just turned 30. time to stop skating?
« on: June 25, 2011, 11:18:18 PM »
I'm 30 years old. I spend my days skating and working in a fucking retail store and getting drunk on the weekends. Maybe it's time to grow up.

Try it, see how long you can go..  But you're gonna drive by some good ledge, stairset, rail, bank or whatever and think always think about skating it

If you're asking an internet forum whether to keep skating or not you should probably throw in the towel.

If you're asking if you should quit, then quit.  You asked, so quit. Its either be a lifer, or quit.  Simple as death.

I'll quit skating when I no longer need stress relief, a way to stay healthy, and a creative outlet. I'm 28 and don't see that happening in 2 years. In fact, as I get older, I see more of a reason to work my muscles out and burn fat. You should probably try to find a more serious or fulfilling job if that is bringing you down, but there's nothing that says you can't do both. It should also be pointed out that when I got a job that put some stress in my life and made it so I couldn't skate for a lot of my time, that time I do get to go out skating is just that much more awesome and has made skating cool again. When you put yourself out there and make skating your only thing, skateboarding almost becomes something you have to do, when you have other things that define you, skateboarding becomes an amazing thing you get to do.

Sometimes you'll feel like a loser for still skateboarding, but you'd be an even bigger loser for not skateboarding. And you'll get fat. Might as well skate instead of jogging or some shit.

You can still walk, right? So... the answer is clear. You skate, dipshit. Even if it is a once in a year type thing time on/off the board doesn't negate that you're a skateboarder, etc. Plus age is arbitrary and if others in your age group make you feel like a clown for riding look at most of them... chances are their pant sizes are going up drastically and they're unhappily married. So fuck'em.

Get drinking, get a better job (unless you are happy with your retail job, then keep) and don't quit skating. I am almost 40 and still skate every day, never understood why people think they have to quit, I am a grown up and still can have fun.

why formally quit? just skate less if it's not rewarding, pick it back up when and if you feel like it

except people with glass ankles or issues of the like, I don't understand why anyone ever swears it off so cut & dry

That's always thrown me off too. Yeah, if you have some serious injury and physically can't that's different, but at the same time that's not even quitting, thats being forced not to participate.
I think some of it has to do with the age of the sport too. For a while it was just kids doing it. Some of the forefathers of modern skateboarding aren't even 50 yet, so I think a lot of people start feeling weird skating as an adult when they never saw adults doing it when they were kids, and feel like its weird to be an adult doing something that for a while you just thought kids did.

Also, getting a job is good for skating. You can make sure you always have a crispy board and fresh wheels.

As long as you have fun skating, why quit when you have money and time to do it? Oh yes, the society.

do skateshops even sell hardware to people over 30?

you might have to ask young kids to buy a board for you. like you used to ask older guys for buying you booze cigarettes and porn when you were young.

i think this is a big misconception....like skating some concrete bowl is somehow safer than a game of skate on flat....

It's not an issue of safety. I just have noticed that as I have gotten older, my ability to get onto tall ledges grows weaker, but my ability to do shit on steep and tall tranny hasn't. I could see myself still having the strength to do rock fakies on a quarterpipe into my 70's, but I don't see myself grinding benches at that age. I guess we'll see.

listen to the wisdom of the great skate philosopher: the q-man

"Skateboarding is always there for you. If your girlfriend left you, you feel suicidal, go out and bust a big air man! Make yourself feel good! Do a smith grind where you fucking barely make it and you breath a sigh of relief that you didnt get a bad ass mutha fuckin' hipper."
