Why anybody willingly would buy Vans beats me.

That's a pretty narrow minded take. Genuinely curious, what shoes work for you? Maybe they are something that I haven't tried yet and might work well for me as well. But different feet and different styles of skating pair up better with certain types of shoes.

I just willingly bought a pair of Vans Rowleys because after spending the last year skating Dunks, nearly every NB#, and a few Adidas shoes (a lot of wasted money), I put on a pair of Rowleys that I only skated for a couple weeks last year and my skating improved.

Vans make my feet a little sore but what I found with other shoes that are a little more comfortable is that I don't have the grip, flick, and connection to my board that I do in Vans. While my feet hurt a little more in Vans, my body hurts more in other shoes from slamming and my progression slows due to lack of confidence in board control.

Sounds like I am writing a Vans commercial (while wearing Dunks, haha) but I totally get why people buy Vans. Plus, Vans contributes more to skateboarding than any other shoe brand by far.

he skates new balances because no other shoes on the market can protect his feet from the earth shattering impact of a slappy noseslide at a marble plaza

Vans used to work for ne quite fine but when they switched from "pro" to "skate" they killed then for me. Fit changed too dramatically for me and couldn't skate them anymore. Also when they were pros price was on the lower side, as long with durability but it was a fair trade for me since it was a comfy and cheap shoe. Now price went up in a way that doesn't make sense to me considering that they are not comfy for me anymore.
Adidas served me well in pretty much ally whit models but here they're quite expensive.
After many years of skating my feet are not what they used to be meaning that I'm sore quite easily, for that 808 worked the best but didn't like the look. 933 checks all the boxes for me.
Is nothing new that skateboarding takes a toll in you, same as ignoring dipshits like roba. You have to deal with both, soreness and dipshits, the best way you can.

Vans definitely going through something right now but the classics are the classics for a reason. They are always good.

I appreciate the response. I am 52 I skate a lot and still like to jump a little bit as well as skate transition. When Vans had the Pro shoes they were absolutely horrible for me. The increased stability of the SKATE Vans just work better for me. I tried the 933 Grey Days and they hurt me feet and the heel slip was terrible, although it did improve a bit after a little while. They were a little tight in the toes so sizing down was not an option. Dunks fit my feet well and are comfortable but the only thing that works well in Dunks for me is the flick for kickflips. Everything else just feels off.

I just got some Blazer Mids and a pair of the Adidas Puig Indoor shoes that I put my Dunk insoles in to try. The Puig Indoor is a vulc but actually has a foam midsole. Curious to see how that works although given how light the shoes are, I will probably wear a hole through the sole before the upper. I also have a leather pair of NB# 600s to try. The suede version was okay but stretched out way too much so that the laces were starting to get all choked out.

I have never had madness with boards, trucks, etc.. but the shoe madness is real!

The vans “skate” line definitely improved the old skools over the pros. I agree with the grip, flick and overall skating “skills” I have in vans over others and it’s worth the soreness. However I switch my insoles and that’s really helped get the best of both worlds.

In new shoes these Melbek by Globes are peaking my interest. Reminds me of those Adidas gazelles or Nike bruin vibes

i don't understand why anybody would buy a vans hiking shoe that is just a vibram sole haphazardly slapped on a half cab over a salomon or la sportiva or something thats actually cohesively designed for it. Same thing when Lakai would make runner style chillers. Why would anyone buy those over nike, adidas, hoka, brooks etc...

some people might not want to wear nike/adidas because of the oversaturation of those in the shoe market while also not wanting to associate with these other yuppie ass brands like hoka/on/brooks/salomon etc etc

i know it might sound crazy in this echo chamber of a thread but there are people that want to look at least a tiny bit original and a pair of lakai chillers is just that, however ugly and unnecessary they might be in your view.

i saw a dude in a bangin fit wearing etnies lo-cut 2s recently, if he had some airmaxes on i wouldn't give a fuck about it but them shoes tied it together so nice

if people really wanna let everyone know that they skate and are so unique by wearing less comfortable, uglier, worse quality shoes then by all means. maybe there is a market for it after all. regardless vans slapping a vibram sole on a half cab is low effort garbage.

It's not about "letting people know that I skate". It's about not wanting to wear the same shoes as my 57 year old neighbor who doesn't take off his bike helmet when he's at the grocery store.

Sure but there are a lot of shoes which achieve that. If that’s the logic behind wearing bizzare vans hybrids then idk what to say. I’m not really trying to compete with regular people going about their day at the grocery store. That seems kind of weird to me personally but maybe it’s because I’m not that close to 57.

To be clear, I was just shitposting and not actually defending that particular Vans shoe. The more general point is that I'm not really interested in wearing what literally 90% of people around me wear, even if it might be a smidge more comfortable.

As a regular Vans purchaser, I’ll bite.

I’ll call a spade a spade and admit Vans has been putting out some dogshit designs lately. That being said, their Skate line is regularly the only shoe that doesn’t hurt my oddly-shaped feet just standing in them.

I’m skinny, so don’t need much support, and I’m not getting paid to skateboard, so no reason to jump down anything treacherous. Vans feel good, perform well, and are reliable.

I don’t really wear them off the board, but I rarely if ever look down while skating and feel wack with them on. They work for me.

If there was good colorways of the Rowan 2 I'd happily skate that shoe all the time

I like skate classics but alot of them give me blisters
Its always the uppers rubbing a toe or my heels.  the grip is kinda hard to beat tho

Why has this turned into the vans gripe thread

Coming to a Ross near you. Did a bunch of research on this one after seeing the brown colorway pop up on reddit Not sure of the name. Maybe a a court skate or rebook court bulc. Anyway, from what I've seen these have been popping up at discount stores with no boxes, tags, or labels. A lot in south america, but I found 2 reddit post from the US and one russian depop-esq site which a person said they bought them from the US recently. likely a scraped release that went straight to the ross. found the grey and off white color ways on ebay.

Crazy you were able to notice that. This leads me again to believe they were a canceled release. Putting that felt shit on the bottom magically changes a sneaker into a houseshoe and has a lower import tarif.  I've seen this before. It makes them slippery and suck to skate in until you wear it off.

Anyway, I dugup some more colorways online so I went to a local discount store and they had a pair. Seeing them in person, they closer to the BB4000,  They are more chunk IRL than the pictures show. Overrall its like Club C Bulc, which has been out for like. 2 years, but just the BB4000 version.

also my local Marshalls had Jordan 1 mid's for $60
