hey guys, have you recently been told that you have an inherent "privilege" and don't really know what it means?  if so, this buzzfeed survey is just the thing you need.  Check your privilege!

http://www.buzzfeed.com/regajha/how-privileged-are-you?utm_term=.yrpnz6Mo#.oxaMv8nYo

(despite being a white cisgender male, i scored a 26 out of 100.  I knew I wasn't privileged!  share your results in the comments!)

"You’re not privileged at all. You grew up with an intersectional, complicated identity, and life never let you forget it. You’ve had your fair share of struggles, and you’ve worked hard to overcome them. We do not live in an ideal world and you had to learn that the hard way. It is not your responsibility to educate those with more advantages than you, but if you decide you want to, go ahead and send them this quiz. Hopefully it will help."

You live with 62 out of 100 points of privilege.

You’re quite privileged. You’ve had a few struggles, but overall your life has been far easier than most. This is not a bad thing, nor is it something to be ashamed of. But you should be aware of your advantages and work to help others who don’t have them. Thank you for checking your privilege.

How Privileged Are You?

You live with 10 out of 100 points of privilege.

What exactly are privilege points? Seems like a circle jerk pity party. I turned out fine despite everything. I think a lot of has to do with forgiving yourself and others instead of blaming society. Blaming large groups of people for all your problems has to be mentally unhealthy, instead of seeing that every person is an individual. I'm really sick and buzzed on Delsym so none of this probably makes sense.

" I have never worked as a waiter, barista, bartender, or salesperson." Big time LOL at this one right here. Not working these jobs doesn't mean you're "privileged", it means you're smart enough to realize you can learn a useful skill that can lead you out of dead end jobs.

Black Lives Matter protesters shut down Bernie Sanders speech

A Seattle speech by Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders was preempted in a chaotic confrontation Saturday afternoon with Black Lives Matter protesters, who took the stage and refused to let him speak.

After speeches by Seattle City Councilmember Kshama Sawant and state Sen. Pramila Jayapal at the Westlake Park rally for Social Security, a handful of protesters walked onto the stage and grabbed the microphone.

If you do not listen to us, your event will be shut down, one of the protesters told organizers, who relented and said they could speak before Sanders.

Some in the mostly white audience booed and hissed as they urged protesters to let the senator talk. A few yelled for police to make arrests. One activist on stage replied the Seattle crowd was proving they were white supremacist liberals.

After denouncing the crowd, the activists demanded 4 minutes of silence in memory of Michael Brown, the black man shot to death by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri a year ago. While rally organizers stood and raised their hands in support, some in the crowd yelled profanities.

After the few minutes of silence, the protesters said they wanted to hold Sanders accountable for failing to address their concerns when he was similarly interrupted at a town hall for liberal activists in Phoenix last month.

The Westlake protesters refused to let Sanders take the microphone, prompting rally organizer Robby Stern to say the event was over, and that the demonstrators were determined to stop it.

As Sanders left the stage and greeted supporters who had been waiting at Westlake for hours, he asked that they attend his 7 p.m. campaign rally at Hec Edmundson Pavilion at the University of Washington.

The Westlake rally ended around 3 p.m. with Sanders departing in a white Jeep. His campaign aides at the scene refused to offer any immediate comment.

The rally had been organized by labor groups and other supporters of Social Security, Medicare and other entitlement programs that Sanders has fought to expand.

An avowed democratic socialist, the independent senator had been expecting a warm welcome in Seattle. A few thousand had gathered at Westlake for the 1 p.m. event.

Sanders faces steep obstacles to winning the Democratic nomination compared to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who has led in polls and fundraising. But Sanders fiery, anti-corporate rhetoric, has attracted progressive Democrats dissatisfied with Clinton.

Actually Sanders hasn't said much of anything outside of "getting money out of politics" which is cool but short sighted.  Overall he's been pretty silent on issues that typically concern African American voters (biased justice system, disproportionate poverty rates, bullshit prison conditions, the Kardashians, etc.). Sanders thinks he's going to get a pass because he was a civil rights activist, but so was Jesse Jackson and that nigga sucks. At best he is going to be another "talk the talk but can't walk the walk" Democrat that takes advantage of women and minority voters because the Republicans fucking suck so bad that they have no other options.

So these Black Lives Matter protesters aren't as furiously ignorant as Sanders supporters want to believe (although I do think BLM is a waste of time, we should probably take a que from LGBT community and focus on group economics).

Bernie has a NAACP rating of 97 percent. He was also arrested for protesting segregation and protesting police brutality against blacks. I didn't notice any avoidance of race issues? Could you site some credited sources? I'm interested on your angle.  :)

My angle is that he is using his role in the civil rights movement as a way to say he understands african american issues without (up until a day ago) saying what should be done about it. Overall I think he is a decent candidate but dont let the Young Turks keep you guys from critiquing him.

Google search bernie sanders race issues and you will see articles about what im trying to explain (I am on my phone so ill add links to this post later.)

Sanders correctly identifies many issues as primarily class-related, rather than completely race-related. Who's worse off, Michael Jordan's black kids or some white kids born in a trailer park in West Virginia? African Americans are disproportionally affected by poverty, without question, but that means if you address poverty you will be helping them the most along with helping other minority groups and whites who suffer from it. But he's also been walking the walk on race issues since the 60s. Sorry Bernie's platform can't be 100% BLACK LIVES MATTER issues.Bernie's current platform on race related issues:

https://berniesanders.com/issues/racial-justice/

Bernie's history of race related work:

Quote
While attending the University of Chicago, he was active in the Civil Rights Movement, and a student organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.[22][27] One of the actions he took was the coordination of sit-in protests against segregated campus housing, for which he was arrested.[28] Sanders also participated in the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom with MLK Jr.

Plenty of other examples from throughout his life here:

http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/20-examples-bernie-sanders-powerful-record-civil-and-human-rights-1950s

Sorry that you let these former tea-partiers/jesus freaks make you think he's soft on race issues. I think they were probably paid by someone supporting Hillary to do this. Either way, do you really think someone that Marched with Dr. King deserves this?

Im glad this thread is turning into meaningful discussion instead of making fun of weirdo feminist college students so lets get into it.

I dont support BLM as I said twice, but I do believe that democrats take advantage of black and latino voters because of how limited the two party system is and minority voters (especially black ppl) do a poor job of not holding these candidates responsible for just using buzz words and not going into details about policy.

I agree that class is more important than race, but race plays a huge role in how people view economics. You used poor white ppl in West Virginia as an example, but they would probably vote conservative because they have been manipulated by racial rhetoric to vote outside of their economic interests. Thats how ppl think welfare is used mostly by non whites when the numbers dont even support that. So its important for leftist to address race when running for president.

And I get it, he got busy during the civil rights movement,  but if you are unknown to black then its your duty to make yourself known. And the best way to do that is to address some issues that concern them while you are on your biggest platform, its silly to rely on a speech on youtube from 27 years ago to do the job.

I agree with most of that, until here:

And I get it, he got busy during the civil rights movement,  but if you are unknown to black then its your duty to make yourself known. And the best way to do that is to address some issues that concern them while you are on your biggest platform, its silly to rely on a speech on youtube from 27 years ago to do the job.

Plenty of examples here of Bernie helping multiple minority groups(gays, asians, blacks, etc) throughout his career for anyone that bothers to look:

http://www.alternet.org/election-2016/20-examples-bernie-sanders-powerful-record-civil-and-human-rights-1950s

And that's even more impressive considering his constituency was fucking VERMONT.

Quote
The number of people identifying themselves as black in Vermont is 6,277. Blacks make up 1% of Vermonters.

There are plenty of huge issues going on right now: wars, insane college tuition rates, lack of jobs, education crumbling in many areas, and health care being a joke. If the BLM movement feels so strongly that their issue is more important than all of these, maybe they need to introduce their own candidate. Maybe Bernie should have mentioned BLM more, but he was probably pissed off when ignorant idiots repeatedly yelled in his face about it, and decided to not emphasize it out of spite. I sure as shit would have.

i think his position is that racism is a symptom of the class war, not the cause.   kill the cause, ease the symptom.  the ruling elite have always pitted the lower classes against each other, and racial division is merely one way of doing this.  give one group of people the illusion of a marginal advantage and they will do your dirty work of oppressing the more disadvantaged group.  this is seen often in nature and can be seen in this famous psychological experiment:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_prison_experiment

this video further explains:

now we finally have a viable candidate that wants to institute real, sweeping, revolutionary change.  change that will benefit every disadvantaged person in this country regardless of race or class and will increase equality in ways that have never been attempted.  and you have a small selfish group of people that want to make it about only them.  they want their little gold star.  and they are willing to risk sacrificing everything for this superficial acknowledgement.  they are not changing anything.  nothing will change unless the balance of power in this country is shifted dramatically, and Bernie is trying to do that.

I mean, seriously, the only other option at this point is Donald Trump.  It seems like a bad joke but we may actually be stuck with him as a president.  Do you have any idea what a disaster that would be? You literally have polar opposite idealologies in Trump and Sanders, and right in the middle is Hillary with the same old bullshit and hypocrisy.  This country needs real change, and to achieve that people need to realize who is really oppressing them and who all of this identity politics and division is really serving.

I think people should get behind Hillary if they want a Dem in the oval office.  I know she's fucked up and corrupt, but this dude has no chance in the general election.  He's got Dukakis written all over him.
