Nice! How do the small Aces turn on that? I skate 33’s and 44’s but always wondered if that turn scales down to the smaller sizes well.
[close]

I haven’t skated any other Ace’s so I can’t speak to the comparison, but I’ve got no complaints.  Quick and responsive.  The narrow track really gives this setup a rad 70’s vibe.  Lots of fun!

Very cool, thanks! I’ve been thinking about cutting down some of my old decks to make tiny cruisers and grabbing some 00’s for them.

Looking forward to the pics if you decide to do this!

For sure!

When we had a lot of used decks, often the nose would be perfect with the tail all squared down from people just dragging it or whatever, but to turn it around as a cruiser works really well.  We would cut off the end of the nose so a semi squared off end that becomes the tail and shape the worn down old tail end into a rounded point or something would be perfect for cruiser setups and some of those guys even ended up skating them like that as their normal board.

Definitely a lot of repurposed normal boards can be turned into rad cruisers be it just the ends or the whole thing cut or shaped.

Nice, makes sense! Thanks for the tip!

Got two of these Real Donnelly 8.25 so I decided to make a cruiser out of one.
Film Trucks 5.5 Standards
Indy conical hard bushings
Oj super juice 55 mm
Old Bronson G3 bearings
Super fun setup..

The homie Jonesey gave me a stack of these black dips.
I gave two to others and I painted this one.

Gonna order some rails some risers and I'm thinking about these g slides. I'm just worried g slides will be dangerous in the bowl.
Definitely put my aces on it with the nice bearings.

I may order some sj? Ceramic bearings just to try them.

Every time I set this up a cruiser, I love it so much that I try to run it as a regular board. I end up hating it, retire it, and then come back to it as a cruiser and repeat. Trying to break the cycle with this one.

That wood stain looks really sick.
Maybe it's the camera angle, but that back truck left wheel looks a bit funky anglewise.

Its not a stain. The wood is slightly charred. Improves strength and makes it a bit more water resistant.
And its just the camera angle.

Is there a trick to cut the grip tape like that? It looks so clean how you left a consistent line.

I just picked up a blue Polar surf deck. I think I’m going to put 149s on it. I originally planned 159s but the back measured much thinner than I expected, around 8.18. Going to use it as a cruiser/transition set-up.

Cut a sheet of grip with enough to cover the tail and then flip them so the straight sides are where you want them. Cut the janky side of after you’ve scored the grip with a file. Boom

I just sand the shape of deck to grip, cut it with scissor little smaller and stick it on.

Depends what width wheels you are putting on it.

Big wide wheels could easily have 149s, Ace 44s, or even smaller trucks if you don't want to see wheels at all.  Especially if you had mini cubics or something similar, eg 40mm+ wide

Thinner wheels could have 159s with a bit of wheel showing at the back, eg up to 35mm wide.

Did you have some wheels in mind?

Haven’t decided wheels yet (open to suggestion). Probably big wide wheels. Skating to work on crusty streets. My cruisers are usually 60mm Ricta Cloud or OJ which definitely do the trick. Not tryna tre flip on this thing.

Try Bones Rough Riders. I have them on my cruiser right now.

If you go with them you could use 144s on this deck. I have 139s on my 8.5 inch cruiser and I get slight hot rod. I still have scars on my hand from kicking out my back wheel at 15 mph. In the city that could be death.

Come to think of it that tail tapers, so for wide wheels I would start with 139s.

Good to hear you are working again.

For the 8.75 surf if you’re going 60mm hot/super juice/ I’d go with ace 22. That would be just about perfectly flush in the back without the wheels sticking out and the front wouldn’t magic carpet too much (hot juice wheels are wiiide). If you go 55mm mini juice you could get away with an ace 33/44 or Indy 139/149 I think. Although I’m in the camp that prefers small trucks on cruisers, the sharp turns are phenomenal. Also it depends on the look you’re going for, imo 139 or bigger with 60mm hot juice looks too much like a monster truck or long board unless you have an 80’s style 10” deck.

On shaped boards like that, you don't base your trucks on the widest point (that's egg shit.)
Rather, you base them on the narrowest point (usually the back truck).
Reason is, if you hot-hod your back truck, then you're foot will hit the wheel while pushing, and you'll eat shit.
So, take the width at your rear truck, and that's your answer.
Prolly around 8.5 in your case...maybe less depending on the width of your wheels (which makes a huge difference.)

I have this deck and recently switched it over as my cruiser /filmer board because the wb was too short for my liking, for regular skating. 159’s are perfect for it IMO, that’s what I have on it. You’ll get a little bit of wheel sticking out in the back, but it’s not much.

Surf (the 8.75 one) is 8.5 front truck and 8.25 rear. I run 149 Indy, but the wheel wells are best suited for Ace 44s.

This will work based on juggy’s measurements, but you will have some hot rod in the back so make sure you push with your foot slightly away from the board.

If you have not bought wheels yet I highly recommend Rough Riders. I’ve never tried the OJs, but there is no way they are as fast. Bones RR has a large plastic core that definitely stops the same compression that you would get with OJs. Also, they are 80 duro not 78. Bones are also symmetrical so you can rotate. And they are Made in the US, which I like the idea of.

Either way, enjoy the commute.

Thanks for the info dude. Have not bought wheels yet. My other cruiser is 9.25” with 60mm wheels, so the idea of this one is slightly less big and clunky but still rolling over everything, pebbles and shitty roads. I’m looking at 55m mini Juice OJ, Bones Rough Riders per your recommendation, and Ricta Clouds maybe like 56mm. Hmmm
