Damn this was a let down but good to know because I was planning on getting an older Honda. I think my plan will be too get a Honda Rebel, get used to a bike and have it mastered (I already know its gonna take a long time before I get it down). Then move up to a Triumph Scrambler.

nothing wrong with getting an old honda.  old hondas are fucking awesome.  it's just if you are looking for something extremely reliable and/or it's your primary means of transpo then maybe not best option.

i'd like to learn how to work on bikes more but i really don't have a lot of free time.  i'm a pussy and take my bike to a shop, but i'm lucky to have several shops near my house, so it's not too much of a pain

Ive been thinking about getting a bike and motorcycle license for a few months and now I've decided to do it. I just dont know what bike to get... Im thinking yamaha xs 80-83 or something or a honda cb. Anyone got an advice?

I just want a super reliable bike that runs a long time without having to be worked on, just use that shit every day. I found a super rad 1972 CB500, but is a 72 reliable enough or should I get something newer?

unless you know how to work on bikes yourself, if you want something extremely reliable i wouldn't recommend getting a 40 year old bike
[close]

I agree,
old hondas are cheap, and that's what makes them appealing to a first time buyer (that and the fact that they are extremely easy to modify)
but get ready for a headache if you aren't mechanically inclined.

I realize that question made me seem super ignorant... Ive had dirtbikes and shit so I know how to turn a wrench, I could get help from my dad too if its something bigger, hes had bikes all his life.

I guess the real question is; is it worth it still, or should I look into something newer? I dont want to spend as much time in the garage as on the street with that thing. If not, anybody got tips? I dont want to spend too much on my first bike, plus I kinda just want it to be gritty looking.

Wanted to bring this back to the first page for the dudes contemplating taking the MSF course.

I just took the course over the weekend. It was pretty good and I believe it helps a lot for people that are new to bikes. I had never even sat on a motorcycle prior to the class, but the way it is set up it gets your comfortable with the bike pretty quick.

Just dont drop the bike at the end during the 4 evaluations.

raised my suspension a while back. I'll be taking the bike out of commission in a bit since riding season here is over until fall in order to change the seat and tank and do some much needed maintenance.

Im on the same boat and I'm planning to get my licences in August,  I'm into cafes or bobbers so you would recommend something less than 40 years?  Also around what price range would be good for a starter?

First bike:

My brother went and got his license a couple weeks ago, been thinking about doing the same.  He said he had to take it in some of the worse rain he has experienced.  He said there was a lot of standing water, even though the test regulations said no standing water.  One guy even slid out and people, including two old ladies failed because they would not take the turn at more than 20 mph or so.

Anyways, here are some bikes I have always thought were pretty sick:

that twin valve thumper is a hog! you're doing yourself a disservice with the street tires though, thats what the XTs were made for. Get that sucker out in some mud, the woods, sand dunes, tundra etc and get er wide open!

DUDE. I almost got her to kick over yesterday. Need to find a flywheel puller to get that fucking thing off and clean it up, reset the jet on the carburetor, and it should be ready to tear ass.

Cleaned the fuck out of the flywheel too, just need to pull it off and finish scrubbing her down. Possibly replace the magneto, we will see...
