I remember one of the first enjoi ads which had silly company names they were considering such as:

Spum
Talentless Egotistical Ninnies
Hairdiaper Cameltoe

Somebody has to have this ad. I think MJ was in it.

I usually don't go on a re-run of watching a person parts when they pass away cause it kind of bums me out but i just had to with MJ. Been on a MJ rabbit hole, fuck, timeless. There was no ugly duckling era, he was timeless across 3 decades. I watched the fully-flared documentary also, how Ty Evans put a rough cut out and everyone else had around 30 seconds of footage and MJ and 15 minutes of insane shit.

The man was a machine, you could tell he was expressing himself and battling demons when he would try a trick for 8 hours and finally succeed. I would never assume what was going on with him or what even happened but when you don't have skateboarding as an outlet, i could see it being destructive.

This one has rattled me.

Wow, this is a tough one.

You know, I think Marcs story is one a lot of people can relate too. He was larger then life to many of us 20 years ago or more and I'm not quite sure what the average age is on this forum but I'm sitting here a year away from 40.

Marc put his blood, sweat and tears into an industry that didn't necessarily put that back into him when it counted most, later in life. He had nothing to prove, he already did the thing.

Its a lot like moving up the corporate ladder in your 9 - 5. You can be the smartest, outgoing, strong willed, most down to earth employee with all the experience, skill, knowledge and qualifications for the next step in your career but you watch everyone else around you get those opportunities that don't necessarily qualify. Friends of friends is what it comes down too.

I think Marc watched what he helped create, evolve and promote go so far out of the realm of what he called skateboarding that it contributed to his loss of what he called his own identity. At no fault of his own, just corporate politics that often push the largest talents out.

It sucks.

I listening to Yo La Tengo Autumn Sweater while making pancakes this morning and ended up crying. I figured Marc liked that song because it reminded me of his Matix sweater. I texted my brother who doesn’t skate anymore but we watched the shit out of Man Down, Caswell autographed our VHS copy

The most vivid memory that comes to my mind is first time seeing his Yeah Right video part in the summer of 2003. Immediately I thought he was the best skater in the world. Nobody had tasteful tech tricks on lock with a style like him not to mention he could also skate bigger stuff.

I had to get a hold of all of his parts. Next I saw Seven Steps to Heaven and could not believe the stuff he was doing in 1996.

Hot Chocolate, Fully Flared and Pretty Sweet continued to impress. He has one of the best lines of work in terms of video parts out of anybody.

I never saw him skating. I think he only visited Finland once in 2001 during an Enjoi tour and I didn't understand anything about skating back then. There is an article about the tour in a Finnish skate mag. Pretty cool to see him skating local spots. Some of the footage ended up in his parts like the clip of him messing with the pink duck/pig statue in Man Down.

You could tell he loved skating and I wish he could have liven a longer life. Rest in peace.

I’ve felt that heavy lump in my throat since yesterday when I saw the post. Had to take a long walk away from my family. Marc was special. A heavy loss for skateboarding.

Just seeing this all now after being away from the internet the past couple of days. This is absolutely heartbreaking. His contributions to skateboarding will be forever admired. This news is really hard hitting. Much love to the skate community during this time.

RIP to one of the GOATS

Fully flared part blew me and my middle school friends brains. I would get emotional watching his part. Was a huge influence into getting into skating for me, my first real favourite skater.

Rest easy king, you'll live forever

I cant remember feeling this bad

Fantano was talking about how hard it would be for a working class musician to make it in a 2026 music industry. The same could be said for someone with Marc's beginnings vs 2026 skate industry. They don't make em like him no more.

just by being himself, he taught other kids that its important to question things, its important to read, its important to have taste & not take one's self so seriously.

Im so very sad about this news, about this part of his story. I dont want to know any more specifics. I do not consider him a celebrity but moreso a teacher, idol and imaginary friend. I have been very cynical in the way that I missing him and now ill miss him even more.

Holy god damn, one of my favorites. I was just thinking about him two days ago, if he would make a comeback, either with the Business thing or with another brand.

RIP Marc, you were one of the best

didn't see this video in this thread yet--i've always loved this part, of course Marc Johnson is as incredible as ever, but also seems like a special time for Enjoi as well and the song just works...dear god, what a fucking loss.

Probably Turned a lot of us onto Joy Division/New Order. Thank you Marc for all the good memories. RIP.

Yep! Him and that part that used Transmission (Raymond Molinar maybe I think). From there on it was all love. Gonna watch one of a few excellent Joy Division/New Order/Factory Records documentaries again tonight I think, in his honour. Thanks Marc. Rest easy.

RIP to one of the all-time greats. Horrible news to wake up to on IG.

He was the guy that made me realize plain white Ts look stylish and I copied his fits for a while in the 411 days.

I gotta say I really associate him with Bowie. Both very stylish, creative, incredibly productive.

I saw him once in Amsterdam, in some indoor skatepark. He was skating by himself and I respected him a lot for that. We did not want to bother him, just skated along...and watched. The fakie ollie he did over the hip that day is still stuck in my mind.

I hope he's having a dope session right now, with Phil Shao and all the others guys gone too soon....

my god he skated to a lot of bangers! I love how sonically cohesive they all are. There's a very evident aesthetic they share/form together. Just another one of the many things that made Marc's work so special! Thanks for making this

Very true - interesting that Miss You seems kinda like the outlier, but maybe more of the tone I would think he would go for, if that makes sense.   Maybe it made more sense for a looser project like Man Down

Maybe a month or two ago I was talking to a friend about skaters who pushed themselves to their very limits for a part, and that inevitably led me to the Final Flare doc/Epicly Later'd/other MJ interviews about Fully Flared. Even though that was clearly a pretty complicated period in his life, it's still pretty awe-inspiring to see somebody so tenacious to try as hard as they possibly could to do their best. O'Dell even asks him if it was worth it and he says "I don't know", which I thought was a very honest and sobering response. He always an interesting point of view outside of the usual scope of professional skateboarding and I always admired that.

I do hope with time passing he was able to look back and be proud of what an accomplished career and life he had. Truly one of the best to ever do it.

Crestfallen & choked up w/ emotion.
I was on the train when I learned of his passing & found myself in the awkward situation of having a cry in public.
He was unparalleled.
His style had no father: it was all technique, exquisitely rendered in liquid silk.
Ride In Power, MJ.
I celebrate you.
I sing your immortal legacy.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me… You think you got me?

Youtube's recommended a ton of MJ parts this morning when I logged in, its nice that a lot of people are watching his parts today and the algo is pushing me to a bunch of his parts
