album of the yearthe xx - xx
i honestly can't recommend this album, and this band, more highly. the album is amazing and knocks me on my ass every time i listen to it. i was lucky enough to see them live last month and for the entirety of the show i had shivers running down my spine. "pop" isn't a dirty word
========================================
honorable mentionsbat for lashes - two suns.
beautiful. just beautiful. there's really nothing else to say about it
social circkle - city shock
super fast 80's hardcore/garage rock record that is perfect from start to finish
animal collective - merriweather post pavilion
beach boys pet sounds for a new generation. drop acid.
crystal antlers - tentacles
prog/psych/garage/noise? probably the only way to explain it. listen, it's great.
cult ritual - self titled
experimental hardcore is probably the most apt title for it. not your average hardcore record, and is really a "complete album" rather than just being a bunch of songs playing one after the other.
deer tick - born on flag day
if kurt cobain made country music, this would be it. one of my favorite bands. saw them play earlier in the year and was blown away. awesome show, nice dudes, great music. they also just put out a new 4 song ep called 'more fuel for the fire' a couple days ago, make sure to grab that too.
dinosaur jr - farm
i shouldn't have to explain this to anybody. terrible cover art, great album
major lazer - guns don't kill people, lazers do
if you haven't seen the video for 'pon de floor' i suggest you go youtube that shit, stat.
doom - born like this
you are either a die hard fan, or absolutely hate the guy. i'm the former. he can do no wrong as far as i'm concerned.
nirvana - live at reading
shouldn't have to explain this either. does just what it says on the tin.
pissed jeans - king of jeans.
i'm not really sure how to describe this. it's kinda hardcore, but not. it's loud and sexy. saw them play this summer and my ears were bleeding. sooo loud
the horrors - primary colours
i'm not really sure how to describe this. post-post punk?
the maccabees - wall of arms.
britpop. more mature than their first record, but still really good. if you like british indie music then you'll like this
vivian girls - everything goes wrong
surf punk/60's pop. these chicks rule. my friend sam is dating the bass player. if you're a hipster you already love them.
