Wherever you are now, may you be at peace, Marc.

The gasp I gasped when I read the news. Good lord. I doubt I'm alone in describing myself as an aged skater who's lacked the time/effort/willingness to follow the skate industry closely, but who's also maintained a preoccupation with the goings on of Marc Johnson. When I searched his name this morning, Google auto-filled to a query I'd made in February: "Marc Johnson skateboarder 2026". Just one middle-aged man looking for information on another middle-aged man that he's never met. It makes sense, though- for skaters of my ilk, he's as good as it gets. You'd be insane not to wonder about him.

Social media is flooded with in memorium posts about Marc, as is this archaic message board we call home. And so it should be, every corner of the great skate universe should, rightfully, acknowledge his passing. But what I think I'm struggling with is the lack of acknowledgement around how difficult, or strained, Marc's relationtionship with skateboarding was.

To his immense credit, Louie points to this in his Thrasher post, mentioning that Marc's career fell apart after his Away Days premiere (though Brinkle Juice took that as an opportunity to make it about himself and no credit is due there). Marc was godly, but he was also a flawed, sometimes problematic, human. These two things can be true at once.

What I think I'm getting at is that the routine "one of the best to ever do it" comments/posts feel shallow. You'd probably see the same thing written should something happen to your favourite Monster Energy pro (not hoping for that). Without question, Marc was one of the best to ever do it, but there was also a whole bunch of baggage. I understand the "place and time" argument for bringing that stuff forward, but it was a fundamental part of his place in skateboarding. It seems weird, or disingenuous, to completely ignore it. Whatever thing propelled him to become one of greatest ever street skaters is the same thing that propelled his more difficult behaviour. It seems absurd to separate the two.

Nonetheless, rest easy, Marc. What a loss for us all.

 - I was out with my gf today and couldn't keep my mind straight. I obviously did not know Marc, but he did make a major impact. Loved his humor. He seemed like a great dude and his talent was unbelievable ...

- Maybe the whole Lakai demise was the karma crailtap deserved all along. I was ALWAYS team Marc, he didn't owe crailtap shit and he was treated like absolute dogshit by them. Brinkler fan or not, in it's core he is still 100% right here (agreed that it shouldnt make it about him)

- How could the nine club do a tribute during the Ellington episode when Marc hadn't even passed yet? 100% sure they will do something, they were all still superclose with him, and Crob always kept speaking very very highly of him despite the crail beef. He did not care. Say what you want about that guy but he seems to have integrity, and he has had to deal with A LOT of heavy stuff  the past few years ...

- Can't believe it, the loss of Dylan, Shao, Keenan, Huf and Grosso were heavy for me... and this hit hard as hell as well.

It does feel wrong the greater populace isn't more interested. Marc is cumulatively the most progressive, influential, popular among the culture, and interesting skateboarder to have ever died thus far. Our Hemingway, maybe. And it would be less weird if I saw this on nightly news than if I didn't.

I was in SD staying with Tommy Budjanek for a week sometime in '96. He had an apartment where a bunch of the Maple team were. Tommy was on Human with Andy Mac and Gershon at the time. In the evening we'd go to the pool and chill. One night Chad Knight was there being a goof. He'd put his arms up and clasp his hands behind his head, yell "I'm a cobra!", then spit water out in a stream. Anyway, one morning I looked out the balcony and saw Dave Mayhew and Marc getting in a car to go skating. I was so excited to just see him from across a parking lot. Shit, I'm still excited about it. RIP.

That’s super low, even for them. Fuck anyone thinking they’re owed any type of immediate response from those who were or still were close with him leading up to his death.

Here's what I puked onto IG stories a few minutes after hearing the news. (I'm a cornball but it is honest):

Quote
I hope he had some idea what an impact he had on kids like me

I studied Marc in Fully Flared. I watched it until it was printed into my brain. hundreds and hundreds of times. Maybe thousands. it changed my life. His work radicalized me to follow my skateboard wherever it led, mostly to sitting on curbs with my friends late at night. it changed my life. it changed my life.

judging by the slap thread and Instagram now there are tens of thousands of kids like me with tears in their eyes right now. that anyone has that power through self expression and the act of dancing on a piece of wood is incredible and special. I just hope he knew.

I just can't believe it. rest in peace

I doubt very much that Mike Carrol was close with Marc before his death. He did everything to destroy the dude's career and now rides for the very same corporation that Marc "betrayed" him with. I don't like Mike Carrol very much anymore.

[insert post about drama]

[more drama]

I can't stress this enough. I do not want to hear this simplistic narrative right now (or ever really). I don't want hear about dramatic moment that we all viewed from afar a decade ago. And, I don't want to hear about how those who were near him should or should not be publicly grieving or processing this. None of these people need to make a display for us to prove anything to us.

MJ's impact on skateboarding was huge. His life was complex and placing a simplistic narrative on top of it or using this moment to point figures doesn't give him the respect he deserves.

Marc's impact on skateboarding was huge and the dude was a complex guy. His skateboarding was amazing, he openly discussed the industry in ways others weren't able to, and made skateboarding fun with his creativity. The struggles he faced throughout his career were complex and no single moment explains them.

MJ offered us something much more interesting than simple narratives, grievances, or drama. His interview with Jenkem wasn't just positive or negative, it was complex and that is why it resonated so deeply at the time: https.//www.jenkemmag.com/home/2013/07/16/the-marc-johnson-interview/ . His Epicly Later'd was deeply honest. It felt like a confession. His honest and complicated answer to discussing being pro was better than nearly any other skater has framed it. The deep burnout from the effort and sacrifice it took to give us what he did is particularly salient in this moment.

Dude let gave us a peek into his life and made our lives better for it, let's not use it to point fingers or push grievances.

3:10

Go make a thread specifically for negative/simplistic drama. This is to celebrate this fucking dude and the impact he made on all of us.

When routine bites hard and ambitions are low
And resentment rides high, but emotions won't grow
And we're changing our ways, taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold? You've turned away on your side
Is my timing that flawed? Our respect runs so dry
Yet there's still this appeal that we've kept through our lives
But love, love will tear us apart again

Love, love will tear us apart again

You cry out in your sleep, all my failings exposed
There's a taste in my mouth as desperation takes hold
Just that something so good, just can't function no more
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Love, love will tear us apart again
Then love, love will tear it apart again
Love, love will tear it apart again

Thats super sick that he influenced you that much. He truly was an artist. His parts are perfect and he always had the best songs. I remember first becoming aware of Marc through the A-team ads, w Gershon, Rodney and Daewon. Also those early enjoi ads are legendary. My homie came up to me at workthis morning and told me the news.i was super busy(I run a photo printing machines and we had just gotten a drop off), and I was like what? Who? Like I cldnt process it. Then I put on his fully flared part and almost cried while running the.machines. Im home now, just smoked and am.watching Marc's parts. Im trying to not cry now. Such incredible style on top of being so tech/ahead of his time. We lost an amazing one guys.

RIP to the legend Marc Johnson

I've got mixed feelings about the Mike Carroll interview. I can see the frustration of being stuck with a ton of MJ shoes you can't move. From MC's perspective, it sounds like the Adidas prospective had been discussed and it just had poor timing with the release of Away Days.

Honestly also feels like Adidas could have just held off and put out a commercial a month or so later, it's not like he even had a part. It's like a commercial within the video with 2 bank tricks.

didn't see this video in this thread yet--i've always loved this part, of course Marc Johnson is as incredible as ever, but also seems like a special time for Enjoi as well and the song just works...dear god, what a fucking loss.

If you hadn’t posted it I eventually would’ve.

This was the first video I ever saw. This Enjoi section is the last part, always thought that was a cool way to end that amazing video. If you love Tilt Mode and haven’t seen Jaded I can’t recommend it enough.

My first board was an Enjoi Mullen. Not long ago I found the print of the graphic, done by Marc of course. It’s time to go get it framed.

My dope local little shop in bumfuck Australia always had Enjoi. One of my first skate buddies had this dopest MJ board posted below. Marc dedicated it to either Chris Avery or Mark Whiteley, one of them. I love how meaningful and purposeful Marc’s approach was. If you go back, you will often find things that line up or make sense to Marc’s actions. Very thoughtful man.

My friend threw Roofies grip on this MJ board. The grip with weed leaves everywhere. We were 12. Wild stuff. Shit like that is burned into brain and just connected me more to skating that I just had to keep doing it.

I was so jealous of my friend’s MJ board. I wanted a Marc board, not this board with a monkey and shit on it! But hey, at least Marc did the graphic. Good enough for me in retrospect.

I found the MJ board on eBay years ago but didn't grab it. Still regret that. I do have a really old Enjoi MJ for the wall, the other one with the guitar. Classic Enjoi colours with a border.

Looking back on stuff like that shows how decent of a human Marc was, so much love for everyone else. Like someone else said, it all felt like we knew him. He’s one I never got to meet or see skate, but it feels like I did. His reach was that powerful.

I remember using my skateboard to get away from shit situations as a little kid, too. I’m so thankful that Marc would speak on those things later. I would always revisit interviews on him because he was so genuine.

About a year or two later at another friend’s house I saw Yeah Right for the first time just after it came out. Marc’s part popped up and I was already familiar with him from Jaded and from that board I wanted so badly. I think him and Koston were the only guys I knew at that point from that video. It was so sick to see him still skating those San Jose spots on Enjoi boards. Even better, seeing him skate some Australian spots was the cherry on top, that first line in Melbourne! Why does no one talk about that massive road gap bs flip? He’s going so fast. The guy was so smooth that his speed didn’t always translate, but he never skated slow. Incredible.

I loved Enjoi from 2002 through to Bag of Suck and beyond with Tilt Mode stuff. For a long time I didn’t know Marc was behind Enjoi. Those early graphics, ads, this Jaded enjoi section, it all meant so much and hooked me into skateboarding forever. He just understood what skateboarding could mean to us. I remember being so pumped for Bag Of Suck, hoping he’d at least have some tricks. I was so Enjoi focused I didn’t see Fully Flared til a little bit later, haha.

Going back to that Jaded Enjoi section… MJ’s stuff is incredible. Boosted nollie flip 1:43. Balanced bs 5-0 on a rounded kinked rail 1:46. Fs flip nosegrind perfectly balanced will always be insane 3:07. Long ass balanced fs shuv nosegrind 3:15. No one can touch that. And of course the ender. Sorry to end on just Marc’s skating because he was so much more than that.

Thanks for everything, MJ. Marc forever.

I’m hoping someone makes a tribute video with Goodbye Horses as the song

Last night I randomly decided to grab the guitar to learn & play goodbye horses, today I read that he’s gone. Never meet Marc but I love Marc, I’ll miss him.

I’ve been at a low myself for 1.5 years. It sucks seeing someone that I think succeeded in life but has this outcome. It’s not getting easier. I can’t believe he’s gone. His skateboarding was beautiful, he made it, living as a pro skater, and being a father.

Rest in peace Marc

If you can't handle me at my Marc Johnson, you don't deserve me at my Bobby Puleo.

can't believe one of the greatest skaters and influences of our generation has random nobodies expecting close friends and family to make public statements on social media on his death, before fully grieving and processing what happened.

Insane world we live in.

Instead, enjoy life. Go skate, and talk to your friends and family. Get off social media.
Being a slap pal is a zero accomplishment
