Yeah I meant how other pros like Jeff Grosso may not be super stoked on the BB and Stacy....

Right about Cab though....I think most pros of that era looked up to him....

Tommy always seemed like the stepchild......

.....the BB were the best skaters of the era when contests counted....but were culturally bland except for Lance which they don't celebrate enough....is how I think I see it.

Can we maybe throw Cab in there too? His work with and around The Faction is pretty cool.

And what bout TG, was he a BB member?

McGill especially seems dry as mesli, though.

Tommy has actually wanted to come on for a while ... He just so happens to live 8 hours north of the studio. It'll work out one of these days when he's in town I hope.

him and Jim T would be perfect.

In case you haven't...

Very pivotal video for me.

i'm suprised no one didn't mention how far ahead of the trends label was and how they didn't really benifit from that. slappies, no complies, wall rides, clam diggers, etc...

I wanted Lucero to mention Ben Gilley, that era was my favorite for the Label. Good episode, can't wait for part 3.

I don't really enjoy when  guests have comments about Brinks' interview style.  Just answer his semi weird questions and check you huge ego.  no one can do back tails and he's been doing these shows for a while.  If you're going to take advantage of brinks #views on yt then you can act like you respect the guy, (this is not just directed at Grosso)

These are really good, but Grosso is super high if he thinks Rodney is quick to pat himself on the back for the massive impact he had on street skating. The dude is pretty fucking humble all things considered.

I will totally agree that the bones brigade doc was lame...it could have been so rad, but the emotional focus fucked it all up.

..hoping for  a Rick McCrank episode with any guest that will just sit there and be quiet.

I was a huge fan of Black Label  in their earlier days.  I've always considered them sort of an "anti-hero before anti-hero".  they had a sick team and I loved the design of their ads.

Coco Santiago was on the team for awhile, too

Someone might've mentioned this earlier, but from what I can tell Grosso's disdain for the BB documentary seems to be that Lance Mountain was portrayed as this "clown" who wasn't very good, just had a lot of personality and was 'relatable' to the common skate rat.  Clearly that undercuts how good of a skater he was (and obviously still is)... He was always at the top of those contests and was much better than just the guy goofing off.

Antihero has always had a more political/anti establishment feel. Label just didn't/doesn't have the same vibe.
Some of the dirtbag or party guys do share the same vision though.

Skip Pronier and Brian Chung killed it. They made me a fan of Label, later Upson and those cats but that early team was sick.

maybe these were just exceptional guests (older, more comfortable, plenty to say and less to worry about).  maybe no one has just gotten really good at what he does (not talking over people, making the guest comfortablem giving them space to talk, asking good follow up questions).   but not only was this one of the best weekend buzz episodes in recently memory, and not only was this a great skate interview, this is probably one of the better interviews i've seen/read/heard in the past year or two. awesome work.

sidenote: no one i really respect that you don't have to be the star of your own show and that you let the guest shine.  that's a lost art. also good call sticking with  Lee. Now that he has found his flow/role he's an asset to the show.

Am I the only one that still thinks Grosso sounds a bit salty? I love Grosso and all but now that hes mentioned that hes been on narcotics it makes sense why he went on the Mullen rant because i was still clueless at wtf he was getting at. Either way this is hands down the best episode yet, up there with the Wray brothers episode.

no one, I like that you are always prepared with every episode where as lee seems to always wing it. I get Lee has knowledge but for some reason he seemed clueless in a couple of things in the 2 episodes when Grosso and Lucero were talking about the 80's. Yet you did your research and kept the interview going instead of just sitting there dumbfounded. Keep it up no one!

I love Grosso with all my heart too, but part one felt like he was a little bit of a negative Nancy. I could watch these episodes forever though. Watching episode 2 today felt like the 15 minutes went by in a minute and a half. Lucero seems like the coolest dude ever.

Label Kills dropped when I was in 7th grade and dammit, by far my favorite video at the time, and possibly to this day.  Later on, I even mailed them a written letter asking if they had the video on a hard drive, and if they could release Label Kills on DVD (or send me an MP4/MOV copy) because my VHS was getting worn out.  I drew classic Label flames all over the envelope and everything, like pre-teen girl would write to her dreamy crush.

I didn't expect a reply but surprisingly I came home from school one day to find an envelope addressed to me from Black Label.  The envelope had my name written in some cool sloppy looking hand writing and they spelled my last name wrong, but that didn't matter to me.  I opened it up and there was a note saying Label Kills would be on DVD soon! (lol) and to keep on rocking or shredding in the free world, something like that, along with some Label stickers.  I was a juvenile skate nerd who got a letter written to me from the raddest company out there - just imagine how stoked I was!  I actually framed the envelope, note, and stickers, and hung it on my wall in my bedroom.  I still have this in a box at my parents' house and will probably dig it out next time I'm home to put on display at my own place, for adult me to enjoy.

Black Label always just felt 'right' and hearing the way Lucero talks, it makes sense.  He seems like the type of dude I can associate with and be friends with, albeit from an entirely different generation.

On a side note, it's far from his 'prime' and kind of a dick-around part but I loved his Label Kills after credits bonus part.  Can't say how many times I tried to copy stuff from this, like throwing my board at bushes to be like 1:13 haha:

Another side note:  no one, thanks for being a driving force in some of these conversations.  When you get certain people together there is a potential for magic but a catalyst is still necessary and I think you do a great job.  Thumbs up, man.

I love Grosso with all my heart too, but part one felt like he was a little bit of a negative Nancy.
He did say he had back surgery, had a child, got divorced and was told he may never skate again.
I'd say he was well within his right to be a negative nancy.

I think Grosso in the case of the Bone Brigade documentary was pretty salty at how they depicted Lance Mountain, and knowing that Lance would never say anything, felt he had to speak up. He may be an asshole, but he made some good points and was right. I saw that doc a couple years ago so I don't remember it in detail, but it did come across as basically Mullen invented street skating and then TG took it further by actually skating the streets, overlooking guys like Gonz and Natas, or even the younger Powell guys who took it to the next level like Guy, Rudy, Paulo and Gabriel.

As for Lucero, how he treats riders and goes about stuff is sick, and goes a step further than companies that are or were fairly respected for how they treated guys (Crailtap/Soverign Sect), compared to the likes of Jamie Thomas (Colden, Trainwreck, etc) and Deluxe (The Mickey factor). This is up there in my favorite weekend buzz's so far, along with the Carroll one (Probably my favorite skater of all time) and the Jerry and Louie one.

It all comes down to the unwritten rule in skateboarding that you're not supposed to celebrate your own accomplishments (case in point, "The House that Rodney Built" ad). Most will probably just see it as Mullen being a weirdo. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

The Bones Brigade beef goes back years. Grosso rode for Powell Peralta in the mid-80s, but Stacy wanted to keep him am and properly groom him to be pro. Grosso left for Schmitt Stix (which was popular and one of the most innovative companies of the '80s). Powell, in turn, created the Won Ton "Animal" Chin campaign to suggest that some unknown farmer halfway around the world may as well get a pro model if Grosso can get one.

I love Grosso and all but now that hes mentioned that hes been on narcotics it makes sense why he went on the Mullen rant

He was pointing out the difference between the inventor(Mullen) and the , for want of a better word, practitioner (Gonz, Natas)
From what I gathered, Mullen never had the forethought to expose these tricks to 'street style' Gonz and Natas copied what they saw Mullen doing and incorporated into 'street skating' something that you know, probably the inventor and practitioners should both get credit for but only the inventor does, that's how Grosso came off IMHO
