has anyone skated the spitfire classic shape recently? I can’t imagine having that narrow of riding surface nowadays. I’ve been riding full sized wheels pretty consistently for at least a decade now.
What would the pros even be? Less stability but you’re trading for a greater responsiveness and less resistance?
Maybe the number one thing people like about Classics is the smaller profile and round edge just seems to make a lot of things easier for them, but other have said weight reduction, how quick they do get in and out of a lot of things, or even how accessible they are, which might not seem like much, but that shape and usual sizes means that some people who are a bit more set in their ways can always get their wheel of choice almost anywhere at any time.
I like them when they have worn down a few mm, more often riding the bigger ones, eg 55, 56, 58 in the past down to 53 mm or so as just perfect, although I do have some newish 50, 51, 52, 53 and 54 on boards and they make smaller tech stuff very easy.
That said, I will round off any older and squared off wheels, such as a good number of well used Conical Full wheels so they are wider but still have a rounded edge to get on and off coping more easily.
Some would say that the Radial shape is the best of both worlds, wider riding surface with rounder edge, which I tend to agree with, but for a lot of people, they just know and have always skated on Classics, so that is what they stick to.
