This is the second time I’ve heard new gen Lakai referred to as “core”…am I missing something. Lakai is definitely not a “core” shoe brand, at least not anymore.
Maybe I'm wrong about this, but to me the definition of 'core' is whether or not a company only functions in one category - in this case skateboarding. It doesn't matter if the owner is a skater as long as they are investing in skateboarding.
At this point in time, Lakai only offers 'skate' as their sole category. The apparel may signal otherwise (as it seemingly doesn't appeal to the older 'core' demographic), but at the end of the day, all the money that they make selling their product goes back into their skate business.
Tactics is not a small 'core' skate shop, but they still play a big part in selling skate product to kids who will hopefully continue to buy skate product, possibly from somewhere else in the future. Its good for the industry if people are actually buying product, even if it doesn't help to pay the rent of a small skate shop. Its not the consumers responsibility to support an outdated and dying business model if there are better alternatives.
Would I prefer if the skate industry landscape still felt and functioned how it did in the 90s? Of course, but unfortunately that time is gone. The game has changed, enjoy it where you can.
