New Currens look dope. An era clone for sure, but it’s a little more mature looking if the upper is monochromatic. The vans jazz stripe is embarrassing as a grown skater. I like the way they hide it here. As someone said, this can definitely work with the last resort consumer. Not every shoe is made for everyone.


That being said, the tongue logo is terrible

I meant 50 years specifically for the era shoe but googled and it would be next year anyway. The difference it has over the slip on or authentic is it was the first actual skate shoe. Pretty much a staple in early bmx too.

I would guess taking the Era away is to create some want again in the market. When they bring it back after everyone has been missing it, they can celebrate 50 years or the shoe.

All speculation, but if true, that’s not a bad marketing idea

nobody is moving vans even at half price rn. you would be surprised at how difficult it is to move those nowadays.

a friend of mine that runs a shop in canada has mentioned that vans is absolutely tanking for him. they had a real nice run in canada, a good 10+ years of them being on top. they must have had a crazy marketing budget because i feel like every fairly decent skater was getting boxes from them.

for people that have to spend money on shoes, i feel like nb# is kinda taking over in canada. at first i just thought it was within my friend circle as 90% of us are nb# simps, but i have noticed a ton of people wearing them a lot more often over the past year or so.

I like that the eras have padding/ cushion near your heel the authentic is just canvas. So it bites into my Achilles.

I get same problem with Achilles rubbing. Eras look less clown shoey in bigger sizes compared to authentics too. I can also heelflip without my anklebone hitting griptape which is nice. Then lastly authentics look just like what my mum and grandma used to wear, but then of course this is what every young person is currently dealing with with most vans.

I used to be a part of one (well, at least one friend and I), due to the Achilles issue that Murge & Mean Salto mentioned. But I tried some Skate Authentics in a good colorway that wasn’t to be resisted and worked my way through it. I’m sure like with any style of shoe, some production runs feel slightly more or less comfortable based on materials and pattern used, sewing, etc…

I only fuck with Eras because with the padding around the opening I can slip them on and off without having to untie/retie the shoes. Also no heel slipping with that padded collar. Fucked up they got rid of them, but you can currently still get Customs Eras. Maybe I should order another pair before they disappear from there too.

As others have said, even just that thin strip of padding round the collar means my foot was way more protected in the Era than in the Authentic and the Era kept my foot in the shoe - I do laces right up tight in any shoes I wear too.

The Authentic Pro shoe had a really bad heel slip problem too, so that didn't help things at all, but I heard they fixed it with the Authentic Skate version, although I haven't tried any on to see if that is true.

One thing I did end up doing was adding another lace hole above the existing ones in the Authentic Pro so it would actually stay on my foot, but other than that, the old basic / Classic Authentics were only ever just going out shoes, all canvas and lasted two sessions at most if I tried to skate them normally.

Any Era shoe I never really needed to do anything with besides put them on and they worked, but I guess it does come down to finding a shoe that fits my foot, more so than trying to make something work just because I like the look of the shoe.

I feel like in the early 00s or whenever I made my decision on Era v Authentic there was no white Era colorway, so I went with the Authentic

Ha yeah the Authentic really did (maybe still does) have the most colourways of any shoe.

We used to have about fifteen options at one point at my old workplace, but I really can't recall everything.

White / White
Black / White
Black / Black
Then Red, Navy, Charcoal / Grey, Green, Purple, Mid blue, Pink, Maroon, Beige, Light Blue, Orange, Yellow, as well as all the other versions or weird colours that they had other names for like Moss, Dusk, etc.

Can't help but smile when thinking about all those, as well as from a quick google search Authentic colourways.

They came back and have been dropping maybe two colorways per year. Look up, "Chukka VCU" and there should be four colorways: white/white, grey/white, dark-red/black, and brown/black.

If you're talking about the lows, you probably have to buy them directly from Vans. I haven't seen them on any shops' sites.
