Every once in while I’ll watch his Pretty Sweet part and can’t get over how perfect he landed tricks. Especially his  fakie 5-0 tre. Absolute  legend.

I've always wondered if the editors sped up that part a bit. He rides so fast in most of the clips.

He brought Class and grace to skateboarding, of of the most well dressed skaters ever. Just wished so hard all his yeah right kits.

Rip Marc Johnson. One of the best to do it.

I was trying to find  footage of him in 93 or 94 skating a petrol station. Think he was doing nollie 360 flips to manual in it. After only skating 3 years he was doing tricks that pros were doing. Crazy

Shed a tear yesterday. It's hard to watch someone who was absolutely one of the best at the one thing you loved and identified with as you were growing up and know they are gone too soon. Thinking of the first time I saw Yeah Eight at my best friend's house and how that was right when I was entering high school and all the skating, and friendship and moving on. Rip

This finally sunk in for me. Was re-reading the memorials in this thread at work and it hit me. Had a bit of a cry in the bathroom…

Many of you have said very kind words about someone you’ve never met and it got me thinking of what kind of legacy we leave behind. I hope people remember me a fraction of how fondly we are remembering Marc. Do better and be better for yourself, your loved ones, and the community you keep.

Keep it going skaters. When things get tough, we get tougher.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

I made a Spotify playlist with all the music from his solo parts that I could think of or look up, lemme know if I forgot one and I’ll happily add it

https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5ksfzoWTySI8J2Tq1HqOrH?si=srnmVEcqRPKnybhvZBFN8A&pi=WMs2-wUtTJi-a

I see She Wants Revenge is coming to my town in September but doesn’t look like they play “Us” these days based on setlists. That one would be heavy live now. Maybe they’ll work it in.
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.

Maybe a month or two ago I was talking to a friend about skaters who pushed themselves to their very limits for a part, and that inevitably led me to the Final Flare doc/Epicly Later'd/other MJ interviews about Fully Flared. Even though that was clearly a pretty complicated period in his life, it's still pretty awe-inspiring to see somebody so tenacious to try as hard as they possibly could to do their best. O'Dell even asks him if it was worth it and he says "I don't know", which I thought was a very honest and sobering response. He always an interesting point of view outside of the usual scope of professional skateboarding and I always admired that.

I do hope with time passing he was able to look back and be proud of what an accomplished career and life he had. Truly one of the best to ever do it.

It’s not often you get to see “what if my favorite skater put in everything he had into a part”.   It’s so often “I hope they have a full part at least”, but Marc never left you wanting more because he didn’t put the work in, it was because you knew you were seeing a singular talent and you couldn’t get enough

It’s probably best that his FF part capped a certain era of big budget skate video production.   I know it wasn’t for the sake of mental health of skaters, but more that industry finances and the way skateboarding consumes media changed

The most vivid memory that comes to my mind is first time seeing his Yeah Right video part in the summer of 2003. Immediately I thought he was the best skater in the world. Nobody had tasteful tech tricks on lock with a style like him not to mention he could also skate bigger stuff.

I had to get a hold of all of his parts. Next I saw Seven Steps to Heaven and could not believe the stuff he was doing in 1996.

Hot Chocolate, Fully Flared and Pretty Sweet continued to impress. He has one of the best lines of work in terms of video parts out of anybody.

I never saw him skating. I think he only visited Finland once in 2001 during an Enjoi tour and I didn't understand anything about skating back then. There is an article about the tour in a Finnish skate mag. Pretty cool to see him skating local spots. Some of the footage ended up in his parts like the clip of him messing with the pink duck/pig statue in Man Down.

You could tell he loved skating and I wish he could have liven a longer life. Rest in peace.

Yeah got to see him here at Turku at the enjoi demo.
It was so cool to see him, Jerry and Louie shredding the local indoor park. Couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw the Tilt Mode movie and Marc was messing with the statue 😅🥺

he and Arto is my alltime top2 and all his parts are so good 💔

(here is the pink statue, It's called posankka, like a pigduck)

Rest In Peace 🪽

I’ve had people that haven’t skated in years message me today, and had something to say about how much he meant to them, I think we are all feeling it, I’m meeting up with my G’s tonight and we are gonna skate, and I think that’s what he’d want is for everyone to go out and have some fun with their friends, condolences to everyone, especially his family, I’m gonna log off for a bit and read a book

It is impossible to put into words how shocking it was when the camera panned up in Yeah Right to reveal the flasher was MJ and he was on Chocolate. Impossible to get that kind of reveal now. I will never forget the excitement that created. Thank you Marc, RIP.

🙏

There was a time in my childhood where, if I wasn't out skating, I was watching Man Down. Consequently, that Stones song is probably the song I have listened to the most times in my life.

I recently went to an artist lecture with Tim Barber interviewing Jerry Hsu. Answering an audience member's question, Tim said about bodies of work, "It's harder to be authentic than it is to be [just] smart." Thinking about that in terms of MJ, that's my favorite thing about him. He was completely irreverent yet uncompromising. Even when it came to tricks. Sometimes tricks encourage us to compromise, to bring it back a notch and give up on what we ultimately want to do. He famously would not accept the offer. He would battle it until he could prove to himself that he really could conjure any trick that he could imagine.

I've often poked at his famous quote about being able to take any thought and turn it into reality "because that's just the way it is." I've always thought, yeah, that's just the way it is FOR YOU. Did he not even understand that he was probably the most talented person to ever step on a skateboard? Out of all the millions of people who have ever stepped on a skateboard? And maybe he didn't. It seems like he was maybe only ever comparing himself to his own potential, I obviously don't know.

It's crazy how many people I've seen, in pros' social media posts and friends' messages, saying how they were just thinking about him recently. People who had not heard about or seen him in years. I doubt he could have ever imagined how many people around the world just randomly thought about him.

I wish the world were more fit for people like him. He deserved it all.

Man, I was just thinking about him/watching old parts and stuff just a couple days ago

I took my senior photos with my board in that striped sweater

Very sad

Marc was an inspiration and felt like a distant friend rather than just some pro skater

That, and he was absolutely incredible on a board.

One of skating’s best cackalacks to be sure. He’s on the shortlist for best nollie tres. The story of his grift getting out to California is legendary. What a terrible loss.

Marc and I were talking about music on instagram messenger back in 2018. His favorite song from this album is definitely a unique choice but very on point and cool. It's unlike any other song on the album.

I got to see him back in like 98 at an A-Team demo outside of Chicago.  He wasn't really skating much during the demo.  Just fucking around a little on the miniramp mostly.  I remember being bummed because he was one of my favorties skaters, mainly through 411s.  My friends and I were leaving the demo and he was outside the skatepark by himself smoking a cig. We pulled up next to him and asked why he wasn't skating. He pulled up his pant leg to show off the gnarliest bruise from mid-foot all the way up to his calf. Black, blue, purple, green, yellow....all shades of the rainbow.  "Holy shit!?!? What the fuck did you do?" we asked. "Rolled it trying a 360 flip lipslide down a handrail" he told us. That response blew us away! My 15 year old brain couldn't fathom even attempting that down a rail...and then even trying to skate with an injury like that.  Marc was one of the best to ever step on a board! He was cool to me and my idiot friends when we talked to him and, almost 30 years later, is still a very cherished moment in my skate life. He will be missed...but will live on forever in his insane parts!!  RIP

This says a lot about him because he was obviously was not having a great day but still took the time to be nice to some kids when he didn't need to be.

RIP to a true legend and icon of skateboarding. Nobody even close in the technical + style category. His son is a sponsored skater, right? Hopefully he’s doing okay navigating everything after all of this…

Coincidentally, yesterday was also Dylan’s birthday. Maybe they’re skating together in whatever happens after all of this.

Marc was my favorite skater. I bought a print of his art that never arrived. He apologized for the lateness and gave me his phone number. We texted back and forth and he shared wisdom on life. Eventually it went radio silent. I’m crying today. What a beautiful person, the world isn’t meant for people like him. I hope he is in a less bullshit place.

I just put his modus operandi part on and burst into tears.  The man brought joy to me through skateboarding.  Huge loss
