by playing it safe, only letting other people see the things they are good at, or that are unlikely to provoke a critical response. The Louie obit said Marc wanted to be remembered for his skating, and he will be, but for better or worse he was also a truly inspiring person. Thank you Marc, for sharing some of the real you with a bunch of total strangers, and for helping me believe that that was what skateboarding was about.

My condolences to all his friends and family.
