the lens unit is linked to some other cards in the camera so changing it needs some software adjusting afterwards. i've tried it anyway and the focus point would move when i zoom.
You can swap the sensor only too. but usually a bad vx1k sensor has some RVB lines on the left of the image. not your problem.

I've had the same problem as you on multiple vxs. even if it's not often present, it becomes worse and worse with time and ends up most of the time glitchy.
I'm still pretty sure your problem is the connection between the cable and the video card. If you wanna make sure, you can reassemble enough to turn it on while still having access to the cable. put it in camera mode and touch the cable. the video should come back when you hold it in a specific position.

you could try swapping only the sensor, not the whole vap unit. but you might have focus problem.
you could solder jumper wires to bypass the plug if you're good at it.
that's the only options i can see.

Because the issue originated after the camera had just been sitting in storage (and it was previously working perfect), I did originally suspect it might be a bad connection or cable. Camera has never had a lens hit or hard impact in it's life with me (over 10 years now). Or maybe even dust got into it somehow.

I will take it apart again, add a battery and see if I can replicate the issue (or get clear video) by playing with that cable. It's the same cable you circled in that image for the other guy, right?

Is it possible to replace just the cable? If so, do you know if this can be ordered on eBay, or does it need to be salvaged off another camera?

When I had it apart previously, it looked like I'd need to take apart a lot of the camera's circuit boards etc. to get access to the other end of the cable (couldn't see where it went).

Thanks for your help  :) 8)

yes same cable

i don't remember exactly how the cable is attached on the other hand, but i would say no i think its soldered on multiple points to the censor. the issue could also come from the connector it plugs into.

yes you need to dismantle both side of the camera to access the VAP unit

Has anyone ever had a vx1000 where the manual white balance always results in a blue/purple color? The indoor/outdoor presets look fine, but trying to manually white balance off any color results in blue/purple picture

Any tips on capturing glitchy footage ? Was cutting out when I was trying to capture. But I desperately need those tricks even if they are a bit glitchy but it would just stop capturing at the first sign of a glitch. Have run a cleaning tape but I think the damage is on the tape not the camera?

What program are you using? If I remember correctly premier has an option to make it capture still even with a glitch.

WinDV works but in my experience doesn't handle glitches much better than Premiere.

Hardware affects the outcome a lot. Sony tape decks seem to work the best but are obviously harder to acquire.

Old versions of iMovie used to capture with glitches. I think iMovie 9. But it may be tough to get that working on a newer OSX

never had an issue using WinDV and I capture a LOT of glitched/circuit bent footage. try setting your discontinuity threshold to 0? that's the function that guesses when the end of a clip is.

tape deck is definitely going to treat you better tho, glitchy footage or not. in theory you could run footage through a timebase corrector but for the price of one with dv I/O you're far better off getting a tape deck

VX1000 auto focus is abysmal especially in low light settings, resulting in clips like this:

Starting at 5:19

Zoom into the tightest composition you're gonna use, let the image focus and turn on manual. It should yield an in focus image when zoomed all the way back to the widest composition. If not, there's something wrong with the focus. Mine stopped working properly after a refurbishing so there's some phase/reset that needs to be done during more comprehensive camera repairs.

Check this one out: “Sony MRC-1 is inside Sony VX100 now. All the footage can be be checked through the viewfinder (NTSC format only (pal format is available only in the record mode)). The add on is powered by the main battery. I did my best to preserve the original VX1000 look. It's been tested for one month and so far it's been all good.”

VX2000 seems to have a different preamp than the VX1000, so probably not.

Anyone able to tell me whats wrong with my VX? It is constantly turning itself off and back on. I have tested with 3 diff batteries and it still happens, which makes me think its unrelated to the batteries. I have also tried pressing in on the battery when its on, and it doesnt seem to trigger the restart. When I lightly move or press in on with the power switch though - the one that toggels between Camera / Off / VTR - it does seem to trigger the camera to restart.

Why would you want that? The vx1000 audio is way better.

Sounds like something is loose in the main board. I had this issue with several batteries back in the day. And actually most recently a few weekends ago. My battery was loose and not making contact against the back door.3 But it sounds like you already ruled the battery situation out, if you pressed on the back of it with the door open... I would assume something with the main board.

Hey folks, I'm looking for a new FireWire to thunderbolt adapter for capturing my tapes and it's looking pretty scarce out there to find an oem one. Does anyone have any experience with the knockoffs sold on AliExpress and similar sites? They're not super cheapt either so I'm hesitating before buying one...

Have you considered other options?
-Getting an older used Thunderbolt dock such: OWC Thunderbolt 2 Dock (OWCTB2DOCK12T1) / Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock (F4U055) / AKiTiO Thunder Dock (AK-THUNDOCK) / AKiTiO Thunder2 Dock (AK-T2D-THSB3IAS-AKTU) with a FireWire 800 port.
-Getting a mid 2012 (non-retina)(or earlier) MacBook Pro or 2012 (or earlier) Mac Mini with a dedicated FireWire port as a dedicated ingest machine.
-Apple Thunderbolt Display (27") connected to a compatible TB2/TB3 Mac will give you a FireWire 800 port.
-Mac with Thunderbolt 3 > eGPU enclosure > FireWire PCIe card
-If you have access to a PC, add-in FireWire PCIe cards are affordable.

Thanks I'll look into all this! Super helpful. I've been on the lookout for an old Mac w FireWire but i havent found one that looks good yet. I did just find a sony handycam for very cheap that uses dv and also has USB out so maybe will try using that as a capture cam? Let's see :)

Quick update -- the capture cam i bought (Sony dcr hc19e) with USB out turns out not to work :(. The usb can apparently only output a low quality file readable only through a proprietary sony program that is way out dated anyway...
