The Gass shoe looks kinda like they took cues from The Staple, which was a Reebok knock off (that I loved), and found a few other small Rod Laver era design cues to add on. It's pretty non offensive coming from a company that has a legit Dunk ripoff silhouette that they cannot avoid butchering.

I don't think it looks anything like the Staple.

I just got a pair and have the same experience.  I can barely get them on.  Hoping they loosen up.

lakai q3 2023 lookbook is up - new griffin gass shoe is kinda boring but might be a reasonable choice for those of us not wanting to be wearing a giant flare logo on our feet, navy/black atlantics look great as well. meanwhile the new telford hi colorway is absolutely heinous and i hope it doesn't actually make it to market because i'm not sure there's enough clearance shelf space on the planet to hold it

I do not fuck with lakai at all, never have, the logo was always off putting to me. but that trudger model in all brown is sick, might actually a pair and rip them logos off.

I honestly forget girl still has a team. They really should just fold lakai already cause having all their new guys on lakai makes it so you only see girl boards in crailtap stuff, where as most the new chocolate dudes are one major shoe brands so you them more often. Honestly I love what lakai has added to the culture but they should fold the company and put the Money theyre wasting back into the board companies.

Think it's prob just old tennis shoes in general more than the 550 specifically. (Not seeing too much similarity that's not also on other shoes). Wondering if all those extra holes at the top are indication it has problem with heel slip

The 550 is very hot right now and the leather across the toes is more or less exactly the same, and I've not seen that on any other models, along with that side detailing and even the white/green colourway is the same as the first Aime Leon Dore 550 shoe.

Not saying it's a complete copy, it's like mellowed out version. Almost merging the details of a 550 and Nike Court Vintage.

I feel like Manchild lives up to his name too much to give him a pro model. Based on stories and videos, it seems like you put a beer or two into him and he becomes insufferable which might make them less excited about putting him front and center with a pro model.

This is 100% the original Staple.

The URL says Staple OG which I thought Lakai slightly tweaked and re-released sometime in the early 2010s after they did the similar slimmer version. That photo seems to be from Jeff Mikut's personal work samples and he didn't design the original, but IIRC did design the later iteration. I'm still fried for making the comparison originally.

Shoe companies tend not to show things off until they decide to even if you can see the shoe prominently on people’s feet.   

I don’t think he dislikes the shoe, but it is a re-release and he probably likes skating his current model better.   It’s not like Arto never skating his eS model
