i'm in Los Angeles.  we don't have any great breweries (yet) in LA proper, but have lots of stuff nearby, obviously.  San Diego, central coast and Northern Cal have a shite load of good stuff.  also some great beer bars and bottle shops

i wish every brewery distributed everywhere.  tons of mid-west and east coast beers i want to try

You would have a ball in Ohio and Michigan alone. Fly into Cleveland and drive to Grand Rapids Michigan. I can think of 6-8 great breweries on that route. Have you ever shipped beer? I wouldn't mind trading.

For real! I'm in SF, and I miss all the midwest + east coast beers from when I lived back east. Not that we're not in Beer Paradise already, but still...

I'm down. What are the risks of sending beer through the mail/ups?

Go UPS and follow these instructions and you should be fine. These are instructions from a member of another forum I post on so all the pictures and directions belong to Sparkchaser.

I think there is another OT beer exchange in the works as well, so I decided to share with you my technique for shipping bottles of delicious, refreshing "root beer".

As you know, shipping alcohol via the USPS is verboten. I think this has more to do with the exchange of alcohol over state borders than "safety", but whatever. If the box never leaks then they won't know what's in it, will they? I suppose that is more a philosophical question anyway.

Anyhoo, let's begin, shall we?

You're going to need:

Your "root beer".
Plastic shopping bags. You will want one per bottle but two is more desirable. Paper bags works just as well and maybe a bit better. If you don't have bags, then use newspaper.
Scissors.
Newspaper. Lots of it..
Packing tape. Duct tape works too but don't use it to seal your box. Use packing tape for that.
Bubble wrap. I tend to save bubble wrap from stuff that comes to me in the mail.
Box to ship your "root beer". I recommend the USPS flat rate priority mail flat rate medium box.
Optional: Ziplock gallon sized bags.

The "root beer":

The materials:

The Process:

1. If you have the gallon-sized ziplock bags, stick one bottle into one, roll the bag around it forcing the air out, then zip it shut. Tape the bag going from top to bottom of the bottle.

2. Stick the bottle into a bag and wrap the bag around the bottle. Then tape it end over end instead of round the bottle.

When you are done, they should look like this:

3. If you are using newspaper instead of plastic (or paper) bags, roll the news paper around the bottle. Use multiple sheets. Five should be plenty.

4. Get your box. I don't have access to USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes at the moment so use your imagination.

5. Line the bottom of the box with bubble wrap. If you do not have bubble wrap, then start wadding up newspaper. Cover the bottom with tightly wadded newspaper. I have bubble wrap.

Edit: Recent USPS experience has shown that only using bubble wrap probably won't cut it, so line the bottom, sides and top with tightly wadded newspaper.

6. Wrap the bottle in bubble wrap. Normally I tape this up too but since I am going to be drinking at least one of these, I don't want to waste good bubble wrap.

7. Put the bottle in the box. The open areas stuff with packing peanuts, wadded newspaper, those air bags you get from amazon, bubble wrap, old underwear, whatever. The point is that you want to fill that void with something soft and that will absorb blows.

8. Enclose a note if you want. Watch out because your penmanship might get called into question later.

9. Tape up the box and address.

10. When you go to the post office, if you have the choice of using the self-service kiosk, DO IT. That way you won't have to verbally answer any questions.
If you do decide to use a counter, if they ask if there is anything liquid or fragile, say yes but say that it is packed very well and it should be fine as long as it doesn't fall out of a plane or get run over. Are you shipping alcohol? No ma'am, this is root beer. Interesting bit of trivia: some root beers are very regional and are almost impossible to find outside of their home state. Kinda like micro brew beers. Isn't that interesting?

11. BOOM. Done.

Perfect timing pancake man. HATE! and I are setting up a trade and I was just looking for shipping advice.

Had that Stone Espresso IRS and it was as good as I had hoped. The espresso wasn't too strong when it was cold and I liked how the flavored changed as it warmed up. I'd definitely get it again. Maybe not as a summer beer though.

i have some friends in Chicago i go visit when i can.  hoping on my next trip to do a side brewery road trip.  hit up the ones in Chicago and ones that are not too far away.  would love to make it to Founders too.  definitely want to go to Three Floyds, Revolution, Goose Island, Pipeworks..   i know there are others

had these yesterday (and other non pictured beers)

Wipeout is great but Mongo is even greater.  if you're going to have a wipeout you may as well go full Mongo

Oddly enough I don't think I had ever had this one from Stone before (maybe as a taster once).  it's really nice.  hoppy and smooth.  still prefer Wookey Jack or Uinta Dubhe for black IPA though

Revolution is awesome. Their beers and food are great. At the brew pub, they have a cocktail called the Scythe. It's whiskey based, but it's a great summer drink. I highly recommend it.

i've heard good things about them.  haven't seen any of their beers.  i don't think they bottle do they?  do they have a tasting room?  i've checked out their website and it doesn't seem like they do.  i have seen them on tap here and there but have yet to have any.

Eagle Rock Brewery makes some pretty good stuff, but nothing mindblowing.  i'm rooting for Golden Road but they have yet to make anything really great.  i hear Smog City is supposed to be really good.  thinking of checking out the grand opening next Saturday.  thanks for the tip though!

in other news, drinking this now.  trying to open up to sours but i really don't think they are going to be my thing

Floop, I would highly suggest Tilquin Gueze. It's much drier than some of the Flemish reds, which I find a tad too sweet/ fruity

Never really paid much attention as my grandfather always called it "near-beer" but I've been on a bit of a Corona kick since the weather got better. I want a two-tone Corona tank top more than anything in the whole world!

had this the other night. the only sierra nevada ive ever liked is the regular green one. this one unfortunately didnt change that. i feel like all of their different brews taste the same.

had this tonight and it was really good, super hoppy obviously and almost 11% but with no alcohol burn. pretty fruity but in a good way with no after taste.

finally got this Wookey Jack after reading good things about it here from floop. i really like it, i think i read that someone said the Stone Self Righteous was supposed to be a black IPA too but this Wookey tastes way better than the Stone Self i had (not to say i didnt like the Stone Self cause i did really like it). I will definitely buy this again.

edit: straight from Manila, Phillipines. my nightcap.

Anyone here fuck with Lagunitas stuff at all? It's rare that we get that kind of thing here in the UK but I came up on some of their IPA recently and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Haven't come across that at all, would definitely be interested to try it. On this note if anyone from the US wants to trade for any particular English/Scottish beers at all feel free to ask.
