Well, like many people here, I haven't been around these parts since forever, but I felt I had to leave this little hommage somewhere.
That was from a project I did with a classical piano player in marseille, dating back to 2013.
I figured that could join the pile on the altar. RIP Marc Johnson.

Little show and tell, bought this deck when he was selling them on instagram, I think B&C was done or on the way out at the time and he was doing these small runs of decks

I like how he would do different top graphics on his Business and Company decks. I have the pig deck too but my top graphic has “young love” on it. I’ll have to check but I think it’s from an old DC comic.

I gotta say, what has happened in the wake of MJ's passing is pretty amazing. The comments sections on all his videos are filled with dudes who are normally sniping meanly at each other online, instead openly talking about their grief, sharing tears and heartbreak.

I LOVE the post above about what if these love bombs had been directed at Marc when he was alive. MJ was always very open about his life and emotional struggles. I feel like this outpouring of genuine emotion and love is the best possible tribute to what this dude stood for.

Maybe this moment will mark some kind of sea change in the way we treat people online - particularly pros - who are clearly struggling. I hope so.

Somebody bought an older TWS of mine with MJ on the cover and a pro spotlight so I scanned it. This was around the fully flared release. Some pages got clipped in the scanning process but here’s the link to interview:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1BLRLvT8wgVuZRe0MrlKB_HjHETuyxDpx/view?usp=sharing

He brings up going skating BEFORE school at 4am, then attending school, and skating afterwards.
MJ is dedication

I was lucky enough to meet marc when i moved to LA 13/14 years ago, I was helping Ty, Federico and roger while living on rogers couch. They were at the last 2-3 months of filming so the majority of the team were filming their enders. I mainly helped out federico as a second angle and he took me on a handful of sessions with marc. Mainly the Front nose nollie heel fakie on the concrete rails and some other tricks he wasnt able to land before the deadline. -- Funny enough feds ended up posting one of the clips, Marc was quite possibly the nicest dude, he was super grateful for me being there and helping out and being along for the battle.

At some point he hit me up to help out with a skit for monster children chocolate board collab, and honestly i was shocked and stoked he wanted me to do it. We had a ton of fun filming it with this old el camino he had gotten, and he was so fucking into it too. A week before he had gone to a big hollywood costume shop and got these hobbit pants that were out of lord of the rings for the "kids" who ended up being Stu Kirst, and our other homie from the skate park Ross. He and Chris Roberts obviously went full back 40 and had wigs and what not. You could tell how excited he was for the idea. Which going back to my emails about it was.

"Marc cruising around in an El Camino ute, dressed semi creepy with the candyman song as a soundtrack, handing decks out to kids. This Marc's idea and he'll no doubt make it super cool."

And honestly we just freestyled the whole shoot, he had a main idea he wanted to do but there was no script, we'd shoot a scene until we felt like we had something and then go on to the next and just pieced it together as we shot. I got to keep the board and I had him and chris sign it. Now it hangs over my computers next to his other board I got which was the feeling good the new mood therapy board.

I keep seeing all the instagram posts about him and started to think back about hanging out with him, and the last time i saw him was at a vape shop during middle of covid and I talked to him for a solid 45 mins just about life during covid, the industry, him wanting to do more with buisness and company but that other board companies were over paying and buying out boards from manufacturers at the time and then the whole shipping fiascos. He had asked me then to film more skits for business and company but i had just started a full time job and wasnt really available at the time which sucked because i fully wanted to.

And in seeing all the posts it made me kinda think back about growing up and skating and I didnt come to the realization till now about how influential from the start Marc Johnson was for me. My first hand me down board was a A-Team marc johnson board, Most of my favorite boards/shapes were marc johnson, in highschool for photography class i did a self portrait like his "Big guns" Tilt mode intro, and I had the MJ White shirt matix brown cords and beanie kit just like most people skating did at the time. Kinda blew my mind when i really thought about it and although I know he prolly woulda hated it I wish had said something about how much he help influence me growing up. I also wish I had shown him my big guns photo haha.

I hope wherever MJ is now he is at peace. I will forever hold that time skating with him and hang out as a really special time for me.

I don’t often post anywhere but the all of the positive vibrations of this thread (excluding the negatives) inspired me to share. Marc is one of my all time favorites as well. The news of his passing broke me, similar to when I learned of Grosso’s passing.

I’m a middle school art teacher in MA and run a skateboard club. On Friday, I spent the first 20 mins talking to the kids about MJ, his contribution to skateboarding, his struggles with substance abuse and depression, and encouraging them to access their support structures if they start feeling ways that could bring them harm. The group of 4th through 8th graders were fully engaged, and respected the moments of silence we held for MJ. After watching his fully flared part, we went skating. Earlier in the day I made them stickers, later this summer I’ll screen some shirts. (See below for images. And this is not promotion - I make shirts and stickers and give them away to support what I believe in.)

MJ will be missed forever, and in some small way I’ll do what I can to ensure his legacy stays gold.

I would have KILLED to have a teacher like you when I was a kid. You probably already know, but it bears repeating: teachers can be so formative in kids lives (either good OR bad) and the work you guys do is invaluable, especially these days when the arts and teaching in general are so undervalued. Please keep up the good work.

Marc was quite possibly the nicest dude, he was super grateful for me being there and helping out and being along for the battle.

Any unseen footage is magical to me. Thanks for sharing, those are some great memories to have. B&C’s timing was unfortunate, I wanted to support it as much as I could.

First five tricks in this are fucking beautiful. Power, style and grace. Marc seemed so in his element during these Tilt Mode days. I’ve always come back to footage like this to keep me going.

Globes Opinion made me depressed for years.

Wow that kickflip bs 5-0 is huge! Looks to be a 16 stair. Was this intended to be his Pretty Sweet ender?
Also interesting how his wheel starts in the groove. I wonder if that was intentional?

I can't really recall the last time that any news in the industry has impacted me on any sort of emotional level. This was different. This stirred a lot of feelings. When I grew up, Girl/Chocolate were kind of the gold standard. For me, they were the sort of team I felt most connected with, like those older brothers/cousins who I grew up in the 00s with. There was some level of down to earth-ness, but also that fun juvenile feeling of dicking around with your friends. It's somewhat hard to explain. But in the last four or five years, from time to time when I got caught up with life and didn't have time to skate, I found myself reminiscing about those times and revisiting the Girl/Chocolate videos that I grew up. I'd flip on one of them parts and spend time reminiscing, falling back into happier memories of moments that had long passed. The more I watched them, the more I really began to appreciate the level of talent he had. I'd always try to see if he had posted recently or if he was up to anything. The more I've thought about it, I don't think we really realized how lucky we were to have witnessed him during his career. Maybe now we're only starting to see how critical he was in the larger picture. I didn't know him personally or have any interaction, but it really felt like losing a friend that you hadn't seen in a few months. Someone you never had the chance to tell how much they meant to you.
