Judgement would be reasonable in this scenario.
Just chillers - the fact that I’ll hold onto these is part of the logic for sure. Blowing through them would be insane.

I wear them to work most days, since the office got more casual it became way more acceptable to wear sneakers…these do dress up pretty well (or maybe I think they do based off the fact they were expensive)

Honestly compared to some other nicer shoes I have they feel a little meh. The other leather/suede is nice but the inside is a pretty cheap terry (vs leather or otherwise). I’m sure the rose anvil YouTube guy would slaughter them for quality.

Bonus though. the gum sole isn’t falling off in chunks like they did on the air walks initially.

What if I said I got the white and tan ones. Got the white at a discount…but paid full pop on tan.

I’m a nostalgia freak.

Did anyone on SLAP ever end up getting those Kenzo Dome shoes (Jason Lee Airwalks)?
[close]

Hah I’m not sure anyone would admit paying that much for them

@Mosritemike  I’m not here to judge- I’m just curious. Do you like how they fit/feel? Did you end up skating them or are they just chillers?
[close]

For the record, I’m not judging either.   I would just have a hard time actually wearing them and not keeping them in a glass case

Interesting quote “shoe companies are just doing what riders want to make the, happy, not what will sell”.  Convo naturally segues to Blodney shoe

I didn’t think I’d pay attention to it, but the guys were very knowledgeable and I appreciated the candor

Interesting to hear from actual shop owners that Nike does treat them well
[close]

I haven’t listened to the podcasts yet but I know this is the show by the guy who used to run DOA and has been somewhat involved with the skate industry for a while without relying on it for his livelihood so doesn’t need to “play nice” for lack of a better term. I’m glad to hear it’s engaging. I’m skeptical of skate podcasts so cool to hear this is good.

@Mosritemike Sorry that my comment did just come off like a jerk comment.

All good my dude - i actually didn’t know what I was doing wrong - so happy to correct. If theres one thing I’m qualified to talk about it’s shoes - so good to do it more effectively

Glad you guys enjoyed the pod, being a buyer for 20+ years and a shoe nerd I see a lot of mis steps from brands. I will say that vans is lowering the prices on all skate classic carry overs starting soon. Between $5-10 at retail.
Hopefully we don’t lose our adidas account.

One thing I absolutely appreciated was the photos put in to show what you were talking about.   Plenty of nice punchlines slid in as well

new balance grey colorway of the lukoda ogs dropping next Saturday. it's a collab w rave skateboards and idk if it's a Europe-only or international release
[close]

Those are so sweet. Can confirm that those and skatedeluxe are both euro only release this weekend, cash only US drops. Sucks, really dig those lukodas and they haven't put any out since the butters almost a year ago.
[close]

ok so who on here can proxy these for me

I second this. Unless they're over 110, which they probably will be, even before overseas shipping. DC has been off their rocker lately with the prices. Between the 140 dollar shanahan pro shoe and the hybrid thing they released being 250

It was interesting to hear from 2 local shops that Vans is their worst selling brand, which shocked me. Apparently with the recent price increase kids would rather buy other brands and tend to buy Vans only when on sale. Most of their Vans are sold via their webstore usually when a shoe is a limited release (Nick Michel colors, for example).

Apparently Last Resort is selling really, really poorly as well. One shop is think of cancelling their account because they just sit there.

That don’t sound too shocking all the last resorts I see the people skating them and ask how they are it’s more or less they are so good but they tear in 2  weeks. Or they’re not that good but Pontus blah blah blah or something to the effect of that or a combo of those statements.   Just a matter of time kids realize the “ cool” ain’t worth the poor quality.

I see more skateboarders wearing emerica than vans. Moms and dads that are “hip”wear vans. It’s the Americana suburb shoe. Like chuck Taylor’s used to be.

Also NB and Nike and adidas are what I see kids wear the most.

Remember earlier this year the current van's CEO said they lost their edge, but completely ignored his own efforts to intentionally sand off the edges of the brand. Mall stores, pop culture collabs. Eleminating warp tour, and contest series. I totally agree with Vans being a mom brand. Every shoe store at the mall has vans including the vans store.

I do see more core brands lately. My theory is that kids have to be more price-conscious.

I agree on Vans being a suburban shoe, but want to add that they have a few ubiquitous models that are like a NB 574, Jordan 1, Air Max, Saucony Jazz, etc. that literally anyone and everyone wears. That doesn't mean they aren't cringe for their collabs, but this isn't exactly new news. Even in high school 20 years ago almost every cohort was wearing either Authentics, Old Skools, etc. I remember when the song "... I got Vans on but they look like sneakers" by The Pack came out in 2007 you were seeing them everywhere and that was over 15 years ago.

The Vans stores make no sense to me. They don't get to choose what they carry and often have that weird skate section.

I haven't listened yet to see what the DOA podcast says about Vans, but I wonder how much Vans's struggles outside of skating are trickling down to how the skate division is being ran right now. @LebowskisRug is right that Vans models are a staple shoe and have been, but recent shifts in the market have been dramatic and drastically different from Vans. Hoka One One and to a lesser extent brands like Merrell, On, and Brooks have exploded in popularity, which Nike, Adidas, Asics, New Balance, etc. all already have similarly super athletic, very thick / bulky soled shoes to roll with that changing market.

Half the reason I'm a faithful Vans customer is that I mostly buy same core models (Half-Cabs, Old Skools or Sk8-Highs) and they're generally consistent. Some variation of those shoes will always be around and I'll probably never struggle to find them if I need new shoes. I know how they'll skate and I know they'll work. The other models don't really interest me, and frankly I think it's weird that they're trying to cash in on techy 2000's nostalgia.

Never been in one but I'm thinking maybe a vans store makes sense as far as they have 300 shoes and a skate shop is only going to put 12 on the wall.

Think odd future really boosted vans around that time too. Did the rest of the world have those horrible cheap slip on trend (I think called Raben). It was like the whole country for a year wore these dogshit $20 shoes but then just swapped to vans. Ill maybe always love classic vans but I can see why many people wouldn't want to wear shit their parents and teachers do.

We should almost give this podcast its own thread

I would have liked to hear more about Vans pro models other than the Lizzie being a bomb.   Curious about the Walkers, Rowan’s, etc

Also interesting to hear the Foys are the most popular pro NB.

I'm similar, but only because the Rowan has been a consistent staple in the lineup for the last handful of years. Besides the classic Vans, the Rowan is one of the models I see the most in the wild. Plus, they're dropping the Rowan 2 cupsole, so I'm hoping they keep his shoe around for a while.

Purely for reliability reasons, I'll keep buying em as long as they make em.
Wow sorry, didn't realise I was dealing with a sick cunt here

I mean ask a shop owner how many of the Zahba they've sold. I know for a fact that our local still has some of the Kader Sylla Era's left. Shoe came out in 2019 and Kader left Vans in 2020. I appreciate that you have something that works well for you but for myself I can't do it anymore. My knees and feet are too screwed up after wearing Vans.

The reason Vans stores exist are to sell to the everyday consumer. The dream is no longer to be the shoe that everyone is wearing, but to be the brand that people buy everything from (shirts, jeans, socks, hats, ect). They realize they have to maintain some form of a skate team to still have credentials within the community, so they haven't gutted their roster, but they have lost a lot of pro's and I think they're going to lose more within the next few years.

What pros are you thinking of besides Reynolds and Tony Hawk? Dollin and Dill too I guess but how much have they done lately as pros? They have 42 people on their team list on their site (43 if you include Grosso) and that likely doesn't include all the pro flow / photo incentive only people, contest only people, or the young people they're flowing and bringing up to join the team. It will work because it shouldn't. Altho people will be at odds watching old Rowley footage with his slim pants/XLT combo.

those shoes trod a fine line imho; I wore em
with dickies and they weren’t out of place, bastien wore them with baggies and they also looked fine. I just don’t think vans will be able drop a 1:1 reissue without somehow screwing it up (they won’t be vegan so that’s already the first mistake)

I believe they have 6 different colors slated of the xlt, I can see someone being nostalgic and buying 1 or 2 but having legs beyond that is a mystery.
Maybe they think it will be like the nu skool and reside in that puffy world, mainstream culture is weird. The things they glom onto aren’t based on nostalgia as much as it is a rapper or influencer wearing it.
I wasn’t an xlt fan then and the samples I saw looked legit and good. But it’s it gonna be as big as they hope. Make a few, don’t bank on them going big.

Fair. The reason I brought that up is because I feel like a lot of Vans criticism comes from their one off decisions or outlier models. Which is fair but considering the brand as a whole I think there are a lot of people with the same buying philosophy as me, who will be wearing Old Skools and Half-Cabs many years from now.

that said I bought some Blazer Mids yesterday. Let's see how it goes.
