I think that spitfire kills it with the swirl colors. Which is the main thing that draws me back in. Others that do (like orbs) have a lockin or square shape. Any brands make swirl colors, in a classic or slim shape?

I think Skate One is milking their premium products... which I guess is fair, because it's "premium" and not a necessity, but damn how long can this last. I feel like all these dudes with $300 setups aren't doing a re-up every 3 months

anyone skate those Nelly 59mm spits? They kinda look like monster truck wheels in the best way.

I usually skate 56-58 conical fulls so I don’t think it’d be too far off but I did see a pair at the shop and they are massive even next to the 58’s.

I have the Kader 59 mm Radial Fulls that came with the square rolling tray on a board right now. Same shape and size. Also, I’m running 56 mm Conical Fulls on another board.

The RFs feel faster and clear cracks smoothly compared to the CFs. I do like the CFs better for ledges, but RFs for everything else. The RFs needed 1/4” risers for the trucks while the CFs needed 1/8” risers for the trucks.

I have v1 bones shape, and wondering if V5 shape will help with locking in to round rail 5050 that are not crosslock?

Or is the answer similar to “just go faster” (I.e “it’s all on you and in your head”)

Thanks for the intel! I’m mostly just mashing around town, bombing hills and hitting curbs at this point so those sound kinda perfect. I really like the CF for slide control and pebble management. So a little extra bulk for crack resistance sounds like a nice bonus.

Good looks on the riser recs too. I used to rock 1/4’s all the time, but even with looser trucks and the 58’s I’ve gotten used to just getting those wheel bite grooves worn in to ride through it.

Radial Full wheels might seem a bit big and crazy, but are a really fun wheel for me on some of the bigger setups I have, which doesn't make them look overly big when in proportion on wider boards with wider trucks.

Re closest to OJs

I think the Radial Full or even Lock In Full are the closest comparisons.  Those OJs are 60 x 40 or close to size with different faces, as well as being offset to one side, or at least were on the ones I had a while back, so maybe Lock In Full would be it, especially in the largest size, but I have machined both the Spitfire wheels to a slightly different shape, to fit various boards too, so at least a big wide wheel can be taken down to a different shape easily enough with a little care and a basic angle grinder.

* Sorry I do tend to go on about reshaping wheels maybe too much, but it is fun and makes things way more interesting too.

Wheel size maybe more than anything, eg a little bigger will help stay there, according to some friends who do skate a lot of rails, as there comes a point where optimum wheel size beats shape, but then technique over everything else too.

For what its worth, they go with 54 mm wheels for all rounders, but I know a lot of the more burly street tech pro guys also go up to 56 easily and they say that works better for them - some who like Conical Full type wheels, which could be compared to the V5 for the edge of wheel (not the overall width) which helps with that more so than a flat edge or rounder wheel.

I actually have a set of the OJ Double Duro's 101/95a Mini Combo, size 58mm that I picked up half price. I like them. I wore them in for a bit before taking them to the park. No flat spots. They're super fast and they really roll. They make crusty transition feel smooth. They are my favourite wheels for my local bowl that really needs surfacing. They are a little gimmicky, sure. They don't feel like a soft wheel, maybe similar to X99 but they have a very unique feel to them!

The V5 is my favorite Bones wheel shape. They lock in really nice in my opinion, crosslock or not.

I know we all tend to be quick with a poke but slow to praise, so I was thinking someone somewhere has to like these wheels, but until your message, I don't think I can recall anyone else with good things to say about them.

When they first came out, the marketing for them was pretty good, so I could see people jumping on them, but when I saw the price, I was amazed and really wondered if anyone would find them worth it, with their RRP being so high, upwards of $120 a set here in AU from some shops, so I am guessing NZ would be similar if not more.

Maybe if I had the option and then had the interest, I would get a set too, just to see how they go, but I think I am good for most things like that now.  Having "shock absorbers" built in definitely sounds good for some places I skate too, especially older concrete parks that have more transition than anything else, which is where they would probably work the best for me too.

Just looking through their catalog and there are way more options in them than I first thought, most shapes and sizes, some interesting coloured core options with regular white / natural outers too.

No interest right now in tricks… just standing up and a little pushing at the skatepark. I saw through prior posts searching that the black x99’s seem to be harder than white, but that it may be placebo. Others said that there def was a difference. (*effing hell, this sentence reads like a ChatGPT answer )

This is EXACTLY how my experience was going back to F4 99's for one session last week, after being on all these awesome softer modern wheels for a long while now. My feet and joints were hurting and skating felt less fun in general. Plus I felt I wasn't gaining anything speed-wise.

We're blessed to have all these options, all of them great wheels: the X97, X99, the new duro Spit 97 (my current favorite), the Soft Sliders, etc. A great time to be a skateboarder, for real.

Might have been my post(s) as I've ridden multiple sets of white and black x99s and the black ones feel 'better' - it's not suprising as I find all colored urethane to feel better than the white/potato 'natural' especially in spits; hell the old way way back old yellow STFs felt amazing and not plasticy.

The newer x97s nano rats feel 'better' than the old ones that's for sure, harder and a bit whiter. Still waiting for another drop of the Spit 97s...taking forever and a day, yet we get Ishod lock-in classics; are they gone for good?

The locals near me only have the green 93a dragons so I'd be forced to buy those when its time to replace my current dragons.

I heard they are reverting to the old 97 formula.

This is speculation, but one possibility is: whatever material that is hard to get for the 93s is probably used in the new 97 formula as well.

Otherwise, riders just liked the old formula better than the new one. However, I don’t think DLX would put in a lot of time and money promoting a formula if that was the case.

We can't pre-book 97's unfortunately. I would say that if that wheel is your jam maybe look at the Bones X99 or 95. I think they're both great alternatives and I've loved mine. The Bones V5 shape is like a nice Conical alternative and mine have performed extremely well over the last year. The Soft Slider 93 are great but I find the x99 faster on smoother parks.

Crazy if they are reverting to the old sluggish formula. The new 97a formula better in every way. They feel like they used whatever magic ingredient is in those 93s. It would be a bummer if the 97s and the 93s are unavailable due to the military commandeering this ingredient! I'm wondering if it is the same ingredient that Bones use for their Dragon/XF? Seems like SkateOne are still pumping them out. Another reason to resist the military industrial complex and to protest forever wars!

Yes mate, it's like the wheels have built in shock absorbers! They don't feel like a hard wheel but it's definitely noticeable. They just roll and roll. People must like them otherwise they wouldn't have released such a wide range of sizes, shapes and colours. They now have a 99a outer/95a inner wheel as well.

Re price I remember seeing them at $180NZ when they were first released. Bonkers price for a set of wheels. F4's are currently around $125 NZ full price for reference. I was curious through all the marketing and I have skated the Elite 101's a fair bit. I saw them for $80 in a flash sale so I grabbed a set. I also remember seeing an NHS rep recommend breaking them in first before skating them hard so maybe they are more liable to flat spot when new?

SkateOne's formula is in-house and proprietary, guessing whoever made the softslider formula isn't and doesn't use a proprietary blend (or if they do, they got forked using a chem that's needed for war?). Shame.

When you say better, to you mean they are closer to normal “hard” urethane (like a good ol’ 99a spit?)
